CLEARWATER, Fla. - Dozens of residents were urgently evacuated from a 12-story condominium building on Tuesday after construction workers discovered a growing crack in a support column in the building’s parking garage. What we know: The incident unfolded quickly as Clearwater Fire & Rescue and Clearwater police officers went door to door, evacuating about 60 people from the South Beach III Condos, located at 1460 Gulf Boulevard. No injuries were reported, and the building has not collapsed, but officials say no one will be allowed back inside until engineers deem it safe. "This is a very well-managed building," said resident David Zuzman, who was forced to leave with his two children. "I’m shocked."

My closest friend, after moving back to Florida in 2012, rented in this building on the top floor for two months before buying a better unit a half mile south. So I've been here, many times, and know the residents from 2012 who remain. They're very nice people. Last September 26, the whole west coast of Florida was inundated by a ten foot storm surge. Did the storm cause the crack in the structural beam? Two main questions: Is the building fixable? Or is it a writeoff due for destruction? If the former is true, special assessments are going to be lofty. How much? Who knows? I've heard of $100,000 in bad cases. At any rate, this news has our attention. I hope it doesn't get worse.

Smart move. In coastal areas, the steel reinforcing bars in cast concrete building pillars and beams eventually start to corrode, deep inside the concrete beams. The corrosion products are a greater volume than the uncorroded reinforcing bar....which inexeorably cracks the concrete. This lets in more water, and in coastal areas airborne salt, which accelerates the corrosion. Give it enough time and the beam WILL fail. Not if, WHEN.

I wonder if there were a lot of EVs in the parking garage? Parking lot engineering has had to really beef up new structures to compensate for the increased weight of the EVs. If you have noticed roadways deteriorating faster than they use to you can look at EVs for the increase in potholes and crumbled roads.

On 24 June 2021, at Champlain Towers South in Surfside (north of Miami Beach), a section of a 12-floor beachfront condominium, collapsed at 1:22 AM, killing 98 people. Inspection showed that the building was deteriorating noticeably in 2018, and that that damage had gotten worse two months before the collapse. No one expected this to happen. It seems no one ever does. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Surfside_condominium_collapse

I’m in New York for last night’s Manhattan Institute’s annual Alexander Hamilton Award dinner. Held last night at Cipriani on 42nd Street, this year the award honored long-time Manhattan Institute chairman Paul Singer. As of last night, Mr. Singer has stepped down and been succeeded as MI chairman by Betsy DeVos. Mr. Singer is the founder and president of Elliott Investment Management. He is also the philanthropic supporter of conservative and Jewish causes. Is that the reason that the lunatic left was out in force at the event last night? I don’t know, but they were. In our modern age, the electric grid is the mother of all networks. Without electricity, advanced forms of transportation and communications virtually grind to a halt and nearly all digital and electronic devices are rendered practically useless. When the grid goes down, we lose conveniences like air conditioning, lighting, and other amenities that we often take for granted. Several days ago, Spain, Portugal, and parts of France and Belgium lost power for an extended period of time, demonstrating just how devastating a total grid collapse can be to our modern way of life. During this colossal blackout, the largest that Europe has ever experienced, more than 50 million people

Michelle Obama says she’s back in therapy as she begins her “transition” to the “next phase” of her life. I’m not kidding; that’s exactly what People magazine is reporting. According to the article, during a recent appearance on Jay Shetty’s "On Purpose" podcast, Obama opened up about her current focus on mental health. She revealed that after years in the spotlight — including eight in the White House as first lady — she’s now turning to therapy to help guide her through this personal transition. “At this phase of my life, I’m in therapy right now because I’m transitioning, you know?” Michelle said, according to the magazine. “I’m 60 years old,

Today the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence released a report on the FBI’s investigation of James (“Tom”) Hodgkinson’s attempt to assassinate the Republican House members’ baseball team. You can read the report here. The Committee excoriates the FBI for mislabeling Hodgkinson’s firing of 70 rounds at Republican Congressmen an instance of “suicide by cop.” That claim never made any sense. Hodgkinson lived in Illinois, and if his overriding objective had been suicide, he didn’t need to drive to Washington, D.C. They have cops in Illinois. He didn’t need to case out the park

The only thing better than learning from your own mistakes is learning from someone else’s. Unfortunately, today’s urban leaders haven’t been paying attention. Los Angeles, San Francisco, Portland, Chicago, New York, and other cities could have avoided their current dire conditions if only they had heeded the lessons of Detroit. In 1950 the Motor City was home to nearly two million people and built half the cars in the world. Today two-thirds of those people are gone and its auto industry is a shell of its former self. After decades of decline, Detroit is on the way back with a new can-do attitude. But its troubled history gives today’s urban leaders

A man and his dog were killed in a suspected black bear attack in rural southwest Florida, prompting a search for the animal and warnings for residents to stay away from the area, state wildlife officials said Monday. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) said the deadly encounter occurred near Jerome, in Collier County, east of Naples and just south of the Big Cypress Wildlife Management Area. Authorities have not released the man's name or said exactly when the attack took place. FWC said preliminary information indicates the man and the dog died in the incident, which happened near the intersection of State Road 29 and U.S. 41.

Trump Should Shut Down Wildlife Services
to Save Animals and Taxpayer Dollars

Wildlife Services, a program within the United States Department of Agriculture, made headlines recently—and not for a good reason. Federal workers employed by the program recently killed a Mexican gray wolf that was wearing a tracker collar and thought to be pregnant. Wildlife Services called killing the endangered animal a "mistake." However, this isn’t the first time the program has made such a mistake, and it’s far from the worst thing its employees have done to animals. If the Trump administration wants to save animals and taxpayer dollars (and there is early evidence to suggest he is concerned with both), shutting down Wildlife Services should be a priority.
