JOHANNESBURG — A nighttime fire ripped through a rundown apartment building mainly occupied by homeless people and squatters in Johannesburg, forcing some to throw babies out of third-story windows in a desperate attempt to save them and leaving at least 73 people dead early Thursday, witnesses and emergency services in South Africa’s biggest city said. At least seven of the victims were children, the youngest a 1-year-old, according to an emergency services spokesperson. A South African television station reported that the number had climbed to 12 children dead, although emergency services didn’t immediately confirm that. Opposition to Rep. Kevin McCarthy becoming House Majority Leader was palpable on the right at the beginning of 2023. During a drawn-out fight, Rep. Chip Roy and other conservatives held up his promotion to secure a new rules package and guarantees surrounding investigations.
Eventually, McCarthy secured the votes after making several concessions, and at that point, it was fair to wipe the slate clean. He deserved a chance to prove himself, and for the most part, he's been a fairly good leader who has kept his promises regarding investigations into the weaponization of government and the Biden family's corruption.

The U.S. Border Patrol arrested 91,000 migrants who crossed as part of a family group in August, breaking the previous one-month record of 84,486 that was set in May 2019.

McAfee will also allow reporters to use their computers and cell phones inside the courtroom so long as they are not used to record the trial. McAfee’s announcement is aligned with Fulton County policy that broadcasts judicial proceedings on its YouTube channel.

Judge Timothy Kelly sentenced Marine Corps veteran Zachary Rehl to 15 years to life in prison for being in the wrong place at the wrong time — walking through the Capitol building for approximately 20 minutes during the Capitol riot on January 6.
The government sought 33 years life in federal prison for Rehl, the head of the Philadelphia chapter of the Proud Boys, for “his role in the Capitol riot.”
Rehl committed no violent crimes on January 6. He walked through the Capitol building on January 6 for merely a few minutes, took a selfie in the building then left the Capitol grounds.

President Joe Biden defended Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) following his freeze at a Kentucky press gaggle on Wednesday and said he expects McConnell “to get back to his old self.”
