Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine took to the podium on Tuesday to update reporters and citizens about the devastating train derailment in E. Palestine, Ohio, on February 3. The small town has been reeling in the wake of the derailment and subsequent controlled burn of dangerous chemicals days after the wreck. One of the most astounding revelations from the press conference (watch below) was that the train was not classified as carrying hazardous chemicals.
“I learned today from the PUCO [Public Utilities Council of Ohio] that this train was not considered a high hazardous material train,” DeWine said. As a result, the railroad was not required to notify anyone in Ohio

I would have thought the fact that an axil on that train was reported to the engineer as ON FIRE miles before the derailment was the "shocking revelation."
This didn't have to happen.

Everyone involved needs to be sued into eternity. This did not have to happen. It's almost like it was done on purpose. Those poor people. That could happen to any of us.

Norfolk Southern RR is a major transporter of industrial products. Read about Norfolk Southern's campaign about railroad bad breaks here: https://www.levernews.com/rail-companies-blocked-safety-rules-before-ohio-derailment/. The NSRR was operating the train that derailed in East Palestine Ohio. A lot of the train cars carried toxic chemicals that caused an explosion when the derailment occurred. Environmental officials in charge at the scene authorized a burn off of the chemicals, releasing phosphene gas (WWI gas) and other toxic chemicals that have affected an area including Ohio, PA, WV, KY and the Ohio River. TCT had clips of the Ohio equivalent to Fauci claiming that the toxic chemical release was harmless - yeah right! Gov. DeWine, another clueless politician, echoed the Ohio Fauci with a smile. East Palestine is Ohio's version of Chernobyl. Animals and fish are dying from the effects of the burn off. Human medical effects of the authorized release of the toxic chemicals will last for decades like the effects of those individuals that cleaned up the 9/11 site. A complete cluster f#$k by incompetent politicians and environment officials.

Note that the political class response to all this is NOT to voice outrage at the Federal government

This is pretty much a Republican area, would the crazies in the Biden mal-administration play politics with so many lives at stake?

FTA: 'Only time will tell if officials on the ground have done enough to mitigate the risks.' No need to wait! Experience tells us now. Not enough was done in the lead-up to the disaster. Had proper oversight been done, the train could not have been carry hazardous materials, without being identified as such. And if we ever learn the cause of the derailment, we'll now what sort of safety procedures and proper maintenance were ignored.

In re to why did it derail? I imagine if the axle was on fire because a wheel froze up that after a while the wheel would become so unstable that it would not be able to stay on the track, maybe even come off. The connection to the other cars would keep it on track for a short time but any slight turns in the track would not be good.

Tucker Carlson aired last night some of the DeWine press show along with his flamboyant public health director and talk about having ZERO percent confidence in either man. If this was black neighborhood they would be screaming for help from the federal government, etc. Really trying not to treat all blacks as the drain on society that too many of them are and the white liberals who cover for them, but it is hard.

This is why I call the Ohio Governor Duh-Whine as he looks like a clueless version of George Burns. ALso with his public health person. What a clown that guy is. Also where's Little Petey Booty Gauge? He should be front and center giving answering questions instead of being a twit on Twitter. Now we have another train derailment that had dangerous chemicals that weren't marked as such. So it was just an ordinary haul that has now polluted an area of totally six states so far. This whole thing stink and not just from the chemicals.

I hate to say it but. Hazardous cargo needs safety stricter regulations. Such as more frequent mechanical inspections, limiting the numbers of cars on a train that have hazardous material. Speed limits for hazardous cargo. Engineer and conductor working hours limited. Trains are still our most important cargo transit.

I thing the State has responded well. DeWine is a competent Governor but not not charismatic a character.
So, why was this train not tagged as hazardous? That is a question that has to be asked to Norfolk Southern and to to the Feds. As is usual, Peety is absolutely clueless about handling anything because he knows nothing about Transportation.

If the train was identified as Hazardous it would still have come off the track and it would still be the same problem. Putting several cars of Hazardous Material in the middle of a train of 40 to 100 cars is not a good idea.

Buttigieg is nowhere to be found in any of this because he knows nothing about the transportation industry and was just another unqualified woke hire that thinks his job is to be a gay activist. I feel deeply sorry for the people impacted by this and wish them well. Prayers.

One of the alleged reasons for shutting down Keystone pipeline was that it was hazardous. Although this event didn't involve crude, it certainly seems transport by rail is even more hazardous.

The Governor was afraid of an explosion that would send shrapnel for miles? Have these people not heard of blasting mats? Couldn't the National Guard have cooled the car they were concerned with? There were not just two bad options.

Trains cannot stop on a dime. How much time/distance it takes depends on how fast it is going, how heavy the load, the grade it is on (flat, uphill or downhill), and how the engineer is braking - emergency or controlled braking. Railroads have hot-box detectors along the tracks to check for overheated wheels and brakes. An emergency stop increases the chances of a derailment. Even if the engineers performed perfectly (and I'm not saying they didn't), this train couldn't have stopped immediately upon detecting the problem. This is one of the hazards of our modern society. You can't prevent every accident. You do the best prevention you can, and hope a catastrophic accident like this one happens in a remote area.

It seems no democrat in charge is ever in charge and qualified to run anything...they only want the title and the money...like the Ebola Czar...remember...he was given a huge office and staff and now WE know ebola is nonexistent in this country...more democrats giving jobs to politicians and laughing at Americans who are struggling to survive...

If the train had gone through a defect detector with the axle problem the engineer would have stopped and the suspect carrage would have been inspected and fixed by a car maintenance gang. It would be interested to see where the nearest detector was.

my takeaways: The train shouldn't have been carrying this cargo. Not ten rail cars of it; not one.
Two: It's dangerous. FISH showing up dead? Geez. Start checking pets, birds, and farm animals.
Three: You can't drink out of your well? If your well gets contaminated, you might never be able to drink out of it... but that's only true if you're close enough to be affected. Shouldn't they designate the area that has to worry about this? Otherwise, your well is safer than public water supplies that, after all, are shared with the fish.
