Is the American Pope a case of follow-the-money?

To everyone’s surprise, the new Pope is an American. Like almost everyone else in the world, I’d never heard of him before yesterday. But he looks like a straight shooter and a stand-up guy. And, as popes go, he looks pretty healthy. For readers in my tribe who are dismayed that he once expressed some passing criticism of President Trump’s summary deportation of illegal aliens, I ask you: What’s a clergyman supposed to say – kick the SOBs out? I did not expect to see this – an American Pope – now or ever. Reports are that the smoke-watchers crowding the Vatican grounds didn’t either, and were a bit disappointed

Considering the corruption in the College of Cardinals, I don't hold up much hope that this is a man of God.

Peruian-American, from reports I have seen. Dual citizenship seems fairly UN-American to this American, and the fact that he was hand selected by Frances seems to be an indicator that he'll be a far leftist, too.' But....I'll wait and see before going beyond "seems like he will be". We'll get some indicators soon enough. Like, will he tell us how wonderful the Muslims are?

Given that the Catholic Church is losing members and money like a gambling addict at a horserace track, I can believe that the idea of a newer, richer America was possibly a deciding factor. Awarding the position to an American could be a big boost to their influence.

We Catholics believe that the Holy Spirit guides, and indeed, selects the new Pope. We have seen the hand of God at play since Donald J. Trump descended the golden escalator in 2015 although we didn't always understand His chess game. But, the spectacularly unsuccessful lawfare and of course, the two unsuccessful assassination attempts, especially in Butler, PA, showed God's direct and very public involvement in President Trump's life and the continuation of the United States of America. While I may be suspicious of the new Pope and his political leanings, I think it is nearly unbelievable that in this year 2025, with the odds of an American being chosen Pope near zero, American Robert Prevost ascends to the Papacy. That ain't happenstance ladies and gentlemen, that is God once again sending Americans and the world a very visible, public message. I believe the Holy Spirit sometimes uses at 2X4 to announce His presence. And just like the unsuccessful assassination attempts against our beloved Donald Trump I believe, Prevost the American, is another 2X4 example.

Actually, I hope that this pope WAS selected because of money. Americans like truth and admire righteousness. Illegal entry isn't righteous. Global warming/climate scares aren't truth. And we have this slogan "Get woke; go broke." It's a powerful lever. And there's a precedent for more traditional, non-Italian Catholics getting in charge in Rome and correcting.... messy situations. This could work.

If it's not "follow the money", it's follow the leftism. He's not going to be an improvement except maybe in the area of "trans." Maybe.

Technically, He isn't the first American to become Pope. Frances was born in Argentina which is also America. Leo is from the Unites States of America. I know, picky, picky, picky.

it is the second time they have chosen someone with some Italian descent who speaks apparently excellent Italian. Pope Francis too obviously.

#4 and 5. I certainly hope you are right, but I'm not holding my breath. I've been advocating for prayer that Pope Leo XIV will have a conversion as Saul did on the road to Damascus. The black Cardinal from Africa would have been a more apparent divinely inspired choice,

The Democrat who goes by the initials AOC is the hottest Democrat in Congress. I know that’s a low bar, but still. It’s the main reason Democrats like her. Be honest: Who would you like to share a voting booth with – AOC or Nancy Pelosi? And then there’s also the possibility of voting from home . . . . I’ll admit it’s a bit creepy to see Her Hotness and 163-year-old Bernie Sanders together on a stage performing Dem-porn acts such as “the rich don’t pay taxes” and “Republicans are a threat to Democracy” before at least one of them gets driven to one of Bernie’s mansions.

On those rare occasions when I’m in need of an emetic, I’d rather have a finger stuck down my throat than have the image of Joe Biden stuck through my retina. But he’s baaaaaack anyway. Democrats hate that he’s back. What my enemy hates, I should like. And so, I do. Even though it hurts my eyes and turns my stomach. Democrats hate it for the same reasons that I like it. Every Joe sighting reminds people of why they voted against him. He demonstrates that he’s a creaky, corrupt, cardboard cutout that is incapable of thought and practically incapable of reading a teleprompter

Why do Catholics still worship an old king in a palace? I understand why they did in the old days. Everybody did. (Well, except Christ didn’t.) There was Henry VIII, Louis XIV, Charlemagne and, in folklore, King Arthur. There were also king-like rulers called emperors, such as Julius Caesar, Peter the Great, and Napoleon Bonaparte. It was way back in the olden days that Catholics set up the papacy, their kingship. Their first Pope was said to be the Apostle named Peter, who used to be called Simon.

I’ve read the Wall Street Journal for many years. I’ve even had a piece published in the Journal. The opinion page is excellent (even when I disagree with the opinions expressed there) and the news page is reliable (though it has drifted leftward over the years). I was therefore surprised and disappointed to see the Journal’s coverage of a recent interview that President Trump gave to NBC News. Trump was asked about the due process protections he should afford illegal aliens being deported.

Judges lately often exhibit acute cases of TDS. One in Milwaukee was preparing to preside over the trial of an illegal who’d been charged with domestic abuse. In layman’s language, that’s wife beating. Federal agents showed up outside the judge’s courtroom with a warrant to arrest the man, presumably to deport him. The judge stalled the agents for a bit by sending them down the hall, then returned to the courtroom. While the agents were away, she spirited the wife-beating illegal out the side door.

Young people are slaves to fashion. (That’s one vice I’ve never been accused of, even when I was young.) You name it – mustaches, bell-bottom jeans, Barack Obama, hula hoops, big hair, Burt Reynolds, electric cars, transexuals, solar panels, line-dancing to country music, etc., etc., etc. Someday, there may be a fashion convergence on Netflix where we have a mustachioed Barack Obama, sporting big hair and bell-bottomed jeans, line-dancing to country music with a transexual Burt Reynolds playing with a hula hoop as they both get run over by a Tesla fired by a solar panel. Meanwhile, we have antisemitism.

First, there were Marxists. The Marxists got a bad reputation for destroying economies. Seems the approach of taking from people in accordance with their ability to give, and giving to people in accordance with their ability to take, sounded nice but didn’t work well. So, they rebranded to “communists,” as in community-ists. Everyone likes a community, right? Same result, this time at the point of a gun. And murdering 100 million people in the “community” didn’t help their reputation.

Bill of Rights

Back in 1992, the citizens of Colorado passed an amendment to the state constitution to limit tax increases. They called it the Taxpayer Bill of Rights, or TABOR. TABOR did not eliminate taxes, nor did it prohibit tax increases. Instead, it merely limited tax increases to the rate of inflation plus the population growth of the state. Even those limits can be exceeded by a mere majority of the voters of the jurisdiction seeking to exceed it. If the voters of Colorado want to raise the state income tax rate, for example, they can do so with a simple majority vote in the next election.

Democrats think Americans pay too little in taxes. More specifically, they think “rich” Americans fail to pay their “fair share.” They play fast and loose with those terms “rich” and “fair share.” Their unstated definition of “rich” is people who make more than the Democrat hurling the allegation. And they never do define “fair share.” It’s always just more, more, more on the rich, rich, rich. Never mind that the top 1% of earners pay 40% of federal income taxes, the top 5% pay 61%, and the bottom 50% pay only 3%.

The Secret Service is investigating after ex-FBI Director James Comey posted an Instagram photo of seashells arranged to make the numbers "86 47" — a message that White House officials swiftly condemned as an attempt to put out a "hit" against the 47th president. Comey later deleted the post after online backlash from government officials, lawmakers and President Donald Trump’s son. Trump has faced two assassination attempts — one of which resulted in him being shot and a bystander being killed — in the past year. The post including the alleged "hit" showed the numbers in question etched into the sand at a beach using seashells.

In March, the Oversight Project dropped a bombshell memo detailing 32 instances where the Biden White House used an autopen to sign off on clemency warrants —

The proposal, billed by labor leaders as the highest minimum wage in the country, would require hotels with more than 60 rooms, as well as companies doing business at Los Angeles International Airport, to pay their workers $30 per hour by 2028. That translates to a 48% hike in the minimum wage for hotel employees over three years. Airport workers
