School voucher fallout leaves Texas Legislature
with no clear sense on next steps

Texas lawmakers are returning home for Thanksgiving as uncertainty looms over Gov. Greg Abbott’s yearlong push for school vouchers, which the House rejected Friday in its most direct vote on the issue yet. [SNIP] "Texas parents deserve the freedom to choose the education path that's best for their child to succeed,” Abbott spokesperson Renae Eze said in a statement for this story. “Governor Abbott has made it clear that he will do whatever it takes — however long it takes — to deliver that freedom for all Texas families through school choice.”

Comments:

The Republicans won't go along with the governor and are instead protecting the teachers' unions. What in the world is going on in Texas?

Maybe try a different approach from vouchers. Let each taxpayer use that portion of the property taxes for schools charged to be used for private schos;regardless of their number of children. The portion of taxes in apartments could be aportioned to the tenants for the same use. This would not push folks out of public schoos as much as vouchers would.

That would fix a lot of what's wrong with public schools. One of the worst things to ever happen in this country is a teacher's union.

The voucher proposal failed because of an unusual 'alliance'. Large district DimoTwit reps voted against because they side with public school teachers who even without unions think the same in Texas as elsewhere. But rural Republican representatives joined in killing vouchers. This doesn't clearly make sense because rural students will never see the threat against public schools by voucher-funded private ones. I do not see a way around their objections.

I love that the bill was presented, even if it had no chance. It gets them on record as voting against what their constituents want.

Rural Republicans (usually the same guys who voted to impeach the AG) are buying the "money for vouchers are coming from rural districts." Sadly, current formulas do adverseky affect small West Texas school dustricts, some with PK-12 enrollment under 100 kids in an area larger than many states. If the lege could find a way to fix that, i Believe some funding program could be found.

I see this as elite vs non-elite. The rich elite already go to elite private schools. If intercity kids got vouchers then they too could attend the same schools making them not so elite and probably lower the standards and safety. By law the schools would be forced to accept all sorts of students the rich wouldn't want their kids to associate with. Drugs, crime and violence will not be far behind.

Ireland's prime minister on Friday condemned anti-immigrant protesters who rampaged through central Dublin after three young children were stabbed, saying the rioters simply wanted to cause chaos, not protect the country's way of life. Police arrested 34 people overnight after up to 500 people looted shops, set fire to vehicles and threw rocks at crowd control officers equipped with helmets and shields. The violence began after rumors circulated that a foreign national was responsible for the attack outside a Dublin school on Thursday afternoon. Prime Minister Leo Varadkar said Ireland's capital had endured two attacks, one on innocent children and the other on "our society and the rule of law."

Hundreds of police officers searched the properties of Hamas members and followers in Germany on Thursday morning following a formal ban on any activity by or in support of the militant group. The German government implemented the ban on Nov. 2 and dissolved Samidoun, a group that was behind a celebration in Berlin of Hamas' Oct. 7 attack on Israel. Germany's domestic intelligence service estimates that Hamas has around 450 members in the country. Their activities range from expressions of sympathy and propaganda activities to financing and fundraising activities to strengthen the organization abroad.

Faliks claimed she heard "Itbah El Yahud" (Slaughter the Jews) chanted by "hundreds" at the school, with many students outright denying the slaughter of 1,200 Israelis. UnitedHealth Group is being sued for allegedly using an artificial intelligence algorithm to systematically deny elderly patients rehabilitative care. The class action lawsuit, filed Tuesday in Minnesota district court, says the defendants — UnitedHealth Group, UnitedHealthCare and NaviHealth — illegally used an AI model called nH Predict in place of medical professionals despite knowing it had a 90% error rate. This helped the group continuously deny Medicare Advantage Plan patients the care their doctors said was necessary, such as nursing facility stays, by "predicting" what a patient "should" require instead of what they actually do, the lawsuit states.

Venezuela is preparing to once again lop off zeroes from the national currency in an attempt to simplify daily transactions which sometimes barely fit on a calculator or require swiping cards multiple times to complete a purchase. The central bank is planning to slash six zeroes from the bolivar as early as August after previous attempts to issue larger-denomination bills failed to resolve problems created by endemic inflation. [SNIP] That means one dollar would fetch 3.2 bolivars instead of 3,219,000 at present. Venezuela last carried out a “redenomination” of the bolivar in 2018 and in March began printing a 1 million-bolivar note, the largest in the country’s history.

Like Longfellow’s little girl, who had a little curl right in the middle of her forehead, sometimes ad agencies are very good indeed, and sometimes they’re horrid. When they’re good, it’s worth taking note because, as with all media, those short videos have a disproportionate effect on the American psyche. In the case of Chevy’s holiday ad, that effect can only be good. When I grew up in the 1960s and 1970s, in the pre-streaming age, you watched ads whether or not you wanted to. These years were the heydays of jingles and slogans. Indeed, for us, jingles were a family tradition.
