The Justice Department on Thursday formally notified the American Bar Association that it will no longer comply with its ratings process for judicial nominees, the result of what it argues is a biased system and one that "invariably and demonstrably" favors nominees put forth by Democratic administrations. The Department of Justice said it will no longer grant the ABA the "special treatment" and first access it has received, revoking decades of precedent where the ABA interviewed and vetted potential members of the incoming DOJ team. "Accordingly, while the ABA is free to comment on judicial nominations, there is no justification for treating the ABA differently from such other activist organizations

Never should have relied upon the American Bar Association. The ABA does not represent citizens, just an organization of lawyers.

I had no idea that the Demoncrat party has been able to get away with this all this time. Yes! Should have been done years ago, but nobody was brave enough. Thank you, President Donald Trump!

The ABA has around 166,000 members. There are about 1.3 million lawyers in the U.S. So only about 12 to 15 percent of all lawyers belong to the ABA, so the organization does not speak for most lawyers. I figured out early on in my career that membership costs way too much - I had no desire to spend $250 a year (at the time - don't know what dues are now) to fund the political shenanigans of an organization whose politics I did not agree with - and all I'd get out of it was a little plaque saying I was a member and a lousy magazine. Kind of like only about 15% of all doctors belong to the AMA, but you'd think that the way the press touts the AMA's pontifications on all things medical, all doctors agree with the AMA's political leanings.

Everyone seems to think that the American Bar Association is an all powerful government agency overseeing lawyers/attorneys. It is not. It is a professional membership organization for law professionals. Only around 28% of the law community belong to the ABA. They do have a lot of influence in the law community.

"Won't comply" infers that the DOJ is subject to the ABA in some fashion. It's not. The ABA is part of the swamp. Good to see the DOJ ignoring them and putting them on par with every other advocacy group.

How about inverting their ratings to get the truth. Like if a just is rated a 1 out of 10 the corrected rating is a 9, ABA is accurate, just that whatever they hate, we should have and whatever they love we should reject.

The renunciation of the ABA is so well deserved, and overdue. 80% of the licensed lawyers should have their licenses revoked for lack of merit, and judges as well, for lack of judicial temperament.

The ABA is heavily dominated by trial lawyers (criminal, ambulance-chasing, and others) who are largely leftist in their political leanings. As noted by other posters, corporate and other transactional lawyers are less likely to be ABA members, though many large law firms automatically enroll all their attorneys in the ABA and pay their annual dues for them as a matter of course. The ABA donates heavily to the dem party.

Comply is the wrong word. Use of it implies that the Justice Department is required to seek input from the ABA. It is not.
