Hundreds of police officers searched the properties of Hamas members and followers in Germany on Thursday morning following a formal ban on any activity by or in support of the militant group. The German government implemented the ban on Nov. 2 and dissolved Samidoun, a group that was behind a celebration in Berlin of Hamas' Oct. 7 attack on Israel. Germany's domestic intelligence service estimates that Hamas has around 450 members in the country. Their activities range from expressions of sympathy and propaganda activities to financing and fundraising activities to strengthen the organization abroad.

During WWI, my grandfather was in a local protective league in SE Connecticut. (I can't remember the official name of the group.) There were German immigrants in the area also. He was to stay on the lookout for German sympathizers, who was getting/receiving letters/packages from Germany, who has out-of-town guests who speak German, who speaks German etc.

Ireland's prime minister on Friday condemned anti-immigrant protesters who rampaged through central Dublin after three young children were stabbed, saying the rioters simply wanted to cause chaos, not protect the country's way of life. Police arrested 34 people overnight after up to 500 people looted shops, set fire to vehicles and threw rocks at crowd control officers equipped with helmets and shields. The violence began after rumors circulated that a foreign national was responsible for the attack outside a Dublin school on Thursday afternoon. Prime Minister Leo Varadkar said Ireland's capital had endured two attacks, one on innocent children and the other on "our society and the rule of law."

A Jewish professor at The University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) has spoken out against the school’s response to antisemitism on campus and claimed the administration has done little to make her feel safe. In a piece published in Jewish Journal, concert pianist and UCLA head of piano Inna Faliks detailed the harassment she and her husband faced in the weeks following the October 7 terrorist attacks orchestrated by Hamas. Faliks claimed she heard "Itbah El Yahud" (Slaughter the Jews) chanted by "hundreds" at the school, with many students outright denying the slaughter of 1,200 Israelis. "I met UCLA graduate students who had never heard of the Holocaust..."

UnitedHealth Group is being sued for allegedly using an artificial intelligence algorithm to systematically deny elderly patients rehabilitative care. The class action lawsuit, filed Tuesday in Minnesota district court, says the defendants — UnitedHealth Group, UnitedHealthCare and NaviHealth — illegally used an AI model called nH Predict in place of medical professionals despite knowing it had a 90% error rate. This helped the group continuously deny Medicare Advantage Plan patients the care their doctors said was necessary, such as nursing facility stays, by "predicting" what a patient "should" require instead of what they actually do, the lawsuit states.

Pop star Pink says she will be giving away 2,000 banned books at two of her South Florida concerts this week in order to draw attention to the recent wave of censorship laws that impact American schools and libraries. The musician announced she is teaming up with PEN America to combat what the nonprofit calls a "book-banning crisis across the country." That means fans who attend Pink's Miami and Sunrise, Florida, shows on Tuesday and Wednesday will be given a copy of some of the books that have appeared on PEN America's Index of Banned Books — many of which refer to things like sexuality, gender, race, religion and more.

Venezuela is preparing to once again lop off zeroes from the national currency in an attempt to simplify daily transactions which sometimes barely fit on a calculator or require swiping cards multiple times to complete a purchase. The central bank is planning to slash six zeroes from the bolivar as early as August after previous attempts to issue larger-denomination bills failed to resolve problems created by endemic inflation. [SNIP] That means one dollar would fetch 3.2 bolivars instead of 3,219,000 at present. Venezuela last carried out a “redenomination” of the bolivar in 2018 and in March began printing a 1 million-bolivar note, the largest in the country’s history.

Several women on the US soccer team on Monday turned away from the US flag as 98-year-old WWII veteran Pete DuPré played the national anthem on a harmonica. The US Women’s soccer team is playing against Mexico in East Hartford, Connecticut in a pre-Olympic sendoff game before heading to Japan. These women should not be allowed to represent the US at the Olympics. ESPN showed the women disrespecting the US flag and the veteran, but the USWNT was careful not to show the women up close.

Two years ago, my colleague Joe Cunningham wrote about the beautiful ad that Chevrolet did for Christmas with a man who is sad at the holidays because his wife has died. The daughter then lovingly has the wife's car -- which is under wraps in the barn, unused for a while -- restored, unbeknownst to the father, to surprise him and bring back those memories of the love of his wife he so misses. “It’s what mom would’ve wanted,” the daughter says. This time it comes from the National Transportation Safety Board and it involves outsiders having control of the gas pedal in your car. While you’re driving, of course. Pretty much everyone was either getting story prompts from Drudge or sending him stories (often via AOL Instant Messenger) hoping he'd link them. A Drudge link day was always a good one

When we say the word “Thanks-giving,” it presumes the giving of thanks. But to whom is that thanks given? Since the first Thanksgiving on Plymouth Rock and its subsequent establishment as a day of thanks on Oct. 3, 1789, the recipient of that thanks on behalf of the United States of America has always been God. But in keeping with the destruction of everything good and virtuous in this nation, this year, God has been removed as the recipient of thanks on Thanksgiving. On Wednesday, President Biden released his Thanksgiving proclamation for 2023. For the first time in American history, the proclamation completely omitted any reference to God or faith.
