A tearful Mitch McConnell has announced he will be stepping down as the longest-serving Senate leader in history and admitted 'father time remains undefeated.'
The Republican senator, who turned 82 last week, choked up on the Senate floor as he revealed he will leave the position he's served in for almost 18 years in November after a 'painful time' that included the death of his sister-in-law.
McConnell has battled constant calls to step down in recent months over his support for sending more aid to Ukraine and is the last member of the Republican leadership not to have endorsed Donald Trump's 2024 presidential bid.

Didn't he just have a chat with Trump a couple of days ago? Please correct me if I'm mistaken. I haven't been on top of all the news this week...

He did keep Merrick Garland off the SCOTUS, probably his greatest achievement. But the last eight years, meh.

McConnell resigning because he knew he would not be leader when Trump takes over. I hope none of those other John's that stand behind him are the next leader either.

His only achievement was keeping Garland off the Supreme Court- for which he deserves recognition.

DING DONG! ...and all that. Maybe now they will elect a minority leader that won't simply go along to get along or who is not already so close to death he can't fight the Democrats off. Oh, and you RINOs, you might as well follow him off into the sunset.

Why wait until November? Resign now. Why don't the Senate r's convene and replace him now in preparation for the upcoming reelection war and in case he dies or becomes incapacitated before November?

Notice the timing of this pond scum traitor stepping down? After the election and you can take it to his Chinese bank that this wizened doddering back stabbing stealth communist death democrat will move heaven and earth to make sure President Trump is defeated, the republicans do not take control of either the Senate or the House. This evil spawn of Satan should be removed immediately by the republicans in the Senate. Not holding my breath on this one.

Good news. Mitch did a LOT of harm over the years, but his one shining moment was the time he blocked Merritt Garland from even coming up for a vote for SCOTUS.
Frankly....now that we know what kind of an evil, soulless, ethics free thug Garland is, perhaps the rest of the harm is almost balanced out by protecting us from this piece of garbage having a lifetime of harm on the Supreme Court.

You folks that think keeping Garland off the supreme court was a great accomplishment... I have to disagree with. There, he would be only one of nine opinions.
As Attorney General of the U.S. He can destroy lives (or even TAKE lives with FBI SWAT teams.) at 0'biden's orders or his own personal whim.

Beltway backchannel scuttlebut sez...There were plans being made to force him out, IMMEDIATELY, the final straw was him siding with Biden and Schumer to gang up on on the House speaker during the Oval Office meeting 2 days ago. He pre-empted that with this sudden announcement, key difference? Instead of being forced out NOW, he stays until November, and intends to serve his full term.
Will he use this time to continue to undercut the house and conservatives? Sidin' with Biden? Or will he use his time left to join with, act for, and support the party majority?
Anyone can see which way the winds are blowing, after super tuesday it will be clear to even the blind...he can climb aboard and steer towards the inevitable, or PROVE he is a traitor to the will of the people, the Party, and likely be ousted against his will long before Nov.
This is a last gasp ploy to hold on a little longer, and behind the scenes he is promising to "Be better, Do Better".

Besides the three Supremes,, McConnell helped bring over 200 more Federal Appeals and District Court judges through the nomination process which has changed the Federal Judiciary for a generation.

Ldotters are very generous people. Giving McConnell kudos because he prevented Garland from becoming a Supreme Court judge was his JOB. Getting those Trump judges to the bench, was his JOB. Undermining conservative Republican senatorial candidates, holding them hostage to campaign money whose purse strings he holds, sabotaging the duly elected conservative Republican President, Donald J. Trump, was not his job. Promoting and supporting dementia Joe's and schmucky Schumer's and the communist agenda was and is not his job.
So spare me the thanks for the few thing he did correctly that were his job. He needs to go today.

Notice that McConnell told the country that he would leave his leadership position effectively after the November General Election. In political terms announcing that possible departure so long in advance can be said to get opposing Republicans off his back at least until the General Election. In reality what McConnell was saying is that if his old Senate buddy Biden wins the election that he will reconsider and stay, but if the outsider Trump wins the election that he will leave his leadership position and fade into a back bencher position and then history.
