What is the Barbie movie trying to say? (Update)

I haven’t seen the Barbie movie but I’ve read several reviews coming from different perspectives which make me think I may need to rent it eventually. My expectation for this were about as low as they could be and the reviews I’ve seen from conservatives have suggested it lives up to those expectations. But even the conservative critics seem to have been surprised by just how ambitious this film is. It’s clearly trying to say something though there’s disagreement over exactly what the message is. I've seen the YT critiques from Drinker, Shapiro, and Oden, but I've heard from women, culturally and politically (to apolitical) aligned with those reviewers, who found the movie to be layered, complex, smart, and silly. It was not what they were expecting. Boring and lame for 8 year old girls (too long, and the PG13 language goes right over their heads) but older members of those weekend family groups were not put off by the film. That kind of disparity is a sign of success, not failure.

People will read into the movie whatever they want. Sometimes, a movie is just a movie and people go to see it for mindless entertainment. Barbie certainly would qualify as mindless entertainment. .

If the movie has an existential message Barbie dolls are ridiculous vehicles. The message I get is “we’ve run out of ideas so…..girl power!” + “even woke chics like the androgynous Ryan Gosling” + “We’re Hollywood. We’re untalented hacks. What did you expect? Entertainment for its own sake?”.

Don't care. My view is that any movie that needs an advertising budget the size of the budget that this movie has can't be worth watching. If a movie is any good, word of mouth will sell it. The latest example of that is the movie about child trafficking. The Barbie movie may make a profit simply because people will be curious about it after all the advertising. I'll bet it gets several Oscar nods next year simply based on the sets and wardrobe.

Hubby and I went to see Sound of Freedom last Saturday and saw previews of the Barbie movie. My only thought at the time was “obnoxious”. I played with Barbies and believe that I had the very first version as I was seven years old when it debuted. My daughter also had a few Barbie’s but she didn’t play with them in the traditional sense - she cut off their hair, scribbled all over them with Magic Markers and removed their heads and limbs. Not sure what that means but she is now a conservative mom with 3 kids and another due any day now.

Carlos De Oliveira, Mar-a-Lago's head of maintenance, has been named as the third defendant alongside the former president and his valet Walt Nauta. In addition, prosecutors are piling more charges on former President Donald Trump. They are additional charges related to obstruction of justice and willful retention of national defense information. Special Counsel Jack Smith's team added them to the existing indictment Thursday evening.

A series of internal Facebook emails obtained by the House Judiciary Committee confirm that the Biden White House placed significant pressure on the company to crack down on “misinformation” related to the Covid pandemic in early 2021. The emails, released publicly by committee chairman Jim Jordan on Thursday, suggest that in some cases Facebook and Instagram complied with the White House’s content-moderation requests in order to avoid public and private backlash. One April 2021 email sent by a Facebook employee on behalf of Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg and COO Sheryl Sandberg acknowledged that, “We are facing continued pressure from external stakeholders, including the [Biden] White House.”

Lawyers for Donald Trump were told Thursday by prosecutors to expect an indictment against the former president in connection with his efforts to reverse his loss in the 2020 election, NBC News reported. Trump's lawyers Todd Blanche and John Lauro met Thursday morning in Washington, D.C., with prosecutors for Department of Justice special counsel Jack Smith and were informed of the planned indictment, according to NBC. At around the same time, the grand jury that could soon vote on criminally charging Trump assembled in Washington federal court. Multiple members of that panel were seen entering the E. Barrett Prettyman Courthouse at around 8:30 a.m. ET, NBC reported.

Hunter Biden could face new federal charges related to his failure to register as a foreign agent while he was cutting lucrative deals with Ukraine, China and other countries where his politically powerful father held sway. Prosecutors Wednesday said there is an ongoing probe of President Biden’s son that potentially includes offenses related to the Foreign Agent Registration Act, or FARA. Prosecutors made the statement during a federal court proceeding where Hunter Biden was slated to plead guilty to two misdemeanor tax charges and agree to a deal to spare him a felony gun charge.

It is a small study, but a very disturbing one. We keep being told that injury to the heart from the COVID vaccine is very rare, but a study done in Basel Switzerland indicates that the rate of subclinical myocarditis after the COVID vaccine is hardly rare at all. In fact, in a study with only 777 participants with a median age of 37--all medical professionals getting the COVID vaccine–the incidence of elevated cardiac enzymes 3 days after injection was pretty substantial, at almost 3%. The CDC did a study and from that, they claimed the rate was 0.001%, or one out of 100,000. 2.8% is a lot higher than 0.001%. Another 0.3%

On Wednesday, Hunter Biden appeared in federal court in Delaware to plead guilty to two misdemeanors for failing to pay millions in federal taxes and to accept a pre-trial diversion agreement on a gun charge, all in exchange for two years probation with no jail time. The sweetheart plea deal that was widely panned by experts fell apart in court and was ultimately rejected by the judge, forcing Hunter Biden to plead “not guilty.” Suddenly, the president’s son’s “Get Out of Jail Free” card was gone, and the Democrats’ hopes of putting the Hunter Biden saga behind them were dashed. This is certainly going to be a huge problem for Democrats

The central bank concluded a two-day policy meeting on Wednesday by announcing that it is raising the federal funds rate by a quarter of a percentage point, lifting the Fed's target rate to between 5.25% and 5.5%. The Fed left the door open to further rate hikes this year, with Chair Jerome Powell telling reporters in a news conference that additional tightening is possible unless inflation continues to cool rapidly. Hunter Biden pleaded not guilty to misdemeanor tax charges in a federal courtroom in Delaware Wednesday after U.S. District Court Judge Maryellen Noreika put a plea deal his lawyers had reached with prosecutors on hold. In June, Biden was charged with felony gun possession and two misdemeanor counts of failing to pay taxes in 2017 and 2018. The original deal included a recommendation of probation for the tax violations, while the gun charge for illegally owning a Colt Cobra .38 Special handgun would be dropped and potentially wiped from Biden’s record if he met certain conditions laid out in court. The late-night Tuesday filing from Giuliani says he doesn’t contest Moss and Freeman’s accusations that he smeared them after the 2020 election. Yet the filing says he still wants to be able to argue that his statements about voter fraud in Georgia in the 2020 election were protected speech. Notably, he also refuses to concede that his statements caused damages to Moss or Freeman. CNN has reached out to a lawyer for Freeman and Moss.

The Biden administration was dealt a major blow in its efforts to control the ongoing border crisis on Tuesday when a federal judge blocked a rule introduced in May that makes migrants ineligible for asylum if they have entered illegally and failed to take advantage of expanded lawful pathways set up by the federal government.
