The heartbroken wife of a Long Island man who was tragically killed after being pulled into an MRI machine is blaming the imaging technician for his death. Keith McAllister, 61, was critically injured Wednesday afternoon at Nassau Open MRI in Westbury after being violently drawn into the machine by the metal necklace he was wearing. He later died from his injuries, according to Nassau County police. His wife, Adrienne Jones-McAllister, had just completed an MRI on her knee and asked a technician to bring her husband in to help her off the table.

A '"20 lb metal chain" that he wore around his neck? What the heck, this is like a section of logging chain. That's nuts.

What on earth was he doing wearing a 20lb chain to a MAGNETIC resonance imaging appointment, even if he wasn't the one getting the test??? Every time I've had an MRI, they have made me use one of the available lockers, remove EVERY piece of metal jewelry, keys or any metal object and lock them up before they allow me ANYWHERE near the exam room. And if my clothing has any metal on it, like a bra clasp, they make me remove it and wear a hospital gown.
Mr. Weight Lifter should have had better sense and I strongly suspect that there is more to this story.

You're supposed to remove ALL metal objects before those scans, even little pins and rings. Tragic stupidity.

Socialized medicine: You just can't get good help these days.
In a good hospital, you can't get within 100 feet of a magnetic resonance imaging machine without first removing all metal. They show training videos of what happens if a housekeeper mistakenly brings a floor buffer into the room with an MRI machine. The thing gets stuck on the side of the machine like a kitchen magnet.

Not shocking at all. Just another opportunistic family of the Golden Child persuasion attempting to turn stupidity into mucho dinero. The first word in the evil machine's name is "Magnetic."

I think there’s more to this story than we’re being told. A good investigation is needed here.

This stinks. I've had my share of MRIs, the techs help you off the table, and they do not allow anyone else in the room.

How many people wear a 20 LB chain necklace around their neck? Just one. The husband, whose wife called her husband into the room, instead of asking the technician to help her up. The husband and the wife are idiots and should take responsibility for their actions -- but they won't, because they are idiots, and want money.

Grifters gotta grift.
There's no way this clown was admitted into an MRI room to "help." It's a straight out money grab.
The Daily Mail doesn't even know how these machines work. Their previous article described the MRI as a "rapidly spinning machine." MRIs don't spin. They just sit here.

I've had several MRI scans. Every time, the technician or nurse helps with the getting on and off the table. Absolutely no one else comes in the room until the scan is complete. Either there is more to this story, or this is the worst run MRI on God's green earth. Is suspect that state licenses and certifications are going to be revoked very soon.

Agree with all the above posts. There's more here than a 20 lb 'chain'.

This story stinks like a whorehouse at low tide. A twenty-pound chain? Around his neck? That’s akin to slinging two loaded hunting rifles around your neck and walking around. How could it possibly be used for “weight training”?
Methinks this was a scam by Shaniqua and DaJuan to sue the hospital. Since the stunt got him killed, she can now pick up some quick cash via a GoFundMe account, with contributions from those on the left side of the bell curve.
Whoever believes this story is going to look pretty silly in a few months.

I recall an MRI machine being the mechanism of death in one of the Final Destination movies. This is nuts.
I believe an MRI machine has a powerful magnet in it that is enhanced when the machine is active. Is the magnet enhanced when the machine is powered on as well? The test was over. Did the machine malfunction? Final Destination indeed.

I too believe this is a hokey story. The guy was stuck to the side of the machine and had several heart attacks that jkilled him. The whole story comes from the wife. Nothing from the facility. There has to be much more to this.

From an ER doctor:
"If this was a chain that was wrapped around the neck, I could imagine any kind of strangulation injuries that could happen, asphyxiation, cervical spine injuries if the patient was slams against the MRI, you know, any kind of blunt force trauma that we can think about could happen," said emergency medicine Dr. Payal Sud.

The magnet would have pulled the chain into the MRI machine and his body with it.

When I had an MRI the technician also asked me if I had any hair clasp or bobby pins and I was told no pierced earrings or jewelry of any kind. No one came into the room other that the technician as it was not open to family, friends or anyone else.

#5,
I have photographed dozens of MRI rooms and while I do empty my pockets of keys and other metal objects, my camera and tripod frequently get to within about 20 feet of the business end of the machine. Usually there are clear markings on the floor that represent the point at which a ferrous object starts to be an issue. Shoot, the control rooms are full of computers and magnetic media and only about 15-18 feet away.
