The massive outage that knocked out cellphone service for tens of thousands of AT&T users for hours Thursday was likely caused by a glitch in a software update — as viral photos show helpless AT&T store workers being harassed by angry customers.

Pffft!
ATT was only one of a dozen or more networks which crashed including tge GOES16 satellite which went off line. Look to that big bright thing in the sky and our weakenng magnetic field.
But they can't be controlled, can they?

And was it "normal" incompetence, or some Affirmative Action incompetent person or persons?

Doubt this is the real reason for the outage across so many areas.

"Helpless workers"? Yep, that's all too common. I went to T-Mobile when they told us our phones would stop working because of "5G" crap. The first two "technicians" we spoke to were clueless, and the one guy (white) who knew something was talking to another customer. The useless affirmative action folks just lounged around and "helped" a few other customers with simple things. Finally, the one smart guy was free and we quickly found out that, No, our phones won't stop working, but we can get "free, newer, better phones" if we wanted. We didn't want once we found out that a simple software upgrade, that he could do in 15 minutes while we waited was all that was needed to be good for years. We did the upgrades, thanked the ONE competent T-mobile employee.
The only reason we have T-mobile is that a very good, long time friend, now deceased, was a VP of Technology for Sprint here in KC. So, we had Sprint phones for years. When he died, another Sprint employee friend took over our "friends and family" account, getting us a cheaper deal. Then T-mobile bought out Sprint, fired everyone and there we are. We use our phones as 90% phones, occasionally looking up stuff in a restaurant or doc office, but they are NOT the center of our universe, and often get left home by accident. The easy calling is handy at times, but they are not any kind of a real replacement for a computer, IMO. I hate the tiny screen and crap keyboard.
I can touch type (which makes my posts long winded, I know) and have a 25" wide screen at home, and even the laptop is 15 inches. the crap little screen is just irritating, as is the crummy keyboard. Phones are for calling and occasional emergency net use. I can't understand how the kids use them for everything. How aweful.

It's entirely possible, in fact probable, that a network change or update failed in execution.(they take place VERY frequently) Updates aren't done at each node individually, there are hundreds of them. Instead, a change is made at a single point and distributed throughout the system. It's why the outage was so widespread. As for other carriers, many buy time on bigger networks such as ATT or Verizon and resell the time. Additionally, someone NOT on ATT would fail trying to call an ATT (or associated) customer, and think it was his phone system down. Calm down everybody.

LOL, numerous cell networks and other electronic networks went offline or had trouble. But, the government told them what to pass on the the vastly low IQ public. Sorry, there are many of us that aren't buying your BS. IMO this was a test by the Chinese, we are a very soft target with the pedophile in charge.

I keep repeating myself here that the large majority of people tearing up America and the world are old white people. Every black person with a job is not an affirmative action hire, and every white person with a job is not competent.

"The massive outage that knocked out cellphone service for tens of thousands of AT&T users for hours"
Gee, it must have affected the phone belonging to the person who wrote this article.
Where were they, Noo Yawk City?
If 'tens of thousands' of customers out here in Flyover country had lost their 'phone service for a half day, the Media would have reported it as a 'minor glitch'.... IF it was reported at all.
"Tens of thousands" out of how many cell 'phones in the USA..... 311 MILLION or so?
As large as the outage was, it was a drop in the bucket compared to the whole system.
By the way, I am in full agreement with posters #1 through #8, particularly #5 and #6.

I worked for AT&T back in the late 1980's. Every time they implemented software changes they did it on LIVE systems. I finally talked them into setting up clone systems to the Live systems so they could actually test the software release to assure it would work properly. Apparently they didn't learn that lesson!

A UAT (User Acceptance Test) prior to the software “upgrade” would have caught this! I know testing is for weenies but outages are caused by bad coding in at least 80% of Production “disruptions”!

I worked 35 years in telecommunications. More than once, I have seen an incompetent technician or a bad software update reek havoc across the network. Hanlon's Razor.

Called it... management is useless in the technical world. They just cut costs regardless of the degradation to service.
