Mary Poppins has had its age rating lifted from U to PG because it contains 'discriminatory language' - but the word in question is so obscure you may have never noticed it. The British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) now considers the 1964 tale of Julie Andrews' magical nanny to be not suitable for children to watch alone, despite the film enchanting generations of youngsters. The reclassification is due to the use of the word Hottentots. The dated term was historically used by Europeans to refer to the Khoekhoe, a group of nomadic herders in South Africa, but is now regarded as racially offensive.

Well, if the critics at the BBFC are so offended, why not outlaw the possession of all existing copies of the movie? What's not permitted is not permitted. There's no U.S. Constitution and its associated rights in this place. Go for it all, just the way your fellow lime squeezers did with guns. ... As if any Englishman below ago 70 would know who the Hottentots were. (The first reference to "Hottentot" I remember was in a column by William F. Buckley, from fifty or more years ago. Looked it up. Mr. Buckley's writing led me to look a lot of things up. If I hadn't learned from him then, I would have thought that the Hottentots were some Irish or British football club.)

In the movie "It Happened One Night" Claudette Colbert makes a crack about Armenians. Hope it doesn't get banned because I love the movie. Former Georgia governor and senator Zell Miller opposed The Beverly Hillbillies because it depicted country folks as backward. Heck, I'm a hillbilly whose preferred musical genre is opera. I don't want people protecting me. I'm a big boy and can take it.

The Order of the Perpetually Offended are really reaching on this one. The under-educated of today probably think "Hottentots" are a cross between Hot Pockets and Tater Tots. What has the Perpetually Offended's panties in a twist is the Bank's family; a strong father, a loving mother and two adorable children. The movie portrays the stresses being felt in families with the emergence of the modern world; a hard-working corporate father, a socially-conscious mother involved in causes away from the home, resulting in neglected children acting out. The conflicts in goals, needs and aspirations are smoothed over and resolved by a mysterious and magical nanny. However, the nanny has a love interest in the chimney sweep that also affirms the man-woman pairing necessary for a stable society. Way too much normality going on! Mary Poppins shows the way out of dysfunction into happiness. That is the cardinal sin of this movie, but that's too long for a protest sign. So, "Hottentots!" is the outrage selected to dirty-up "Mary Poppins" as unfit for this generation's youngsters. Our enemy is getting desperate...and that's a good sign.

The term "Hottentot" was invented by the Dutch and referred to the click language used by South African pygmies. To the Dutch, it sounded like gibberish. If you want to read a great work on the racist exploitation by the British, French, and Dutch toward the Hottentot people of the time, read "The Hottentot Venus". The language in Mary Poppins is appropriate for the times, but the origins are truly racist.

In win for Paxton, court declares $1.7
trillion federal omnibus was passed unconstitutionally

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton on Tuesday secured a major victory in his challenge to the $1.7 trillion omnibus spending package passed in 2022, with a court declaring that the bill was approved unconstitutionally. President Joe Biden signed the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2023 in December of the prior year. The measure effectively set the federal budget for the year by wrapping the 12 annual appropriations bills into a single piece of legislation. Paxton, however, had argued that the House's passage of the measure was unconstitutional as less than half of the lower chamber's members were physically present to vote on it.

Superior Court Judge Scott McAfee’s chambers notified attorneys in the case by email late Monday that certain communications Terrence Bradley had with Wade are not protected by attorney-client privilege, according to numerous people who read the email. Bradley could be compelled to testify as soon as Tuesday afternoon.

If you had told the average person that an anarchist or an airman had set himself on fire to protest Israel’s campaign against Islamic terrorists, you would get two very different reactions. Unsurprisingly the media led with the data point most likely to produce a favorable reaction.
