Chicago fur ban advances in City Council,
furriers warn it would end their businesses

Chicago was founded by fur traders. Now, it might soon kick them out. An ordinance banning the sale of new fur products advanced in the City Council Tuesday, setting up a final vote as soon as next week. Ald. Raymond Lopez, the ban’s author, hopes the move will stifle the “barbaric and inhumane” fur industry, and said existing furriers need to evolve. “We know we can transition away from formerly live fur products,” Lopez, 15th, told aldermen.

Comments:

One of the coldest places on Earth may ban furs.

A distraction from: February 25, 2025 "In January 2023, shortly before the February Chicago mayoral elections, former Mayor Lori Lightfoot had a dismal 22% approval rating. Current Mayor Brandon Johnson’s approval has now sunk even lower, to only 6.6% in the latest poll, as issues such as rising crime concern residents of the Windy City."

I’m glad to see my old home town is addressing serious issues. I left that once great city 41 years ago and have no desire to return. The furriers could move to the North Shore or other wealthy areas in DuPage County like Oak Brook, Burr Ridge, or Hinsdale.

Wow, wait until they find out what hamburgers are made of! Fur farming is heavily regulated. It does not benefit fur farmers to mistreat their animals as the abuse will show up in the fur. The death of the animal and harvesting of the fur is also well regulated. Anthropomorphizing animals, most especially vicious little predators, that would have no issue killing your pets or poultry is stupid. Fur bearing animals do not make good pets. They are destructive when not in their own habitat and even then their numbers must be kept in check. Fur is warm, long lasting, natural, biodegradable, and reusable. A well cared for fur coat can be used for 25 years, then restyled and used another 25. Try that with polyester or rayon or some other fabric made from oil. The war on fashion and materials that last beyond the next season has been going on for some time. It is wasteful and totally driven by corrupt consumerist industries. Try buying a leather handbag, you have to really look for one, even when paying $150+. It's all vegan leather (plastic) or faux leather (more plastic) and you are lucky if it lasts a year. Same with shoes. They are all cheaply made overseas out of plastic. Clothes are so bad now they are practically disposable. I was struck going through my mother in laws clothing after she passed how many older suits she had, some 30 years old, that look fantastic and with some modifications could be very serviceable for years. But you can't sell mass quantities if you produce products that don't have be replaced every year.

CNN allowed former television show host Bill Nye to claim that Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) head Elon Musk wanted to replace the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) weather satellites with Starlink Monday. Roughly 880 staffers at NOAA, including many who were on probationary status, were laid off Thursday, CBS News reported, with some of the laid-off employees holding a protest outside the agency’s headquarters. Nye claimed Musk found a “vulnerable part” in the federal government to seize public assets for himself, but never offered evidence.

"Bruised but motivated," was how one of Volodymyr Zelensky's entourage described how they had been feeling, as a small group of journalists crammed into what felt like an even smaller room at Stansted Airport. The British state had done its best to give the Ukrainian president "all bells and whistles" when he arrived in the UK for a summit with 18 world leaders after his dressing down by Donald Trump and JD Vance on Friday night, a government source told me. He shared an embrace with Sir Keir Starmer outside No 10, where he was greeted with spontaneously cheering crowds, and met with King Charles for tea.

While drinking tree sap does not immediately sound appealing, Canadian producers are hoping that it will be the next must-try soft drink around the world. We have all heard of maple syrup, which is made by boiling down the sap of maple trees to produce a thick, sweet, golden-to-brown coloured syrup that is typically poured over pancakes. What is far less well known is that you can drink the sap itself, which is called maple water. Clear in colour, it contains just 2% natural sugars, so it is only slightly sweet.

But Gutfeld’s indisputably superb ratings are yet more proof that the right is ascendant in the culture wars and that more and more Americans are craving comedy and commentary from fresh, independent voices.

But one of the most disgusting moments of the evening came when they refused to acknowledge a young boy with brain cancer for something that was about as far from partisan as you can get.
