Donald Trump has announced that he’s reopening Alcatraz as a federal prison for the worst of the worst in America. I couldn’t be more delighted, because it’s a wonderful idea at both practical and symbolic levels.
Trump made the announcement on Truth Social:It’s to be hoped that many of the new residents will be the same Tren de Aragua and MS-13 terrorists that the leftists insist remain on American soil.
The media grimly reported the news, although they hastened to add that it won’t be easy to turn the old site into a modern prison. AP is representative of this approach to reporting:

Good real estate for it, but bad idea. Cheaper to execute those on death row, to free up room for other criminals. But the incarceration and judicial industry wouldn't like that.

Figure out how many politicians it will hold, then put in twice as many.

Good luck staffing it! Who wants to work on an island with the worst of the worst and back up too far away?

It's the perfect prison, even without renovation. Dump the dirty filth there, leave the doors open and don't hire any security. Airdrop food once a month and let the animals fight over it. Don't leave anything there that floats and let them try to swim away. The population of Great Whites in the area can serve as the security and waste disposal system.

Gitmo makes a lot more sense. Too far for the media to camp out and report daily. There are no good shots for them to film either.

It doesn't need to be made into a modern prison. Don't even paint it, just make sure the prison doors lock and toss them in.

As the writer notes, if anyone can get Alcatraz up and running, on budget and on time, it's Donald J. Trump.
Whether it's patrolling and protecting our borders, building a wall to keep criminals out of the US, or rebuilding a prison to keep the worst criminals away from the rest of society, middle America already knows what side dems, commies, Marxists and the MSM will be on. With the left, it's never about what middle America needs or deserves. It's always about prioritizing the "rights" of those who least respect or care about the rights of others.

There's no problem with Alcatraz being a National Historic Landmark and a working institution. I think most of the government buildings in downtown Washington fit that category, certainly the White House and Capitol Building.
And yes, it is the symbology of the building that makes such an interesting project.

#3 is absolutley right. What is worse, it is plain to see that it is impossible to repair that 100 year concrete that has been in the salt air for a century. This whole celebration of a dumb idea is embarrassing as it shows that conservatives can virtue signal as intensely as a liberal. Get real.

It's a scenic island. Decent climate, if a little on the cool side. I'll bet the cells are bigger too.
But you know Governor Smiley will oppose it, denying Californians not just the added security of more cells on a remote, escape-proof island , but millions of dollars in income from relatively good jobs.

Criminal illegals can be parked there for years, waiting for their hearings. No judge can interfere,
A great deterrent.

Dumb idea:
1. It’s on a tiny island. It would be really expensive to expand.
2. It’s very expensive to maintain. That’s why it was shut down.
3. It currently makes money as a tourist attraction.
4. You’d have local lefties breaking them out.

Three men did escape long ago. Never seen or heard from again and every administrator, guard and warden said they all drowned. I'm not so sure. Anyway, if I got to make the decision, I'd tear down everything there and rebuild new. This is actually not a bad idea.

Is Trump proposing this because of resistance to the Wartime Alien Enemies Act? If he can't deport, he will house them in Alcatraz.

I think a better place would be San Clemente Island, 50 miles west of San Diego. It is currently used by the Navy as a target for ship and aircraft bombardment practice. Plenty of room and the terrorist gangsters would keep busy dodging all that firepower. A long swim to civilization. MAGA!

When I was in the Navy I got stationed on my first shore duty command in the Bay Area of California. This was a few years after Pete Wilson became governor, and Slick Willey Clinton became my C-in-C in the mid 90s. One of my favorite tourist attractions to go to was Alcatraz. It did house the worst of the worst including guys like Al Capone, Whitey Bulger and Jimmy Walnuts. Since I know the history of the place I agree with everyone especially #18 who say that the idea is ridiculous. #9 is right GITMO would be a far better option.

Nah. Too many lefties in the federal district court in San Francisco. They'd be claiming that incarceration in Alcatraz is cruel and unusual punishment. Better to keep shipping the arrested detainees to Texas where the sensible judges are more commonly found.

This is genius...Alcatraz is the perfect solution to hold illegal alien criminals until their court date demanded by the leftie Washington DC whackos....stick that in your pipe ACLU and smoke it along with the other weeds in the pipe....whatever happened to Gitmo...I thought some illegal aliens were going to be sent there....so much news...it's hard to keep up with everything....but for now...Alcatraz is an excellent idea...makes me smile.....

I don't know for sure if President Trump is serious about this idea, or its one if his "trolls", but once again he has made a suggestion that gets people talking. This time about our prison system. I'd love to see him open a new "beautiful" Alcatraz. It might focus the attention of San Fran pols (looking at you Nancy!) to gaze upon their possible future.

Chill out; it'll be years before it gets done but I love the idea of putting the worst of the worst where they can only swim back if the sea is calm.* Besides, the criminals could get a bit of satisfaction from knowing they live in a museum. *It is rarely calm.
