WASHINGTON — A Pennsylvania mother who was known as "Bullhorn Lady" because she used a bullhorn to instruct rioters at the U.S. Capitol was convicted Tuesday of nine federal counts.
Rachel Powell was found guilty on a variety of charges, including felony counts of interfering with officers performing their duties and obstruction of an official proceeding. Her bench trial was held in May, and U.S. District Judge Royce Lamberth delivered the verdict Tuesday. Powell was accompanied to court by her children, one of whom was wearing a red "MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN" hat in the courtroom. Powell had posted on social media that former President Donald Trump

NEW YORK -- There are new developments in New York City's struggle to house recently arrived asylum seekers.
Mayor Eric Adams said Wednesday the city has been carrying the weight of the nation's crisis and now there is no longer space for new people coming in, citing the absence of state or federal aid.
He said he has put a plan in place that will begin in the next couple of days to help move current migrants out of shelters to make space for families arriving with children. With an average of 300 to 500 people still arriving daily, the mayor said the city will begin providing 60-day

At least two people have died and several others were injured after shooting erupted inside a building in central Auckland, New Zealand police said Thursday.
The shooting is “an isolated incident,” and “not a national security risk,” New Zealand police said on Twitter, adding that multiple injuries were reported and “and at this stage we can confirm two people have died.”
“The male offender is also deceased,” police added. A man, covered in blood, was captured by CNN affiliate Newshub being carried from the scene by police. He was treated on site by an ambulance after gunshots were heard coming from the scene, it reported.

A federal judge on Wednesday denied former President Donald Trump’s bid to move his hush-money payments case from New York state court to a federal venue.
The ruling from U.S. District Court Judge Alvin Hellerstein means the case will stay in Manhattan criminal court, where District Attorney Alvin Bragg's office is prosecuting Trump on 34 felony counts of falsifying business records. Trump, who has pleaded not guilty, argued that the payments were connected to his duties as president and that the case should therefore be heard in federal court. Hellerstein rejected that argument.
"Trump has failed to show that the conduct charged by the Indictment is for or relating

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has suspended the Wuhan Institute of Virology’s eligibility to receive federal funding after the lab failed to turn in requested documents about safety and security measures.
HHS issued a memo on Monday notifying the lab of its decision and warning that it is also seeking to permanently blacklist the lab from receiving future taxpayer funds. The lab hasn’t received funds from the National Institutes of Health since July 2020.
The lab can challenge the suspension and proposed debarment.
The move comes after the agency found in a review that began last September that the facility was not compliant

Disgraced Disney CEO Bob Iger “put roughly a third of the company up for sale this week,” Bloomberg Business reports.
According to the report, the sale announcement was a subtle but unmistakable one. Iger made the announcement during his disastrous CNBC interview last week, where he was caught lying with the false claim that Disney is not sexualizing children.
By declaring its cable and broadcast TV assets “noncore,” the report says, Iger told the world ABC TV, the FX cable networks, National Geographic, and Freeform are all for sale. He’s also looking for a partner for the failing ESPN.

GOP presidential candidate and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis became the first 2024 contender to enter the South Carolina primary Tuesday and defended rival and Republican front-runner former President Donald Trump during a campaign stop in the Palmetto State.
Flanked by supporters, including state legislators who have endorsed his bid, DeSantis signed his filing documents during a stop at the South Carolina Republican Party headquarters in Columbia, making him the first major party presidential candidate officially on the ballot for the first-in-the-South contest.
During a press conference afterward at the Celebrate Freedom Foundation, a nonprofit founded by retired military leaders, DeSantis was asked by a reporter about breaking news

Michigan attorney general Dana Nessel (D.) announced Tuesday she had filed criminal charges against 16 people who signed paperwork falsely claiming that Donald Trump won the 2020 election.
It is the first time a state attorney general has charged so-called “false electors” who participated in a scheme to overturn President Biden’s victory. Biden carried the Wolverine State by over 100,000 votes.
The 16 people charged include high-profile Michigan Republicans like Meshawn Maddock, co-chair of the Michigan Republican Party, and Kathy Berden, a national committeewoman from Michigan for the RNC.
The 16 people allegedly met in the basement of the state’s Republican Party headquarters. They signed multiple certificates claiming they were “the duly elected

Barack Obama released a rare public letter denouncing the “profoundly misguided” attempts to ban books in libraries across the country.
“Today, some of the books that shaped my life – and the lives of so many others – are being challenged by people who disagree with certain ideas or perspectives. It’s no coincidence that these ‘banned books’ are often written by or feature people of color, indigenous people, and members of the LGBTQ+ community,” the former president wrote.
Obama’s comments come amid a wave of parent concern over the addition of highly sexualized content to public-school libraries.
Much of the concern has focused on the book Gender Queer

Former Biden administration nuclear official Sam Brinton was on a taxpayer-funded government business trip when he was caught trying to steal airport luggage, according to newly revealed Department of Energy documents.
Brinton, who identifies as “non-binary” and dresses in woman’s clothes, traveled in early July 2022 to the DOE’s Nevada national security site outside Las Vegas as part of his role as deputy assistant secretary for spent fuel and waste disposition at the office of nuclear energy, according to internal documents obtained by watchdog group Functional Government Initiative (FGI) and first reported by Fox News.

A federal judge in Oregon ruled on Friday that a new state gun law does not violate the US Constitution, keeping one of the toughest gun laws in the country in place.
US District Court Judge Karin Immergut ruled that Ballot Measure 114’s restrictions on large-capacity magazines that hold more than 10 rounds are constitutional because these magazines are “not commonly used for self-defense, and are therefore not protected by the Second Amendment.”
“Even if LCMs are protected by the Second Amendment, BM 114’s restrictions are consistent with this Nation’s history and tradition of regulating uniquely dangerous features of weapons and firearms to protect public safety,” the ruling said.
