Munich — Cut through the haze of hoary proclamations emanating from the main stage of the Munich Security Conference about Western solidarity and common purpose this weekend, and one can’t help but notice more than a hint of foreboding just beneath the surface.
Even as Western leaders congratulate themselves for their generosity toward Ukraine, the country’s armed forces are running low on ammunition, equipment and even men. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who opened the conference from Kyiv on Friday, urged the free world to send more help — and fast. “We need speed,” he said.

Kathy Hochul’s dangerous and Orwellian “Hateful Conduct Law” suffered a major defeat, being struck down in the Southern District of New York by Judge Andrew L. Carter. That came after Rumble and a blogger teamed up to challenge the law in court.
The law, which Hochul originally signed in the summer of 2022, would have forced social media companies to “report” hateful conduct to the state (in this case, New York) and also have policies in place to censor such speech.
According to Judge Carter (Breitbart), that was a no-go given the protections afforded by the First Amendment.

Secretary of State Antony Blinken met with China's top diplomat in Munich on Saturday amid tensions between the two countries over a Chinese surveillance object shot down by the United States.
Blinken met with Wang Yi while the two diplomats were attending the Munich Security Conference. State Department Spokesperson Ned Price released a statement confirming the two diplomats "met on the margins" of the Munich meeting which represents the first in-person meeting between China and the U.S. since the surveillance object was shot down.
"The Secretary directly spoke to the unacceptable violation of U.S. sovereignty and international law by the PRC high-altitude surveillance balloon in U.S. territorial airspace,

Jimmy Carter has “decided to spend his remaining time at home” in hospice care after a series of short hospital stays, the 98-year-old former president’s family said in a statement on Saturday.
The statement, issued by the Carter Center, said the ex-president’s choice had “the full of support of his family and his medical team”. It also said the family “asks for privacy during this time and is grateful for the concern shown by his admirers”.
Carter, a Democrat, was president of the US from 1977 to 1981. The late Ronald Reagan, a Republican, succeeded Carter after defeating him at the end of his lone term in the Oval Office.

The search for small balloons shot down recently by US and Canadian fighter jets over Alaska and Lake Huron has been called off, military commanders have said, days after balloon hobbyists in northern Illinois indicated that one of the stray unidentified flying objects could belong to their group.
In a joint statement released at 10 pm on Friday, the North American aerospace defense command (Norand) and the US northern command said they had recommended calling off the search because the objects were believed to have landed in difficult terrain. The US secretary of defense, Lloyd Austin, had approved the defense agencies’ recommendation.

The U.S. military has finished recovering parts of the Chinese spy balloon shot down off the South Carolina coast.
The joint Navy, Coast Guard and FBI operation concluded Thursday, the Defense Department’s U.S. Northern Command said Friday in a statement. The final pieces were transported from the crash site to FBI headquarters in Virginia.
Though China maintains the balloon was a weather monitoring device that blew off course, U.S. leaders said recovery operations confirmed it was designed for surveillance. Northern Command said the FBI was conducting “counterintelligence exploitation.”

The publisher Puffin has scrubbed language deemed “insensitive” and “non-inclusive” from author Roald Dahl’s children’s books, in many cases rewriting the author’s words to be more politically correct.
Puffin and the Roald Dahl Story Company worked with Inclusive Minds, which is dedicated to “inclusion and accessibility in children’s literature,” its spokesperson told the Daily Mail, to dilute the creator’s playful narratives to be more acceptable to what they consider contemporary culture.
References to characters’ physical appearances have been sanitized, with the words “fat” and “ugly” now missing from every new edition of the books, the Daily Telegraph reported.

Exclusive: The White House explained why it turned down Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine's request for disaster relief this week in the aftermath of a derailment of a train hauling toxic chemicals.
A Biden administration official told Fox News Digital that it has provided extensive assistance to surrounding communities following the chemical release earlier this month in eastern Ohio. However, the official said the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), the agency that usually provides relief to communities hit by hurricanes and other natural disasters, isn't best equipped to support the state's current needs.
"The Biden Administration is mobilizing a robust, multi-agency effort to support the people of East Palestine, Ohio. Since February 3,

There’s a lot more to this story than just the uncovering of another Rachel Dolezal. I’m not sure if the subtext was clear to the Intercept, who published this story today, but it’s pretty glaring to me.
Members of the American Friends Service Committee, a prominent Quaker organization known for its progressive values and social justice advocacy in the U.S. and abroad, have raised an alarm about a woman holding a leadership position within the organization who they say has misrepresented her ethnic background for years and who they fear may be working on behalf of groups seeking to undermine their organization.

The Justice Department completed a search Friday of the offices of former Vice President Pence's group, Advancing American Freedom, according to a Pence adviser.
Pence adviser Devin O'Malley told CBS News the Justice Department searched the group's office for several hours and found no new documents with classified markings but did take one binder with approximately three previously redacted documents.
"The vice president has consistently cooperated with appropriate authorities, has been fully transparent and looks forward to the imminent conclusion of this matter," O'Malley said.

CNN chairman Chris Licht said Friday that he was “disappointed” by Don Lemon’s recent comment that 51-year-old Nikki Haley “isn’t in her prime.”
“His remarks were upsetting, unacceptable and unfair to his co-hosts, and ultimately a huge distraction to the great work of this organization,” Licht said during his daily editorial call, according to the New York Times.
Haley announced her 2024 presidential bid this week and suggested politicians over 75 years old should be required to pass mental competency tests.
Amid a discussion of Haley’s comments on Thursday, Lemon suggested Haley herself isn’t in her prime:

Republicans on the House Committee on Oversight and Accountability Committee are kicking off their investigation into the Biden administration's withdrawal from Afghanistan Friday, sending letters requesting information to the White House, Pentagon, State Department, Department of Homeland Security, USAID and the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
This investigation is one Republicans tried to start in August 2021 while they were in the minority, but they say they didn't receive substantive responses. Now in the majority, House Republicans on the committee, led by Rep. James Comer of Kentucky, are giving the various agencies until March 3 to respond. Holding the House majority also gives the GOP subpoena power, although Republicans
