Chevrolet’s ad company knocks it out

Like Longfellow’s little girl, who had a little curl right in the middle of her forehead, sometimes ad agencies are very good indeed, and sometimes they’re horrid. When they’re good, it’s worth taking note because, as with all media, those short videos have a disproportionate effect on the American psyche. In the case of Chevy’s holiday ad, that effect can only be good. When I grew up in the 1960s and 1970s, in the pre-streaming age, you watched ads whether or not you wanted to. These years were the heydays of jingles and slogans. Indeed, for us, jingles were a family tradition.

This ad moved me deeply because I have lived it. This is my post from FB: As the "holidays" draw closer, remember your loved ones who are slowly drifting into themselves as a result of dementia and Alzheimer's. I know this pain all too well. My wonderful wife, Judy, began to slip away in mid-2015, and it was a long, slow, painful journey for both of us. The first time that she asked me who I was devastated me, and each time it happened after that cut me even deeper. This five-minute video might be an ad for Chevrolet, but it also tells a sad story that affects far too many families. There is no real cure for dementia, but there are things you can do to help those afflicted.

This Ad stands for everything that the woke GM/Chevrolet, who wants to shove electric cars down our throats, which are heavily subsidized by we, the taxpayer and are willing participants of the Communist Death Democrats plan to take away our freedom to own our own cars and be free to travel wherever we want to go really stands for so I for one, will not be swayed by this hypocritical, blatant attempt to convince us that they really are an America First company. How easily we all forget the illegal taxpayer (us) bailout that they eagerly accepted from Ex Dictator Obama and the communist controlled Congress and then promptly turned around and screwed the bond holders. Never forget what GM/Chevrolet really stands for. They are part of our enemies in this country who have nothing but contempt for us and our values..

Re: #2 - The message of the article and many of the replies have nothing to do with selling sheet metal and parts made in China. It's about the loss of cherished loved ones to dementia, often years before their bodies actually die. Sometimes, when in haste to show one's worldliness and hard boiled cynicism, it is easy to appear heartless and inconsiderate. My mother used to describe such behavior as "ugly." On her last day on Earth, in hospice care, she didn't recognize her own husband, son, or daughter of 60+ years, but she did recognize her smallest grandchildren and great grandchildren, including the youngest, who had been adopted several years prior as an infant. By then, Alzheimer's had even robbed her of the ability to chew and swallow food or sip water but she retained her loving concern for the little ones, even as she agonized over illogical and irrational belief that her own parents, both born in the late 1800s, were wondering where she was and why she wasn't at "home," home being the farmhouse her dad had built in 1940. In the aftermath of her passing, found hundreds of hand-written notes she had made, knowing her memory was fading but determined to hang on as best she could.

There is much criticism of this ad because it’s “emotionally manipulative.” But ask yourself, “Would I buy a Chevy just because of this ad?” Not me. I enjoyed the ad very much but it did not have the desired effect of making me switch allegiance from Toyota.

My grandmother and mother both suffered from Alzheimer's. When my grandmother was deep into her experience she stopped talking. She would watch us talk to each other and follow whom ever was talking. Eventually she stopped doing that and was essentially "gone". The nursing home where she was being cared for was having an event for Mother's Day so we all decided to visit her and went early to take her to the church service they were holding. And much to our surprise, after not talking for years, she sang all the songs. She was religious and grew up with faith and church services. Needless to say we were stunned. Then after some research I discovered that music seems to bring a lot of dementia sufferers a connection. After that we purchased religious music for her to enjoy. She had headphones and when they no longer worked for her we were able to get a player that had long cord with a small speaker device attached that we could clip to her collar. When my mother also went mute we did the same for her. Elvis was her favorite. When I hear an Elvis song to this day I always think of her. This "commercial" had nothing to do with buying a truck. It was saying don't forget those who are on the edge of leaving us. Remember the dementia affects their most current memories but the old ones are just like they happened yesterday. Consider music therapy. Unlike some here neither my grandmother or mother ever asked us who we were. They went mute before we ever had to deal with that situation.

Okay, I gave in to the hype and watched the whole thing. It was touching and an effective piece of propaganda. GM (Chevrolet) used to be one of our popular cars but their sellout to all things green can not be forgiven since we were forced to subsidize a big piece of it, once when Obama "loaned" our money to GM and it turned out to be a gift, it was mainly to pay off the union workers who helped him get elected, now the forced subsidy to the EVs that nobody is buying because they are a government, marketing, sales and technical failure. As ads go, it was better than the obnoxious woman pushing her LUME product or grossly obese people dancing happily because somebody filled them with the right drugs, food or music but reminders of a much better past only triggers my anger and disappointment in what it has turned into today.

Chevrolet had an excellent agency for more than 95 years which produced winning campaign after winning campaign. Then GM began to tank, largely due to bad management and Obama mixing things up. GM ditched all the legacy agencies that had served them well for generations, thinking the problem was messaging (sound familiar?). I haven't seen much since then to impress. I worked on Chevy direct mail at its legacy agency of record and was laid off before the bloodbath. Because so many were cashiered at once, employees couldn't even go back to their desks to retrieve their personal property ... there wasn't enough staff to escort them, so they had to come back to HR a week later to pick up their stuff. As part of an effort to win back some business, the agency moved its offices to Detroit at GM's behest and spent a fortune to renovate a historic warehouse. The work expected from GM was awarded to another agency. My family always had GM cars. For a variety of reasons, my regard for the company has long since evaporated.

I owned an older Suburban (not quite as old as the one in the commercial) and have worked in a senior facility with memory care. I enjoyed the ad for what it represents which is finding a way to stay in touch and be in the moment that those with dementia often experience which seems 180 degrees out of phase with our reality although it's real for them. Doesn't influence my vehicle buying decisions but I also won't take a pot shot at a worthy effort of reminding me and others of the importance of family and finding the small victories for those who deal with this insidious disease.

Our border is broken, inflation and crime are breaking Americans, and wars are breaking out all over. Still, the Biden administration is keeping its eye on the ball—and the ball, as Biden made clear during his now-famous speech given against an ominous blood-red background, is to destroy “Donald Trump and the MAGA Republicans,” whom he characterized as “represent[ing] an extremism that threatens the very foundations of our republic.” In Biden-world, the best way to recognize these American “Nazis” (for that’s what he’s calling them) is to identify and arrest everyone who showed up in D.C. on January 6, 2021. The latest victim is Siaka Massaquoi.

In this eye-opening footage, the peaceful atmosphere is shattered by the deafening blasts of concussion grenades. It made me wonder, "Why hasn't this been shown?" It's the kind of reality check that sends shivers down your spine. The Jan. 6, 2021, narrative was that the Capitol had seemingly turned into a battlefield,

The appeals trial of a former Iranian regime prison official implicated in the 1988 massacre of political prisoners recently unfolded in Sweden as a consequential chapter in the ongoing struggle for accountability. The proceedings not only laid bare the gruesome events of that dark period but also underscored the protracted conflict between the main Iranian opposition and the Iranian regime. Kenneth Lewis, serving as the attorney for multiple plaintiffs in the trial, argued that the clash between the opposition and the Iranian regime should not be classified as an international armed conflict as claimed by the Iranian regime and its proponents.
