Cornell University trustees approved a request from faculty to change the “Department of English” to the “Department of Literatures in English” in the interest of fighting racism.
As Campus Reform reported in November, English Department faculty members voted to change the school’s name during their first faculty meeting of the fall semester. Professor Kate McCullough said that the rebranding would help to avoid the “conflation of English as a language and English as a nationality.” (snip) Cornell University spokeswoman Abby Butler directed Campus Reform toward a statement saying that the name change is part of “decolonization efforts” inspired by universities around the world.

I've been on the edge of my seat, tossing and turning trying to get to sleep, sweating and bighting my fingernails for the last 6 months worrying about this change from “Department of English” to the “Department of Literatures in English”. I was sure it wasn't going to pass but, Thank Goodness!, level heads prevailed.

Mao's Red Guard in action. Will the professors that do not follow the Cornell Red Book be ousted, just like in the ChiCom Great Movement Forward? Will they be sent to the Collegiate Gulags, to work their time off, tending the fields? Sure sounds like it. Will the new names make the students any more literate or more woke? What's your guess? Mine is nope, nada, no way Jose. Millions died in China and the USSR and NK in movements like the one occurring at Cornell. The irony of Cornell's action is very rusty to say the least.

Good to see this university department concentrating their efforts on a really important question rather than wasting their time teaching the great works written in English! Or even worse, teaching students to write. My own university teaches many "remedial" sections in the vain attempt to do that, but the teachers are warned by the administration not to grade the students' grammar or spelling!

Good Lord, abject stupidity has overcome Cornell and other leading universities around the world. Once they led the way to knowledge. Now they lead the march away from it..

First, the came for the language. If they can own your vocabulary, they can own you and make you like a toy clown on a stick. (Thanks, #1. Glad your angst has begun to subside.)

Global economic and political structures, globalism,
is collapsing around their ears.
Colonialism is coming back in a big way,
whether Cornell University trustees
driving their earth killing, child slave labor based, EVs
like it or not.
They won't call it that. They will find a pleasant euphemism
that lets them sleep in their comfy sinecures.
But, that's exactly what it will be.
People have an amazing capacity to delude themselves...

The company my husband worked for had an arrangement with Cornell to give engineering students an internship. Hubby said they were like robots - no critical thinking skills, no imagination.

Why is it that the more formal education some people receive the more muddled, confused and broken their thinking process becomes? America's silliest ideas always seem to originate in academia.

"Literatures"?? My favorite teacher, Sister Mary Harry, at Our Lady of Perpetual Hurt would have rapped some knuckles with her blue steel ruler for that one.

Have you ever taken a college-level English Lit class? It's right up there with gender studies.
And what about the Language Department? How are they going to indicate that "Spanish" and whatever language that is that they speak in Mexico? Or that Austrians speak German?

Please tell me how many different English language "Literatures" are there exactly?(even spelchek highlights it as wrong)
Was this decision made in the "Department of Departments Naming Department, Office of Offices Naming Bureau"?? In cooperation with the sign making/painting/printing dept...where they get paid by the word to make these changes?
Was it made by the Deputy assistant to the assistant deputy of deputy assistants aide to the deputy assistant aide's...intern? Or by someone "Higher Up"?

If this is part of their "Decolonization efforts" they should have the native language(s) and writing be the ONLY ones allowed on Campus. Nor should they allow "Colonizers dress/clothing" to be worn there, no colonizer foods or products, no bricks, cement, iron/steel...including electricity,.
"Our Ithaca campus is located on the traditional homelands of the Gayogo̱hó:nǫɁ, members of the Hodinǫ̱hsǫ́:nih (Haudenosaunee) Confederacy." (and yes, that ? mark IS part of the language, not actually asking a question, but rather marking an inflection...like an up talking valley gyrrl).

Cut off ALL their taxpayer funding (federal, state, local). After all, the taxpayers are colonialists, so they wouldn't want to touch such tainted money, now would they?
