The pharmaceutical industry estimates President Donald Trump’s new drug pricing proposal could cost drug companies as much as $1 trillion over a decade, its largest trade group is telling members of Congress. The idea, first floated last week by the White House as a way to help pay for the president’s tax cut plan, blindsided the pharmaceutical industry and has prompted a furious lobbying campaign. Like duh, If we stop ripping off American consumers to the tune of $1T, it's going to cost our industry $1T. They admit they are overcharging Americans. They sell to foreign countries cheaper. So they unleash their lobbyists. Congress, who are elected to represent the lobbyists, not their constituents, of course will give the lobbyists whatever they want.

You can bet your sweet ass that anything that might cause the pharmaceutical Industry a dollar will bring out their checkbook for the politicians they own. They have been screwing over Americans for years while selling the same medications in other countries for less money. This is similar to the tariff's, why should we be subsidizing other countries medications by United States citizens paying the premium.?

The reason we have a really good suite of innovative drugs is because our US pricing supports r snd d. The reason drugs can be sold at less cost to poorer countries is s bit economic and a bit humanitarian. It is obviously cheaper to manufacture a drug than it is to design, test, obtain approval for, a drug, and economics rewards market expansion. And for humanitarian reasons, we donate or sell cheap drugs, war weapons, foodstuffs, etc. Certainly, pulling a trillion out off the top line of drug manufacture will have significant (but unpredictable) effects on new drug developments, and that is not to be taken lightly. I do not believe either the gov, or the industry, on their future predictions

If requiring U.S. drug industry to sell to American citizens at the same price they charge everyone else in the world will cost them $1 Trillion over a decade, isn't that another way of saying they are ripping Americans off by $100 Billion per year?? The companies would not be "losing" the $1T - they would just not be stealing $1 T from us. If they would just stop running nuisance TV commercials on every channel every 20 minutes that would make up their "loss."

U.S. pharmacies cannot negotiate drug prices as effectively as their European counterparts because the U.S. lacks a centralized system, has legal barriers to broad negotiation, and allows manufacturers to set prices with minimal oversight. In contrast, European countries use national agencies to negotiate prices, assess value, and control costs across the entire population. This proposal would be a start. Banning ads for drugs would also contribute to reducing drug company expenses and allow them to maintain their margins at lower price points.

The prescription pharmaceutical business used to be called the "ethical drug" business back when I joined it in the 1980s (and before).' It went to h-e-double-hockey sticks when the snake oil marketers showed up in the early 90s with their ideas of direct-to-consumer advertising and deciding that what used to be called "detail men" needed to be "pharmaceutical sales representatives," usually hired from college cheerleader squads, buying everything from dinner to gasoline to hardware at Home Depot to gain favor for their products.

American taxpayers and consumers have been subsidizing the world's pharmaceutical market for decades. We provide all the funding for research, they reap the benefits and pay cut-rate prices. This has to stop.

US Big Pharma has charged US customers more than what they charge in foreign countries. Drug companies make drugs in this country, ship it to Canada where it can be sold for less and then and be shipped back to this country for a lower price than US customers have to pay in this country. To quote someone we know, “they have been rippling us off for years.” It is not logical for drugs that don’t get shipped twice to cost more than those that do

I am fortunate enough to be in good health and take zero drugs, not even aspirin. Most of the junk medicine on the market is comprised of psychologically promoted placebos that often have worse side effects than what they are advertised to help. No new drugs would be an overall good thing. People and doctors keep the market going out of habit and attempting to "cure" things caused by bad habits, eating the wrong foods and getting no exercise. The new wave of effortless weight loss shots are especially concerning.
