Chinese spy balloon used American-made
parts, did not transmit data: Officials

Original Article

The Chinese spy balloon that was shot down over the Atlantic Ocean in early February was built -- at least partly -- using American off-the-shelf parts, a U.S. official has confirmed to ABC News. A second U.S. official was also able to confirm that the balloon did not appear to have transmitted any of the data it collected on its journey above North America, as was initially reported by the Wall Street Journal. The first official could not say whether any of the American gear was sold illicitly to China but said determining whether any of it came from illegal trade was a topic of serious concern

What was the point of (any) data collection if there was no transmission? How would any data be recovered? A data dump at a later time? How did the Chicoms track the thing to "guide" it?

First of all, it depends on what the definition of "parts" is. Could be anything. Secondly - and very sadly - there is no longer any credibility in what "a U.S. official" says or confirms. Comer says the haul is now up to $50 million? Much of which came from China? When U.S. officials start confirming that I'll maybe start listening.

Didn't they say, while the balloon was still in the air, that they had "learned a lot about Chinese intelligence methods and technology" from monitoring the balloon? How could they have done that, other than monitor the balloon equipment's transmissions? "The officials told lawmakers that the US has assessed that little new intelligence was gleaned by the Chinese balloon operation because the Chinese appeared to stop transmitting information once the US learned of the balloon," link: https://www.cnn.com/2023/02/09/politics/spy-balloon-technology/index.html "American Equipment" could be anything from a sophisticated remote sensor, to a transmitter, down to a battery, or something as simple as a single piece of nut-and-bolt hardware. A federal judge on Tuesday blocked key Biden administration agencies and officials from meeting and communicating with Big Tech companies, in an extraordinary ruling that could change the way social media is used. It also could curtail efforts to combat false and misleading narratives as Americans prepare for the 2024 presidential election. The injunction is in response to a lawsuit brought by Republican attorneys general in Louisiana and Missouri. The states argued that government officials went too far in their efforts to encourage social media companies to address posts they worried could contribute to COVID vaccine hesitancy or upend elections.

As the left went into full freak-out most last week denouncing the Supreme Court for ending affirmative action, I argued that they were really overstating their case. One of the points I made in passing was that most colleges aren’t competitive. Today a pair of academics have written an opinion piece for the NY Times highlighting this even further. We’ll get to the text of the argument in a moment but the article itself opens with a graphic highlighting all of America’s major four-year colleges ranked by admittance rate. So, for instance, Harvard and Stanford have the lowest admittance rate in the country of just 4 percent.

Military officials expect the roughly 2,000 troops to remain in the West Bank city of Jenin for up to 48 hours after launching the operation. Palestinian officials say at least eight people were killed and 50 were wounded in the attack, which was larger than any operation Israel has carried out this year. A United States Secret Service spokesperson confirmed the event, saying: U.S. Secret Service Uniform Division Officers located an unknown item on the White House complex. As a precaution, the White House grounds were evacuated, and the DC Fire Departments Hazmat team responded. A hazmat team responded to the area of 18th St and Pennsylvania Ave, and the Secret Service blocked roadways around the White House. All roads have re-opened since, according to the spokesperson. Sec. State Blinken ordered this review of the department’s response to the Afghanistan withdrawal. The result is critical of both President Trump and President Biden saying they failed to plan appropriately for the withdrawal. The report is sharply critical of the U.S. government’s handling of the most serious evacuation crisis since the fall of Saigon. It says President Biden and his predecessor, Donald Trump, each failed to appreciate how a U.S. military pullout would affect the Afghan government’s stability, and that standard summer diplomatic rotations in the weeks ahead of Kabul’s collapse left the U.S. evacuation in the hands of personnel who in some cases had been in the country
