Hundreds of peonies were vandalized at a University of Michigan garden at the peak of the flowers' bloom time.
The vandalism happened late Saturday and was discovered Wednesday at the WE Upjohn Peony Garden in the Matthaei Botanical Gardens and Nichols Arboretum. The University of Michigan Division of Public Safety and Security said officers found that about 250 peony plants of the garden's roughly 800 peony plants had most of their flowers appear to have been intentionally cut and left behind on the ground, with the scene surprising both garden staff and visitors.
University police say no group has been identified or taken credit for the vandalism, but

So, lunatic haters decide that destroying flowers will get people to support them. They deserve getting the same treatment as they did to the flowers......cut off the top part and let it drop.

Does cutting off the flower Destroy the plant? Like what florists do? I have had a volunteer in our backyard for over 20 years, and occaisionally I'll cut a flower off and put it in a vase in our kitchen, but the peony has never died, just the flower....
Even then it is a perennial, and even with gentle Texas freezes, it comes back every spring, looks t/b a tuberous plant, and so far mine has survived a transplant to our new house. Just takes planning.
I was also surprised a few years ago when visiting Malmaison outside of Paris they had a large garden with ancient peonies and roses.
Not sure if they pass the word and attack those while studying summer abroad....

There are some liberals who will be more outraged at the destruction of flowers than the October 7 massacre.

Heard a priest - who I have a lot of respect for - say that our world is truly evil. I am afraid that every day we see more examples of Father's words. Who would deliberately kill flowers in a garden?
Someone who hates life.

God made flowers.
And when He was finished, He made peonies. The. Most. Perfect. Flower.
#2, cutting the flowers just lets you enjoy them inside for 1-2 days. I cut my yellow ones every spring. My deep pink flowers are now so plentiful, I can cut some and leave some.
Peonies and Japanese Maples. Thank you, Lord.

Note the wording:
"University police say no group has been identified or taken credit for the vandalism,"
Taken credit for.
Taken CREDIT for?
Is the writer SUPPORTING the vandals?

Peonys are very resilient plants and will live for many, many years. My grandmother had some that were 50+ years old. These will come back next year. As for the vandals, I have no sympathy for Palestine especially since they have Hamas as their leaders. I do believe that even if there was just one Jew alive no matter where Hamas would hunt him down and kill him. They can't live in a world where Jews exist. And then they will turn their hate on Christians.

I live less than a half hour from U of M, grow my own peonies and have visited that garden many times. As long as the root balls were not damaged, the plants will be fine. U of M is full of liberals who have no clue about plants!

Yes, they will come back, but much like daffodils, peony bushes, once the blooms are spent, continue to take up and store nutrients in their stems until their dormancy. Here in Nashville, we used to have large planters down by the riverfront that were filled with tulip bulbs. They were a beautiful sight when they'd bloom in the spring. One night several years back, a vagrant went on a rampage and pulled most of them out by their roots. Some people's souls are so empty -- I think they're only satisfied when their outside mirrors their inside.

Ok, looks like I have to take the low road here. It was a campus lesbian group who got mixed up and went out to cut off a bunch of peonies.

This is pure, unadulterated hatred of anything and everything beautiful. There are sick people in our country who derive some kind of thrill from destruction. They build nothing, contribute nothing. I think their ideal world would be utter chaos and destruction. Where does such sickness come from?

The penalties for attacking Teslas are now too risky for them so they have moved on to flowers. I would guess it's pure jealousy because the flowers are prettier than their rainbow flags.

I have been to this garden many times, first on a garden trip with the MI Master Gardener program and then on my own. My son was treated for Hodgkin's Lymphoma at Mott Children's Hospital which is across the street. I would go daily to decompress while he was stuck in isolation. The peonies are spectacular and the garden is surrounded by woods along the Huron River. Of course this IS associated with the Univ. of Michigan which has always been evil (go Buckeyes lolz) but seriously, it has always been extremely far left. I'm not surprised it happened. At least they didn't damage the roots and they will bloom again next year.

“University police say no group has been identified or taken credit for the vandalism, but some papers were left behind, including one that referenced the war in Gaza, saying: "Palestinian lives deserve to be cared for. More than these flowers."
How are the flowers connected to the so-called oppression of the “Palestinian” people? How does going jihadi on these blooms serve any purpose towards benefitting the Gazans? Esto es muy estupido!
Whoever did this is a mental case.

This will be a disappointment to horse-lovers everywhere. So many ponies. Where is PETA on the matter? Where is Greta Thumbburn? Does this mean the horse races will be cancelled? This has to be fake news, right?
