House Speaker Kevin McCarthy helped secure a debt limit deal – now he has to secure its passage in the House, with little room for error and a looming threat to his speakership. In a win for McCarthy, the bill cleared a key hurdle Tuesday evening when the powerful House Rules Committee voted 7-6 to advance the debt ceiling bill to the floor. The bill will come to floor Wednesday for debate and a final passage vote before it goes to the Senate. The Rules Committee vote had been highly anticipated due to the fact that some of the loudest conservative critics of the bill are members of the panel.

One drone exploded into a mushroom cloud near the village of Usovo, which is just down the road from Putin's official Novo-Ogaryovo residence outside of the capital. '[Putin's residence] would be in earshot of the explosion,' one local said. In the city, explosive drones struck blocks of flats in Leninsky Prospekt and Profsoyuznaya Street about six miles from the centre of Moscow, reportedly wounding

The Brits are big on gardens and the beauty of their creations attests to it. Which is why climate protestors were in for a surprise when, at London's famous annual Chelsea Flower Show, three of them who jumped into a fancy garden display and began hurling orange powder all over it, got sprayed down with a garden hose by one of the locals. (snip) It was an appropriate response to a nuisance group that was attempting to destroy the thousands of hours of hard work that went into creating that world-class garden space, and must have been gratifying to the gardener/artist who created it.

The debt ceiling deal reached by the Republican leadership and the administration is far from perfect in the eyes of anyone who cares about runaway government spending (which is the only government spending we know of). But it appears House Speaker Kevin McCarthy was able to block, at least for a year, the hiring of a field army of IRS soldiers. Like a thousand lawyers at the bottom of the ocean, it’s a good start, though there’s still a long way to go. Among the hundreds of sections in the 99-page bill, No. 251 is “Rescission of certain balances made available to the Internal Revenue Service.” More specifically, the legislation,

After several failed attempts to delay her time behind bars, Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes is set to report to federal prison this week. The disgraced entrepreneur was sentenced to over 11 years in prison and ordered to pay $452m (£365m) with her former business partner Sunny Balwani to dozens of high-profile investors they defrauded through a blood-testing start-up. It's a sizeable bill for the former billionaire, who has claimed she does not even have enough money to pay her lawyers. In US federal court, convicted offenders are sometimes ordered to pay restitution. This is a reimbursement to victims for lost income, property damage, medical expenses or other financial costs related to the crime.

Recep Tayyip Erdogan may have serenaded his supporters by singing off-key after his victory - but he is pitch perfect when it comes to fighting elections. He read the electorate better than the pollsters and analysts, who suggested he could be beaten by the opposition. Well, not this time. His opponent - Kemal Kilicdaroglu - was just four percentage points behind him. No doubt President Erdogan will be reflecting on that as he starts his third term in office. This strategic Nato nation has chosen its path, most voters opting for a seasoned autocrat rather than an untested democrat in the form of Mr Kilicdaroglu.

You can spot Turkey's global strategic significance - which has starkly increased against the backdrop of the Ukraine war - by the A-list potpourri of world leaders who rushed to congratulate Recep Tayyip Erdogan on his election win on Sunday night. First out of the box was Russian President Vladimir Putin. He was so keen to stroke the ego of his Turkish counterpart and fellow "strongman" leader that he didn't even wait for the official results of the vote before singling out Mr Erdogan's "independent foreign policy" as a reason for his victory.

More than 300 COVID-19-related articles have been retracted — long after they’d done their damage — due to a lack of scientific truthfulness and ethical guidelines, according to Retraction Watch, a website that monitors retractions of science-related articles. According to Gunnveig Grødeland, a senior researcher at the Institute of Immunology at the University of Oslo, many researchers took ethical shortcuts when writing their essays. (Snip) The lion’s share of these articles was released in smaller publications, but the prestigious Lancet got nailed a few times as well. FACT-O-RAMA! The Lancet used fraudulent research when stating that hydroxychloroquine caused an increased risk of heart arrhythmia and even death in patients with COVID-19.

Ron DeSantis vowed to 'burn the National Institues of Health to the ground' if elected president, Democratic challenger Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has claimed. RFK Jr., the nephew of John F. Kennedy, made the remarks about the pro-lockdown agency in an interview with comedian-turned-conspiracy theorist Russell Brand. The 69-year-old told the British actor's podcast that he had met with the Florida governor during the pandemic to discuss a possible tilt at the White House.'We talked about him possibly running for the presidency, and I said 'how would you handle the NIH? And he said: "I will burn it to the ground.'

In 2018, Hunter Biden’s world was collapsing. The New York Times had run a story on one of his shady deals with the Chinese and his father, then vice president, was pulled into the vortex. It appears that Hunter was in a free fall and his uncle Jim Biden reached out in newly discovered messages to offer him a “safe harbor.” The exchange is an insight into a train wreck of a life of the scion of one of the most powerful families in the country. However, it is also insight into a world of influence peddling where millions simply evaporated in the coffers of the Biden family.

Every year, French caretakers spend hours preparing the grave markers at the American cemetery in Normandy — nearly 10,000 of them. In the United States, citizens spend Memorial Day remembering and honoring the service members who paid the ultimate price for the freedoms and liberties the rest of us enjoy – but for those who never made it home, some of the host nations do what they can to honor the Americans who fell defending them.In Normandy, for example, they routinely bring sand from D-Day’s most brutal landing site — Omaha Beach — and use it to darken the names and dates

At least nine people, including a one-year-old child and two other minors, were injured in a Memorial Day shooting on a packed Florida boardwalk. Authorities say a dispute between two groups ended in gunfire at around 6.45pm Monday in the area of the 1200 block of North Boardwalk in Hollywood Beach, north of Miami. One suspect has been detained, while another is still at large. An online video showed the moment gunfire erupted on the popular hotspot. The crowd frantically scattered for cover and away from danger when gunshots started to ring out near the Margaritaville resort.

While C. Boyden Gray was not well known nationally, he was a household name in Washington, D.C. But don’t hold that against Boyden, who died, at age 80, on May 21. Yes, he was a fixture in D.C., but he was not beloved by the Beltway, as attested by this sour obituary in The Washington Post. You see, Boyden was a career-long opponent of over-regulation, and as such, he was in opposition to the “business model” of the federal government, which is, of course, a well-fed bureaucracy. Red tape has been accumulating since the U.S. formalized itself in 1789;

Chinese authorities secretly investigated a lab at the heart of the row over Covid's origin after the pandemic began, an ex-insider sensationally revealed today. President Xi Jinping's communist administration has repeatedly denied the lab leak hypothesis throughout the pandemic, labelling it a smear campaign by 'anti-China' forces and insisting the virus emerged naturally in the city of Wuhan. Yet Beijing considered the theory credible enough to instigate its own formal probe, according to the former chief of the country's own CDC.

A silence kept in order to hide the truth is a lie. By that maxim, there are plenty of liars among prominent Democrats who knew that the damning Trump-Russia collusion narrative was all a hoax. But they chose to remain mum, preferring instead to watch contentedly as an American president was vilified nonstop by a media-driven orgy of lies. It consumed the nation for years and inflicted untold harm. None of them had the decency to volunteer the truth. This is one of the key findings in the 306-page Durham report that the special counsel filled to the brim with documented acts of deviousness, dishonesty and malice by high officials
