Court upholds town bylaw banning anyone
born in 21st century from buying tobacco products

A Massachusetts town that adopted an unusual ordinance banning the sale of tobacco to anyone born in the 21st century is being looked at as a possible model for other cities and towns hoping to further clamp down on cigarettes and tobacco products. The bylaw — the first of its kind in the country — was adopted by Brookline in 2020 and last week was upheld by the state’s highest court, opening the door for other communities to adopt similar bans that will, decades from now, eventually bar all future generations from buying tobacco.

Considering that Brookline is not that big an enclave municipality surrounded by Boston, tobacco purchases can be made by walking a few blocks or while gassing up. This ordinance just hurts business in Brookline.

#3,Firarms are already banned in Brookline. In MA you need a class A concealed carry permit to own or posess a firearm, ammunition, empty shells or any part of a firearm. The issuance ofvthat carry permit is solely up to the town chief of police. He can deny for any reason, or no reason at all. The Chief of Police in Brookline has never, and never will issue a permit to anyone for any reason. There are several towns in MA with like minded police chiefs. I don't know how this has not reached federal courts, clearly unconstitutional but right now its the law in MA. Also, by law, in MA you have no right to self defense. It is not allowed as a legal defense in court.

I grew up in a wet city within a dry county in Kentucky. The liquor stores here did a booming business since the people in all the surrounding dry towns would come here to buy booze. Also, for a long time the sale of certain types of fireworks was banned in Kentucky. People would drive to the Tennessee line to buy them. Brookline will try, but I think those who want to smoke or vape will find a way. BTW, I hate smoking with a passion but some people like a couple of my siblings are hooked.

In a video address to the AIPAC conference in Washington, D.C., Netanyahu said, “To win this war, we must destroy the remaining Hamas battalions in Rafah. If not, Hamas will regroup, rearm and reconquer Gaza and then we’re back to square one. And that’s an intolerable threat that we cannot accept.” He then restated the three war goals set forth by the government “We will destroy Hamas, free our hostages and ensure that Gaza doesn’t ever pose a threat to Israel again.”
