This is a heckuva way to run a Church,
but on the other hand . . .

Why do Catholics still worship an old king in a palace?
I understand why they did in the old days. Everybody did. (Well, except Christ didn’t.) There was Henry VIII, Louis XIV, Charlemagne and, in folklore, King Arthur. There were also king-like rulers called emperors, such as Julius Caesar, Peter the Great, and Napoleon Bonaparte.
It was way back in the olden days that Catholics set up the papacy, their kingship. Their first Pope was said to be the Apostle named Peter, who used to be called Simon.

Glenn is wise on many things. Ecclesiastical foundations of the Catholic Church isn't one; but it's kind of fun to watch him play armchair theologian, I s'pose.

The Pope is the representative of Christ on Earth, or at least he’s supposed to be. I’m not so sure about the current Pope nor Francis, his successor. As such, he is the leader of the Catholic Church. Not the king, nor do we worship him. We only worship the Holy Trinity. We honor Mary and the Saints, and those who deserve honoring.

I did not read the article out of being stunned. Did he have a different method the successor of Peter,I.e. Christ would guide a world program of 1.4 billion people.

Being Eastern Orthodox, I have no dog in this fight but even I have to say Glenn needs to read up (and be less flippant) on the actual history of the Bishop of Rome prior to writing such a screed. Many popes were good and saintly men, many venerated as such by my own Church. And while we Orthodox know where the fullness of the truth lives, we are not privy to the heart's of men and know not where it dwells in part whether in small measure or great abundance. The Great and Magnificent Physician of our souls and bodies, Christ Jesus, knows all that and we shall rely on His judgement and His alone.
I sincerely pray for my friends, brothers and sisters, under the Bishop of Rome, that this pontiff shall prove a good shepherd to his flock and true protector of Christ's truth.

Libs will ooh and ah over every word that emerges from the Pontiff's mouth. As they wilfully ignore the fact that he is the head of a sovereign state governed as a theocracy, and protected by a 39' wall--two things they claim to despise.

The jury is still out.
Will the Pope be a more famous Chicagoan than PIAPS?

Its not worship, Glenn anymore than the misinformed believe we think the Blessed Mother is a diety. The Pope is a Shepherd. Try and catch up.

No offense to anyone, but as a believer, by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone, I am also a representative of Christ while I'm on the earth.

As the Roman Empire came to an end, the Roman Catholic Church started to rise. The set up between the two is practically identical.

Beaton needs to stay in his lane to avoid sounding ignorant and unserious.

I didn't like the start of this rant so I knew i would like the end so I just passed on it, but most of the comments I agree with.

I usually like what Beaton has to say but he’s wrong right out of the gate on this one. We don’t worship the pope. I admit that I didn’t read any further than that first sentence.

He does have a point if one looks at the big picture. Christ preached poverty, caring for the sick and the poor, being kind to everyone, minimal material goods, peace. A palace in Rome with extremely valuable paintings, gold, jewelry and the wearing of elegant finery just doesn't quite fit the picture.

This article is a mixed bag. Not worth commenting upon and, really, not up to Beaton standards. Move along.

I used to like this guy. Lately, though, most of his columns have been mush. I think he's spent too much time living in Aspen among the liberal mush-heads and it has rubbed off on him. His loss -- and ours, too. Maybe he'll leave the "LA LA land of the Rockies" and move back into real-world America one day...
