ARRIAGA, Mexico - A new migrant caravan of approximately 2,000 people formed in southern Mexico on Monday, largely made up of people that have been on the move since Christmas Eve who say the Mexican government's promises of transit visas last week never materialized. The migrants, including some carrying young children, are walking to the southern Oaxaca town of Tapanatepec, about 800 kilometers (480 miles) south of Mexico City by road. They hope to reach Tapanatepec by nightfall. The group of mostly Central American and Caribbean migrants are ultimately headed for the U.S. border, the caravan's leader Luis Villagran said. Last

CHICAGO – Multiple factors likely contribute to why only a small fraction of asylum seekers in Chicago have received permits to work legally. CBS 2's Sabrina Franza reported how only about 1% of the 26,000 migrants in the city have received their documents with assistance from the city and she dug into why the number is so low. The number really boils down to three things: the cost of the application, the availability of documents, and the significant demand. (Snip) The cost to fill out the application is over $400. There is a form to waive that cost. Conway's office has

CHICAGO – As the suburbs continue to take a stand on arriving migrants, Chicago is running out of funds to help them, and space to house them. As CBS 2's Marybel Gonzalez reported, migrants are still choosing Chicago as their landing spot in the U.S. Even as temperatures drop in Chicago, the city continues to be a hot spot for new arrivals. CBS 2 spoke with a person running some of the shelters along the southern border about why this could be. "What we're seeing is that it is fluctuating greatly from day to day," said John Martin. The flip side is across the top up here, across the bottom down here, those are the evangelical rural counties that Ted Cruz beat Donald Trump in 2016. Trump is expected to run it up there.
