The race is on to prevent the sinking of a cargo ship off the Dutch coast which is carrying almost 3,000 vehicles, including 350 Mercedes-Benz, as it burns out of control with an electric car believed to be behind the deadly fire. At least one crew member died and others were injured after fire ripped through the Fremantle Highway, a 18,500-ton car-carrying vessel. Rescue helicopters and boats evacuated 23 crew members from the Panamanian-registered ship. Officials have said there are 'many' wounded. Some suffered broken bones, burns and breathing problems and were taken to hospitals in the northern Netherlands

The irony. Think about the pollution spewing into the atmosphere. Who would want one of these ticking time bombs near their homes? We saw one parked in a neighbor’s attached garage the other day and I thought to myself, no way I would park an EV in my garage or even near my home.
Please someone do a documentary regarding how the components for these batteries are acquired. Children are literally digging the materials out of the earth with their hands. Follow the process all the way to the conclusion of how you deal with the waste. These vehicles are not what they claim to be. This is pure folly done to virtue signal and put money into the right pockets. It is dreadful what they are trying to sell us. Anyone with a lick of common sense knows the world is not ready for this on so many levels and yet, they persist. Truly, these people are insane.

Sorry about the death and casualties. Not sorry to see a bunch of expensive German EVs go permanently to Davy Jones Locker.

Race to salvage the ship? How about a race to salvage us from these brain dead, environmentalist scam artists who will destroy all of us for a non existent problem. Ain’t those electric cars great?

It is highly likely they will not be able to put this fire out. Another example of the dangers posed by electric cars. This will turn into an environmental disaster. The ship will ultimately sink dumping tons of toxic waste.

A little over a year ago the same thing happened to another ship carrying cars, and it sank while being towed back to port. The culprit was determined to be a Volkswagen electric vehicle which caught on fire. The crew and fire suppression system on the ship failed to extinguish the fire, and the crew abandoned ship. Navy vessels from Portugal came to help, but they made the decided to just tow the burning ship back to port to try and save the ship. It didn't make it, and the ship sank. On board were high end Porsches, the last of run of a certain model of Lamborghinis, Audi's, and of course Volkswagens. Many of the Porsches were special order cars that cost over 500K. The Lambo's could never be reordered. That shipment was it for that type of vehicle, and each vehicle was at least 500k and worth a lot more than that. The Volkswagen that caught fire, cost about 40k.

Fire on a ship is the last place you want to be. Lithium fire on a ship is the VERY last place. Welcome to Hell.

Electric cars, endorsed by arsonists everywhere. When do the homeowners insurance companies drop you coverage if you own an electric car? Look at what insurance companies are doing to people in FL and other places threatened by hurricanes. All our policies have been dropped at the next renewal. We are scrambling to find coverage. Better chance of your house burning down from an electric car than getting hit by a hurricane.

It's not a cargo ship, it's a car carrier vessel which only ships vehicles.
This will end up General Average, and will be a long drawn out insurance issue.
Wondering what type of emissions come from a burning EV vehicle?

The real tragedy is losing 1,117 Porsches and 85 Lamgorghinis because one electric toy car decided to self-combust. The losses here will total up to many millions of dollars. The ship barely got out of port.

Once again - - I've come up with the simple solution which all of the "experts" have missed. - - - -
Just make it mandatory for all electric cars to be equipped with gasoline-powered fire extinguishers.
There - - that solves the problem - - and I'm the one who thought of it!

I sorta want an e bike, but they can cause fires too. Would not park a 79k electric vehicle in an attached garage for anything!

I had a neighbor who was given a company-provided Tesla. He never parked it in his garage, later telling me he knew someone whose electric car caught fire in the garage and did serious damage to the house.
Once insurance companies refuse to insure cargos with electric cars (or charge exorbitant premiums for coverage), the solution will be to either (1) ship electrics without batteries and install the batteries once they reach their intended destination, or (2) build electrics in the same country where they will be sold. Whatever the solution, the cost will make electrics more costly and uneconomical than they are now. It will also raise the cost of all imports, not just electrics.

Only one of the 25 electric cars out of nearly 3000 cars onboard caught fire. Once those lithium batteries ignite no amount of water will put them out. A night picture shows the ship glowing orange hot. The crew were jumping off the deck - about 10 stories up. Salvage the ship? What's to salvage?

The Impact on International Shipping Insurance is going to be huge. I would expect some shipping lines to begin excluding electric cars.

The insurance coverage that comes into play here is called ocean marine or ocean cargo. This will be one heck of a claim and I wouldn't be surprised to see some companies withdrawing from the market or refusing coverage if EVs are aboard. This could play merry hell with shipping costs for imported EVs.

For insurance purposes, car container ships should be reclassified as hazard waste container ships if one EV is on board.

I can see these vehicles being classified as "top deck only," with a bulldozer nearby to pitch them into the ocean if one catches fire.
Last week, a lady in Noccatee, Fl had her ICE car in the shop for some maintenance. The dealership gave her an EV as a loaner. It was parked in her garage, not even charging, just sitting there. Her husband heard some strange crackling noises, went to check the garage and the EV was in flames. He escaped but the house did not. The EV fire caused more than $1m of damage and the house is likely a teardown because of it.
She told the local news that she will NEVER own an EV because of this.
