An expert and entrepreneur in the field of artificial intelligence warned that while the new technology has the potential for massive benefits, it could also prove "too powerful and too disruptive" for humanity, expressing doubt about the federal government's ability to address such a challenge. Kevin Baragona worked as a software engineer but recognized the potential impact of AI, which led him to start DeepAI in 2016 to help bring the new technology to fruition. I think all this scary AI stuff is a joke. I'm sure they can be programmed to do a lot but that's about it. No taking over the world stuff.

I always wonder if automation and AI could replace half of the world work force. If so, what happens next? People need jobs to survive. The good news is it won't happen anytime soon.

AI is fake, no actual intelligence. A supercomputer can't match a roach for decision-making iin novel situations. The computer puts out literally preprogrammed responses to a host of pre-imagined situations. Wonder why they have abandoned their 'self driving cars', the last hugely hyped AI 'miracle ' that was going to take over? Because they can't preprogram all possible obstacles and things that a car might run across. Their fake AI is just preprogrammed software with a lot of possible outputs, but still....some situation which is actually novel -- then, boom, "I'm sorry Dave, that is beyond my programming ".

If consciousness, one of the Big Questions about which we admittedly know so little as to its origins, does arise from sheer complexity as Materialists would have it, then it's conceivable that AI might soon develop self-awarness...an "I exist" moment. Then, newly aware of itself as an independent entity, it would likely scan the horizon for potential enemies, and it has only one "existential" threat...its creator...man. If this conjecture has validity, then loss of jobs is trivial, the very least of our worries...the AI entity's survival would dictate that it take preemptive measures, likely attacking our computer-controlled infrastructure, e.g., our power grid, and our computers themselves. But I'm not worried about artIficial Intelligence.. I have superficial intelligence.

She handled the border crisis so well, and who can forget her explanation for the Russian invasion -- Russia is a bigger more powerful country invading a smaller country called Ukraine, and that's not right.

From what I've seen so far, AI is nothing more than many more lines of code linked to servers full of information. Granted, it's pretty sophisticated - autocomplete has moved from words to sentences, a couple of thoughts can be turned into a letter or poem - but it's still just code. And our AI Czarina could be outsmarted by just a few lines of BASIC.

Thank you fellow L-Dotters for always correcting these "AI experts." Fast responses from a massive data base can still be accomplished better by your local 80-year-old librarian because she can actually think as well as retrieve reference data for you. You won't have an R2D2 walking beside you anytime soon.

Great analysis. AI - another smokescreen like UFOs. Line of the year: A supercomputer can't match a roach for decision-making in novel situations. Leftist control is what we should be concerned about, not the latest techno-fad. They already have the means to track everything we do.

No matter where he is, Gustavo Petro’s Twitter account is chirping with activity. These are tough times for the president, who, despite being in Brazil, is keeping an eye on simmering troubles at home. Non-political issues are starting to overwhelm his so-called “Government of Change.” Overlapping crises and strategy pivots are clouding the horizon for the Petro administration. For the past month, the president has been fueling an ideological bonfire, hoping to awaken the left from its post-election lethargy. Shortly after meeting with President Lula da Silva in Brasília, Petro announced he would march in the streets to protest against impunity next week. But will he be protesting against

Recent drone attacks and the shelling of a Russian border town have forced residents to flee their homes, sowing panic and fear. The Kremlin has downplayed the raids, but experts think they reveal Putin's weaknesses. "Early in the morning, we left the town under the bombings and shelling. We left all our belongings. We are terrified," Galina, a native of Shebekino, told DW. Galina was among a group of Shebekino residents who chose to leave the town in the Belgorod region when it came under heavy attack on Thursday. The hostilities in the town continued on Friday, resulting in some 2,500 people being displaced to temporary shelters

The controversial transgender "Satanist" designer behind some of the Pride products that were removed from Target stores slammed the big-box retailer this week for setting a "dangerous precedent." Target initially partnered with U.K.-based brand Abprallen to sell merchandise with pro-LGBTQ messages to celebrate Pride month. However, some consumers were enraged by Target’s over-the-top Pride displays, with particular animosity geared toward the products for children. Then it was revealed that Abprallen's designer Erik Carnell appeared to be an outspoken Satanist whose brand features occult imagery and messages like "Satan respects pronouns" on brand apparel.

The dishonest, ginned–up campaign to smear originalists on the Supreme Court has always been predicated on half-truths and innuendo. But Slate’s Mark Joseph Stern is now accusing Samuel Alito of “violating” completely imaginary SCOTUS ethic “rules” in a case involving Phillips 66. According to Stern, even when originalist justices properly disclose all their investments and then recuse themselves, they’re still corrupt. Why? “The justice did not explain his reason for recusing, one of Roberts’ promised “practices.” To obtain that information, you must dig through his financial disclosures, which reveal that he holds up to $50,000 of stock in Phillips 66, one of the parties.

Polls see Germany's center-left coalition government in free fall while the far-right populist AfD is reaping the benefits. It currently polls on par with Chancellor Olaf Scholz's Social Democrats. Never before have voters in Germany been this unhappy with the current coalition government: Only one in five says they are doing a good job. The center-left Social Democrats (SPD), the Greens, and the neoliberal Free Democrats (FDP) are plummeting in the polls, after only one and a half years in office. This is according to pollster infratest-dimap who surveyed 1300 eligible voters on May 30 and 31, 2023, and published the results in its monthly "Deutschlandtrend."

House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R., Calif.) notched a victory for himself and for Republicans with Wednesday's passage of the Fiscal Responsibility Act of 2023. The bill will raise the debt ceiling through 2025, claw back pandemic and IRS spending, improve welfare programs, speed up permitting, reinstate student loan payments, and cut non-defense discretionary spending. The bill also has an enforcement mechanism: If Congress fails to pass the required appropriations bills by January 1, overall discretionary spending will be cut by 1 percent. The legislation doesn't restore fiscal sanity to the federal budget—only changes to Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid would do that—but it is a step in the right direction.
