A man and his dog were killed in a suspected black bear attack in rural southwest Florida, prompting a search for the animal and warnings for residents to stay away from the area, state wildlife officials said Monday. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) said the deadly encounter occurred near Jerome, in Collier County, east of Naples and just south of the Big Cypress Wildlife Management Area. Authorities have not released the man's name or said exactly when the attack took place. FWC said preliminary information indicates the man and the dog died in the incident, which happened near the intersection of State Road 29 and U.S. 41.

Florida's bear population is thought to be about 4,000, distributed in eight different populations between the Panhandle and Everglades-Big Cypress, once classified as threatened, has rebounded in recent decades. Even the relatively small black bears that live just north of here near Weeki Wachee can weigh 300#, which is quite enough. Bear sightings and interactions with people have become more common, particularly in rural areas of north and central Florida. Taking a dog or that dog's unarmed owner wouldn't be a big chore for a bear. Several years ago there was a controlled bear hunt--even Ted Nugent was there--that saw all its tags filled in a day and a half. Since then, there has not been another opportunity for the state's bear hunters. If bears get too numerous, some will have to be culled again, lest they cull any more people. Some black bears exhibit predatory behavior moreso than brown bears (grizzlies), and will kill and eat humans. It's rare for that to happen. But it's possible. Last week I read an essay encouraging Florida wildlife authorities to import jaguars from Central or South America to help clean up all the invasive species like Burmese pythons. (Several decades ago, Florida imported Texas cougars to fortify the bloodlines of the rare Florida panther. That seems to have worked, somewhat.) Jaguars, the third largest cats in the world, are larger than African leopards. They can take full grown caimans (like alligators) in the water, drag them out, and eat them. There might still be one or two left in New Mexico or Arizona, but they're mostly far to the south. Would you like to see these colorful cats here?

Bears make good headlines when this happens but dogs kill on average 43 people in the US every year. Sadly, most are small children. There are, of course, exponentially more dogs than bears in the country but people should be aware of the dangers that all animals can pose, especially the human ones.

PolitiFact threw another "False" flag on their mountain of 1,095 Donald Trump "fact checks" on Wednesday. The dispute was whether Harvard gave the Department of Homeland Security the information they requested on their foreign students. They cited a recent press gaggle with the president: "Part of the problem with Harvard is that there are about 31% of foreigners coming to Harvard ... but they refuse to tell us who the people are," Trump told reporters May 25. "We want a list of those foreign students and we'll find out whether or not they're OK. Many will be OK, I assume. And I assume with Harvard many will be bad."

Sometimes, the smartest PR strategy is to tell the truth. It happens a lot that, of all the options available, telling the truth is your best choice. Clients hate that! “Why the hell am I paying you money if I’m just gonna tell the truth?! I could’ve done that on my own!” They’re disappointed if there’s no smoke, mirrors, or magic act. Alas, most of the time, a client’s PR options are finite. The “facts on the ground” almost always limit your choices. I can’t “sell” a story that isn’t credible, so reality keeps you grounded — especially in an outcome-based endeavor like PR. Trust me on this, folks:

Donald Trump got some good news from a Florida judge Wednesday: his lawsuit against the Pulitzer Board may continue, meaning he can carry on his quest to hold them accountable for first issuing prizes to the New York Times and the Washington Post for their fake Russia-Russia-Russia coverage and then doubling down by claiming that there was no false information in any of those outlets’ stories. No proof of Russian collusion with the 2016 Trump campaign was ever produced, and the Robert Mueller investigation ended with a thud and no charges, yet the Board stood by their decision. They even commissioned a review of the Post and Times’ stories

Keith Olbermann unwisely took a jab at former NCAA star swimmer Riley Gaines over her athleticism. It didn't work out very well for him. Olbermann, who has a history of going after prominent conservative-leaning women on social media from the safety of his basement studio, opted to take a shot at Gaines after Education Secretary Linda McMahon suggested she would have won her race had it not been for a biological male participating in the event. "She finished 85th in the Olympic Trials," he responded. "She finished tied for 5th in the only race including a transgendered athlete. If there had been none, she MIGHT have finished tied for 4th,

When an industry requires endless subsidization, that means it’s signaling a lack of potential—both short-term and long-term—so it’s *probably* a bad investment. According to Matt Oliver at The Telegraph, new numbers from the electric vehicle industry show that these cars are depreciating rapidly, much faster than their gasoline counterparts; after just two years of ownership, these cars are worth less than half of what their owners originally paid. (I mean, we tried telling them these were foolish purchases, but they didn’t want to listen.) Here’s this, per Oliver: A typical EV now retains only 49pc of its value after 24 months, a sharp decline from 83pc as recently as 2022,

Poor, poor Michelle Obama. The former First Lady has to decide which of her three multi-million dollar estates to spend the night in. She has to deal with a fawning leftist press that treats her like she’s some sort of goddess. Her husband was once one of the most widely adored politicians on the planet, she never has to work another day in her life if she doesn’t want to, and she has two grown children who are healthy and apparently happy. But it’s all so stressful. Lately, for reasons only known to herself, she’s been podcasting with her brother on a low-rated show called "IMO with Michelle Obama & Craig Robinson,"

HARTFORD, CT- Once again, Connecticut Democrats have come down on the wrong side of an 80/20 issue. Last week, the House Democratic majority advanced legislation that will force municipalities to abide by the state’s so-called “Trust Act,” which permits “any aggrieved person” to seek an injunction against a municipality or its agents, including police and school employees, that cooperate with federal immigration officials, the CT Mirror reports. The bill was revised after pro-illegal alien advocates argued that municipalities, i.e., police departments, can ignore the state law already in place that defines when police and others can alert federal agents to the location of

Poor Lesley Stahl, bless her Trump-loathing heart. The veteran CBS News reporter not only doesn't see a way out of the horrors visited upon America by President Donald Trump; she's also "kind of down" as a result. Please. The CBS "60 Minutes" correspondent appears in a fearmongering PBS special, titled "How Much Executive Power Is Too Much? Breaking the Deadlock: A Power Play," which masquerades as an in-depth look at the executive powers of the presidency. Yes, gang — without reading another word, you can already tell that the dumpster-fire special is simply another hit piece on Trump in which he's portrayed as a threat to democracy.

Democrats love to preach about transparency and democracy, but the latest revelations from inside Joe Biden’s campaign expose a deception that borders on a constitutional crisis. We now know that Biden wasn’t just a weak candidate; he was a figurehead propped up by unelected aides who planned to run the country in his place. In a stunning exchange on Fox News Sunday, a chilling revelation from Alex Thompson, co-author with Jake Tapper of “Original Sin,” laid bare what many of us on the right had long suspected about Joe Biden’s bid for a second term: It was never about serving — it was about installing a shadow presidency

The subject of recent books detailing his decline, Biden is apparently having trouble bringing in speaking fees and difficulty fundraising for his presidential library, The Wall Street Journal reports. Perhaps this should come as no surprise. After Biden’s catastrophic 2024 debate performance against Trump revealed the extent of his declining health and marked the end of his campaign, why would anyone pay the former president to speak? And who would want to fund a Biden presidential library, as a monument

The first pictures have emerged of a North Korean warship seemingly covered in tarpaulin after it capsized and sank in front of dictator Kim Jong Un. Satellite images appear to show the naval destroyer languishing on its side alongside the dock where a launch ceremony had been held. But the launch failed, and analysis of pictures taken on Thursday suggest the ship is now partially submerged and covered with bright blue tarpaulins in an apparent attempt to conceal the wreckage. State media said the the 5,000-ton ship, which had been due to enter service next year, is designed to carry weapons systems including nuclear-capable ballistic and cruise missiles.

An Arkansas kindergarten graduation descended into madness when a large brawl broke out between parents, forcing school officials to scold the “unacceptable” behavior displayed in front of the little tykes. Several adults threw punches at each other in the hallway of West Memphis’ Faulk Elementary on Wednesday as the frightened screams of nearby children filled the crowded corridor. Multiple men and women were in the center of the melee, plowing through the school as other parents rushed to get their children away from the danger, according to video obtained by WREG. Kids could also be heard crying “stop” in the video.

This week, we saw a spate of news stories blaming Democrats’ troubles on their vocabulary. They’re just using too many darn multisyllabic, academic-sounding words and turning off numbskull voters, is the basic message. Seriously? The Democrats’ problem isn’t linguistic, it’s ideological. But no one in the party wants to admit that. A Washington Post story this week – “Democratic troubles revive debate over left-wing buzzwords” – begins by saying: Maybe it’s using the word ‘oligarchs’ instead of rich people. Or referring to ‘people experiencing food insecurity’ rather than Americans going hungry. Or ‘equity’ in place of ‘equality,’ or ‘justice-involved populations’ instead of prisoners.

What should have been a solemn tribute to the men and women who laid down their lives for this country turned into yet another chapter in the Biden family memoir. The Justice Department on Thursday formally notified the American Bar Association that it will no longer comply with its ratings process for judicial nominees, the result of what it argues is a biased system and one that "invariably and demonstrably" favors nominees put forth by Democratic administrations. The Department of Justice said it will no longer grant the ABA the "special treatment" and first access it has received, revoking decades of precedent where the ABA interviewed and vetted potential members of the incoming DOJ team. "Accordingly, while the ABA is free to comment on judicial nominations, there is no justification for treating the ABA differently from such other activist organizations

House Republicans likely dodged a political bullet when they opted against including tax hikes on the wealthy in this year’s reconciliation bill. Trump promised his voters across-the-board tax cuts while campaigning, but once confronted with the difficult math of paying for his expensive agenda, the president — and some members of the GOP caucus — began to wobble. So long as Senate Republicans stick with their colleagues in the lower chamber and avoid adding tax hikes to the “big, beautiful” bill, they’ll avoid paying a steep political price at the ballot box.
