The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has suspended the Wuhan Institute of Virology’s eligibility to receive federal funding after the lab failed to turn in requested documents about safety and security measures. HHS issued a memo on Monday notifying the lab of its decision and warning that it is also seeking to permanently blacklist the lab from receiving future taxpayer funds. The lab hasn’t received funds from the National Institutes of Health since July 2020. The lab can challenge the suspension and proposed debarment. The move comes after the agency found in a review that began last September that the facility was not compliant

Texas officials have seized more than 422 million lethal doses of fentanyl since the launch of the state’s Operation Lone Star program in March 2021, governor Greg Abbott announced on Friday.
“Operation Lone Star continues to fill the dangerous gaps created by the Biden Administration’s refusal to secure the border,” Abbott’s office said. “Every individual who is apprehended or arrested and every ounce of drugs seized would have otherwise made their way into communities across Texas and the nation due to President Joe Biden’s open border policies.”
Abbott said in a statement that the program has also led to 394,200 illegal-immigrant apprehensions and 31,300 criminal arrests.
Donald Trump’s favorability among Republican and Republican-leaning voters has fallen from 75 percent in July 2022 to 66 percent in July 2023, according to a new Pew poll.
Conversely, while only 24 percent of Republican voters surveyed thought of Trump unfavorably in July 2022, that is now up to 32 percent in the latest poll.
Among the broader voting public, the former president’s unfavorability has remained largely stable. Whereas 60 percent of Americans did not hold a strong opinion of him in July 2022, today, that is only 63 percent following his legal woes.

Washington — Justice Department special counsel Jack Smith’s team has contacted Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp, whom former President Donald Trump pressured to overturn the 2020 election, a Kemp official told CNN.
“I can confirm our office has been contacted by Jack Smith’s office, but we will decline to comment further at this time,” Andrew Isenhour, a spokesman for the Republican governor, said in a statement.
Smith’s team contacted Kemp’s office this week, according to a person familiar with the outreach.
The Washington Post was first to report Smith’s reach-out to Kemp.

A federal judge in Florida scheduled Donald Trump's trial in the classified documents case to begin May 20 − amid the presidential campaign − splitting the difference between prosecutors, who wanted to start in December, and the former president's lawyers, who sought to postpone until after the 2024 election. Ziegler, a registered Democrat who has over a decade of experience as an IRS case agent, laid out the corruption he saw involving the Hunter Biden investigation. The City of New York agreed to pay a $13.7 million settlement in a class-action lawsuit brought by protesters who accused NYPD officers of using unlawful policing tactics and violating the rights of demonstrators during the 2020 protests and rioting sparked by the death of George Floyd.
