Not funny, John Oliver: Standing for religious

I realize we increasingly have become a society that embraces a “my way or the highway” attitude. Both sides are guilty of that way of thinking. Yet, it seems especially egregious from those on the left. Progressives’ lack of tolerance for other views has presented itself in different iterations, from the cancel culture phenomenon to angry demonstrations on college campuses when a conservative dares to speak. So perhaps it's not surprising that liberals love slapping labels on those who have the audacity to believe something different from progressive dogma. Nazi. Hitler. Bigot. Hater. To name a few.

The Media ‘Jumps the Shark’ 3 replies

Hello, this is Victor Davis Hanson for The Daily Signal. I’ve been critical of the media, as many of you are. But recently it’s jumped the proverbial shark. In other words, it’s gotten so outrageous, it’s almost incomprehensible, unfathomable. Elon Musk, according to the Media Research Center, has had 96% unfavorable coverage in our American media. What did he do that was so wrong? He rescued astronauts who were stranded in space. Tesla has revolutionized the electric vehicle industry. Social media is open and free, due to his acquisition of X. Starlink has more satellites—that private entity that he created—it has more satellites than the

Oh, my GAWD -this is getting so good. I mean, to the point where there's no 'Republic of Alberta...YET,' good. The morning after the country went to the polls, Alberta Premier Danielle Smith laid down the law to newly elected Canadian Prime Minister and WEF/Davos climate cult toadie Mark Carney that she - meaning Alberta - wasn't going to stand for any NetZero nonsense out of Ottawa. They'd quite had their fill, thank you.
Trump's China trade deal is better than

Stock markets soared May 12 after President Donald Trump announced a temporary trade deal with China. The move eases concerns at least for now about the softening economy and fears of a fresh round of inflation. It also raises important questions: Will Trump seal a permanent deal? If he does, will his critics recognize that his gamble on tariffs paid off? News of the trade agreement sent stock markets soaring. The S&P 500 climbed more than 3%, the Dow Jones Industrial Average surged more than 1,100 points and the Nasdaq Composite rose more than 4.3%. Stock analysts told USA TODAY that the trade deal means record highs

If the 2024 election told us nothing else, it confirmed that the voters aren’t nearly as credulous as the Democrats and the corporate media believe them to be. Indeed, according to a survey conducted by the Pew Research Center six weeks prior to the election, only 22 percent of American adults believed news organizations deal fairly with all sides. Ironically, considering that the news coverage of the Trump administration has been overwhelmingly negative, the primary beneficiaries of this brazenly biased reporting appear to have been President Donald Trump and the Republican Party.
Catholic Church To Excommunicate Priests

The Catholic Church has issued a warning to its clergy in Washington state: Any priest who complies with a new law requiring the reporting of child abuse confessions to authorities will be excommunicated. The new law, which will take effect on July 27, eliminates the long-standing confidentiality of the confessional, forcing Catholic leaders and lawmakers into a highly charged standoff over religious liberty and child protection. However, the Archdiocese of Seattle and several bishops argue that the law not only contravenes church doctrine but crosses constitutional lines, while supporters maintain it is a crucial step to protect minors from abuse.
Pritzker’s Progressive Trap 1 reply

Illinois governor J. B. Pritzker’s 2025 budget reveals a notable retreat from progressive ambitions. Despite his past advocacy for expansive government programs and robust social spending, Pritzker proposes neither substantial tax increases nor significant new initiatives. Most conspicuously absent from his accompanying budget speech was any mention that the state would no longer fund free health care for illegal aliens aged 42 to 64. Extending coverage to that age cohort had been one of his recent progressive efforts, introduced with fanfare. The governor had to abandon it after costs surged 286 percent beyond original projections, producing budgetary shortfalls of hundreds of millions of dollars.

Billionaire Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker is enjoying a moment in the soft-focus sunlight of rising national polls and fawning press. He’s the antidote to Donald Trump for Democrats. That’s a mirage. Pritzker, the prep school scion of the family that founded Hyatt Hotels, would be a disastrous choice for a party trying to turn the page on Trump’s populism. Like Trump himself, the prairie liberal did little to earn his wealth, inheriting his name and billions from a family that has been among America’s wealthiest since Forbes began keeping track. In suspiciously familiar territory, The Chicago Tribune caught him in lies about overseas accounts and businesses

After the Biden-Harris administration left Americans drowning in inflation, insecurity and incompetence, President Trump is rebuilding the country with the bold, pro-American leadership we were missing for four long years. In just a few short months, Mr. Trump has done what President Biden never could: restore economic confidence, reignite job growth and reassert control over a nation that had slipped into crisis. The April jobs report, which blew past Wall Street expectations, was good news for the stock market and a clear signal that the era of “Bidenomics” is finally ending. Wages are rising, and 177,000 new jobs have been created.

President Trump announced his first judicial nominee of his second term, kicking off what will be a historic next four years as he continues to build on the most consequential accomplishment of his first term by appointing even more bold and fearless judges. The stakes could not be higher as Democrat activist judges are actively sabotaging American voters, the presidency, our Constitution, and our country. Trump nominated Whitney Hermandorfer to a Tennessee-based seat on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit. She is a brilliant legal mind and committed constitutionalist who has litigated critical First Amendment issues. Trump's first nomination stands in stark

Among the most fatuous exercises engaged in by the Fourth Estate after the voters elect a chief executive is the publication of the dreaded “first 100 days” editorial. Having endured a protracted and usually acrimonious political campaign, the long-suffering public is subjected to utterly predictable screeds penned by the new president’s enemies and equally inevitable encomia written by his supporters. All of this blather is predicated on the preposterous notion that it is possible to divine the ultimate success or failure of a presidency a little more than three months after inauguration day.

In a new executive order published yesterday, President Donald Trump placed a target on sanctuary cities and created yet another trap for his political foes. This new proposal requires the federal government to create a list of “sanctuary” jurisdictions which refuse to cooperate with federal authorities on immigration law. It instructs various federal departments to defund sanctuary jurisdictions as much as they can under current law, and also to establish policies which verify the legal status of those who receive federal benefits in sanctuary jurisdictions. What’s more, this executive order telegraphs that the Trump administration may escalate its legal battles.

The Episcopal Church’s migration service said it will refuse the Trump administration's request to help resettle dozens of White South Africans granted refugee status by the federal government. In a statement, Presiding Bishop Sean Rowe said the Episcopal Migration Ministries will instead terminate its partnership with the government. The announcement came shortly before 59 South Africans arrived in the United States. "In light of our church’s steadfast commitment to racial justice and reconciliation and our historic ties with the Anglican Church of Southern Africa, we are not able to take this step," Rowe said of the government's request that the church help resettle the South African citizens.

Democrat Rep. Summer Lee (D-PA) is slated to introduce a reparations resolution this week, as she believes it is a “moral and legal obligation” for Americans. The resolution itself involves the U.S. spending “trillions” on reparations for black Americans. The resolution points to Jim Crow laws as part of the justification for the use of U.S. tax dollars going toward this effort. “This is a moment in time where societies are shaped [and] new societies are built. We should be the ones who are shaping it,” Lee said, enraged that President Donald Trump ended many diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) measures with the “stroke of a pen.”

Over the years, numerous studies, speeches and books have focused on a phenomenon known as self-sabotage. The subjects are highly successful people who throw it all away by behaving recklessly when they get to the top of the heap. Think Bill Clinton with Monica Lewinsky. Overconfidence, boredom and a notorious quest for power are among the reasons commonly identified as explanations for the destructive cycle.

Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Lee Zeldin hinted Monday that he’s preparing to roll back one car feature that every driver “hates.” “Start/stop technology: where your car dies at every red light so companies get a climate participation trophy,” Zeldin tweeted Monday in a post that has since racked up more than 8 million views. “EPA approved it, and everyone hates it, so we’re fixing it.” The feature kills internal combustion engines at red lights and has been touted by proponents for being able to conserve fuel and cut down on pollution. Critics have questioned whether the feature can wear down the car’s battery or engine more quickly.

Nearly two dozen Tren de Aragua gangbangers in an ICE detention center in Texas have barricaded themselves and threatened to take hostages in a major uprising — days after migrants spelled out “SOS” in the prison yard. Members of the Venezuelan gang threatened to hold ICE officers captive and injure them on April 26 as they barricaded the doors of their unit with their cots, covered surveillance cameras, blocked windows, and flooded the unit by clogging the toilets, according to the Department of Homeland Security. The takeover attempt lasted “several hours,” with the detainees ignoring the orders of ICE agents.

Walmart said Thursday it plans to raise prices on some goods beginning later this month, in response to President Trump’s tariffs. “We will do our best to keep our prices as low as possible but given the magnitude of the tariffs, even at the reduced levels announced this week, we aren’t able to absorb all the pressure given the reality of narrow retail margins,” Walmart CEO Doug McMillon is expected to say during a Thursday earnings call, according to prepared remarks obtained by several media outlets. The U.S. and China agreed earlier this week to lower their respective reciprocal tariffs for 90 days as they look to end a bruising trade war

California Governor Gavin Newsom said Wednesday he wants the state to stop enrolling more low-income illegal immigrants in a state-funded health care program, beginning next year. Under Newsom’s plan, the state would not end coverage for illegal immigrants who are already enrolled in Medi-Cal, the state’s Medicaid program. However, the state would begin charging adults with “unsatisfactory immigrant status” a monthly premium of $100 beginning in 2027. Newsom’s announcement comes after the governor previously said in March he was not considering rolling back health benefits for low-income illegal immigrants, even as the state contended with a $6.2 billion Medicaid shortfall.

The case of around 50 white Afrikaner refugees from South Africa has turned the political discourse upside down. After years of never finding a migrant they didn't approve of, Democrats and their press allies are suddenly greatly offended that President Donald Trump would dare grant asylum to a statistically insignificant number of people. On CNN, former Obama campaign official and current analyst Ashley Allison went on a racist rant, proclaiming they should go back to "Germany" if they don't like the "law of the land" of being persecuted financially and physically. Notably, Afrikaners, who migrated to South Africa some 400 years ago, aren't from Germany,

Elected in a historic second-round vote, he aims for swift action on growth, migration, and defense. He has also described his cabinet's lack of federal experience as a "great opportunity" for real change.
