OPEC’s top official urged member countries in a letter to reject any agreements that target fossil fuels at the latest climate negotiations. Producers should “proactively reject any text or formula that targets energy” in the form of “fossil fuels rather than emissions,” Secretary-General Haitham Al Ghais said in the letter to OPEC’s 13 members.
The COP28 climate talks in Dubai, which are due to conclude early next week, are playing out with delegations positioning themselves on either side of a clearly drawn battle line: whether or not they can commit to phasing out fossil fuels. Al Ghais said he was concerned by the possibility that the meeting might

Ryan O’Neal, the boyish leading man who kicked off an extraordinary 1970s run in Hollywood with his Oscar-nominated turn as the Harvard preppie Oliver in the legendary romantic tearjerker Love Story, has died. He was 82.
O’Neal died Friday, his son Patrick O’Neal, a sportscaster with Bally Sports West in Los Angeles, reported on Instagram. He had been diagnosed with chronic leukemia in 2001 and with prostate cancer in 2012.
“As a human being, my father was as generous as they come,” Patrick wrote. “And the funniest person in any room. And the most handsome clearly, but also the most charming. Lethal combo. He loved to make people laugh.

Former House speaker Kevin McCarthy endorsed former president Donald Trump for president in 2024 just days after announcing his retirement from the House.
Asked in a sit-down interview with CBS News Sunday Morning whether he’d endorse Trump, McCarthy answered, “I will support President Trump.”
The California congressman also said he believes “Donald Trump will win” if the Democratic Party nominates President Joe Biden for a second term. If that happens, “I believe that Republicans will gain more seats in the House and that Republicans will win the Senate,” he added.

A United Nations Security Council resolution to demand a ceasefire in Gaza has failed because it was vetoed by the US.
Of the 15 representatives on the UN member council, 13 voted to back the call but the US blocked it and the UK abstained.
After the vote, US deputy ambassador Robert Wood criticized the council after the vote for its failure to condemn Hamas' 7 October attack on Israel, and for failing to acknowledge Israel's right to defend itself. He declared that halting military action would allow Hamas to continue to rule and "only plant the seeds for the next war, because Hamas has no desire to see a durable peace,

WASHINGTON — A federal appeals court in Washington, D.C., on Friday upheld but narrowed the gag order that had been imposed on former President Donald Trump in his election interference case prohibiting him from making critical comments about potential witnesses and prosecutors.
"We agree with the district court that some aspects of Mr. Trump’s public statements pose a significant and imminent threat to the fair and orderly adjudication of the ongoing criminal proceeding, warranting a speech-constraining protective order," the appeals court ruled. "The district court’s order, however, sweeps in more protected speech than is necessary. For that reason, we affirm the district court’s order in part and vacate it in part."

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warned Hezbollah not to initiate a third Lebanon war with Israel, hours after the Iranian proxy group guided missile attack killed a 60-year-old Israeli man in northern Israel.
“If Hezbollah chooses to start an all-out war, then it will single-handedly turn Beirut and South Lebanon, not far from here, into Gaza and Khan Yunis. We are determined to bring victory, and we will do it with your help,” Netanyahu said.
He spoke during a visit to the IDF’s Northern Command Headquarters together with Defense Minister Yoav Gallant and IDF Chief-of-Staff Lt.-Gen. Herzi Halevi and the head of that sector Maj.-Gen. Ori Gordin.

United States regulators have approved the first therapy that uses a technology called CRISPR for gene editing.
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved a treatment for sickle cell disease that uses a technology called CRISPR, which can edit the genome to fix mistakes and reverse disease.
Sickle cell disease is caused by a genetic mistake that causes the body to produce malformed red blood cells, which can cause severe and debilitating pain. These therapies aim to fix that genetic mistake by introducing a functional version of the gene into the body. "Sickle cell disease is a rare, debilitating and life-threatening blood disorder with significant unmet need,

Yesterday, I wrote about the likelihood that Penn’s president, Liz Magill, will be replaced sometime soon, as support for her has essentially collapsed in the wake of her testimony before Congress in which she refused to denounce calls for the genocide of Jews by students clearly.
Well, it is becoming clear that Claudine Gay, Harvard’s president, will follow her out the door shortly after.
I have no inside knowledge, of course. It turns out that the Ivies don’t share their plans with me for some reason. But the political and financial pressure on the institutions is building so fast that it is hard to imagine that the boards of these corporations

An elderly Palestinian living in war-torn Gaza may be the bravest woman on the planet, telling an Al Jazeera reporter that the terror group/governmental entity Hamas takes all the aid delivered to the area and keeps it for themselves.
The people get nothing, she says:
...everybody is suffering...
All the aid goes to (the tunnels) underground. It does not reach all the people. We came here from Gaza City. All the aid is meant for us.
I'm not afraid (of Hamas). I am talking to them as well.
All the aid reaches the Gaza Strip, and --
At this point, the reporter -- clearly not happy with

Something has changed inside the Department of Justice, though it’s unclear exactly what might be going on under the covers. After years of stalling and obfuscation, doing everything possible to keep First Son Hunter Biden out of any legal trouble, the DOJ filed nine new charges against Hunter last night. None of them are trivial and three are quite serious. He was hit with three felony tax evasion charges and six related misdemeanors. The unpaid taxes add up to $1.4 million and they carry the potential of up to 17 years in prison. This is going to put Joe Biden in a very awkward position in short order and

The White House is frantically trying to distance itself from the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) after its executive director Nihad Awad claimed he was “happy” to watch the Oct. 7 Hamas terror attack unfold. Speaking at the 16th Annual Convention for Palestine in the U.S. on Nov. 24, he said that the people of Gaza were merely “breaking the siege”:
The people of Gaza only decided to break the siege, the walls of the concentration camp, on October 7th, and yes. I was happy to see people breaking the siege and throwing down the shackles of their own land and walk free into their lands that they were not allowed
