Hundreds of peonies were vandalized at a University of Michigan garden at the peak of the flowers' bloom time. The vandalism happened late Saturday and was discovered Wednesday at the WE Upjohn Peony Garden in the Matthaei Botanical Gardens and Nichols Arboretum. The University of Michigan Division of Public Safety and Security said officers found that about 250 peony plants of the garden's roughly 800 peony plants had most of their flowers appear to have been intentionally cut and left behind on the ground, with the scene surprising both garden staff and visitors. University police say no group has been identified or taken credit for the vandalism, but

So, lunatic haters decide that destroying flowers will get people to support them. They deserve getting the same treatment as they did to the flowers......cut off the top part and let it drop.

Does cutting off the flower Destroy the plant? Like what florists do? I have had a volunteer in our backyard for over 20 years, and occaisionally I'll cut a flower off and put it in a vase in our kitchen, but the peony has never died, just the flower.... Even then it is a perennial, and even with gentle Texas freezes, it comes back every spring, looks t/b a tuberous plant, and so far mine has survived a transplant to our new house. Just takes planning. I was also surprised a few years ago when visiting Malmaison outside of Paris they had a large garden with ancient peonies and roses. Not sure if they pass the word and attack those while studying summer abroad....

God made flowers. And when He was finished, He made peonies. The. Most. Perfect. Flower. #2, cutting the flowers just lets you enjoy them inside for 1-2 days. I cut my yellow ones every spring. My deep pink flowers are now so plentiful, I can cut some and leave some. Peonies and Japanese Maples. Thank you, Lord.

Peonys are very resilient plants and will live for many, many years. My grandmother had some that were 50+ years old. These will come back next year. As for the vandals, I have no sympathy for Palestine especially since they have Hamas as their leaders. I do believe that even if there was just one Jew alive no matter where Hamas would hunt him down and kill him. They can't live in a world where Jews exist. And then they will turn their hate on Christians.

Yes, they will come back, but much like daffodils, peony bushes, once the blooms are spent, continue to take up and store nutrients in their stems until their dormancy. Here in Nashville, we used to have large planters down by the riverfront that were filled with tulip bulbs. They were a beautiful sight when they'd bloom in the spring. One night several years back, a vagrant went on a rampage and pulled most of them out by their roots. Some people's souls are so empty -- I think they're only satisfied when their outside mirrors their inside.

I have been to this garden many times, first on a garden trip with the MI Master Gardener program and then on my own. My son was treated for Hodgkin's Lymphoma at Mott Children's Hospital which is across the street. I would go daily to decompress while he was stuck in isolation. The peonies are spectacular and the garden is surrounded by woods along the Huron River. Of course this IS associated with the Univ. of Michigan which has always been evil (go Buckeyes lolz) but seriously, it has always been extremely far left. I'm not surprised it happened. At least they didn't damage the roots and they will bloom again next year.

World leaders and organizations are learning quickly in the second Trump administration that things aren't business as usual when it comes to how they treat the U.S. and its allies. Sure, when President Joe Biden was behind the Resolute Desk, they could say and do what they wanted willy-nilly. It's been a mixed year for Second Amendment advocates, but on Thursday, came a significant win from the Supreme Court on that front. The Court announced a decision in "Smith & Wesson Brands, Inc., Et Al. Petitioners v. Estados Unidos Mexicanos." In this case, Mexico in effect sued American gun manufacturers for the plague of violence that is sweeping Mexico. The Supreme Court, in its decision, noted that Mexico's case runs afoul of the Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act, or PLCA. Best of all, the decision was unanimous. Here's the main point of the decision: Because Mexico’s complaint does not plausibly allege that the defendant gun manufacturers aided and abetted

In the debate about which U.S. President has the record for deporting the most illegal aliens, it looks like former Pres. Obama still holds the title. The UK Independent did an in-depth look into the question in late 2024, just after Trump was elected to a second term. The outlet produced this confusing graph. For our purposes, the red bars at the bottom are what we would consider to be deportations: involuntary departures facilitated by a formal order. “Returns” come in a variety of flavors and include people leaving voluntarily (a good thing). The rest of the figures in the blue, light blue, and pink bars represent

Military families homeschool their children at about twice the rate of the general population. About 12% of military kids are homeschooled, pointing to the many advantages of giving children continuity in a job given to frequent relocation. Otherwise, the same issues that drive non-military parents to homeschool their kids apply, including academic quality, ideology, flexibility, and safety concerns. Realizing this, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth issued a memorandum in May directing subordinates to conduct a review of what their departments are doing to support homeschooling in the military. "Homeschooling offers an individualized approach for students and highlights the significant role parents play in the educational process. I hereby direct

Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk on Thursday ordered his aerospace company to immediately decommission its Dragon capsule, which NASA uses to service the International Space Station, amid a public feud with President Donald Trump. The feud between the former allies escalated in the past 48 hours after Musk publicly slammed the president's "big, beautiful bill" as a "disgusting abomination" for its failure to address deficit spending.
