Republicans are starting to draw up a plan to raise the debt ceiling until May 2024 in exchange for reducing spending to FY 2022 levels. House GOP leadership has informally begun to draw up a proposal to share with rank-and-file members when Congress is back in session next week -- as Speaker Kevin McCarthy and President Biden remain at an impasse over the debt ceiling and have not discussed it in over two months. In exchange for lifting the nation's borrowing limit beyond $31.4 trillion, Republicans would ask for rollbacks in spending and a limit to budget growth of 1 percent annually for the next decade,

While McCarthy has actually been acting like a Republican this session, McConnell will fold and give the Demon-Rats anything they want (since he is not-so-secretly one of them). But, ultimately, the Republi-Can'ts will fold like wet noodles (like they always do), because they know that, between the Demon-Rats and the MSM, any hardships from a government shutdown will be blamed on the Republicans.

This is all just kabuki. How often have we been through this before? The appetite for spending is limitless, few people in the country (including nominal conservatives) care where the money comes from, and the conditions attached to the inevitable debt ceiling increase are always just window dressing - as though any future congress is going to feel bound by some previous and since forgotten scrap of paper. This is the way we have chosen to go for decades. The problem is much larger than any of the current players. Don't grope around hoping for any "true" conservatives to pull in the reins. The Debt Monster has a life of its own.

In a December 26, 1955 article in Time magazine, George Meany of the AFL-CIO warned Americans that [t]oo many in the free world fail to see the real nature of Communism as the mortal foe of everything that we hold dear, of every moral and spiritual value. Too many are still prisoners of the illusion that Communism is, historically speaking, a progressive system [or] ... extreme liberalism temporarily making bad mistakes. Actually, Communism ... is an anti-social system in which there are embedded some of the worst features of savagery, slavery, feudalism and life-sapping exploitation manifested in the industrial revolution of early-day capitalism. Meany forcefully asserted that

Let us pray. No less an authority than TIME magazine has seen fit to publish an opinion piece urging religious observance for the planet and its self-appointed watchkeepers under the headline: The Case For Making Earth Day a Religious Holiday. The editorial work, co-authored by New York professors Paul Greenberg and Carl Safina, was timed to coincide with Earth Day on Saturday. The self-declared environmentalists argued, “on this 53rd Earth Day we thought it useful to pose what a real Earth Day should represent and how it could form a central time for a new approach to worship.”

The Biden administration is reportedly finalizing a proposal that would force fossil fuel-fired power plants to substantially curb emissions or utilize costly carbon capture technology. The proposal — which will soon be released by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) — is expected to require coal- and natural gas-fired power plants to cut or capture the vast majority of their carbon dioxide emissions by 2040, The New York Times reported on Saturday, citing officials briefed on a draft of the plan. The regulation, if finalized, would represent the first-ever federal action curbing power plant emissions. "EPA cannot comment because the proposals are currently under interagency review,"

The dead registrants were found after officials reviewed death records from the Virginia Department of Health dating back to 1960 that were not previously shared. Subsequently, the dead registrants will be removed and a new set of protocols will be used by Virginia election officials to more quickly remove dead registrants from voter rolls in the future.
