A powerful arctic blast swept into the Northeastern U.S. on Friday, pushing temperatures to a record low- with New Hampshire's Mount Washington recording a wind chill of -104 degrees Fahrenheit (-75 Celsius).
A National Weather Service (NWS) advisory said the mass of frigid air would keep temperatures at life-endangering levels through Saturday, warning of 'extremely dangerous' conditions from the 'short-lived blast.'
Situated in the White Mountains of northern New Hampshire at 6,288 feet, the Mount Washington Observatory was dealing with a combination of extreme cold and strong winds from an intense blast of arctic air.

Blame it on Global WARMING.
The sunspot cycles have been trending towards colder weather for the last four of their 11 year cycles. I've been betting on a long term cooling trend for a couple of decades. This doesn't surprise me at all. We hit -7F several days at our Colorado mountain cabin last February.

Why do they keep mentioning wind chill? It only matters on exposed skin outside. Otherwise, the number is meaningless. Actual temperature matters.

Not fair. Mount Washington gets all of the weather records. Highest wind speed ever recorded, too.

I was born in Michigan and we used to call this 'winter.' Now-a-days it's like the end of everything and even the tv clowns tell you how to dress and how long you should stay outside. Country of sissies.

If you ever get the chance to visit Mt. Washington do so. Go in the summer of course, but even then, at the summit, temps can be in the 40's or 50's when temperatures at the base are in the 80's. Not always of course, but it's a really neat trip and the views from the top are spectacular on a clear day. Funny how a mountain at only 6200 feet could have the kind of weather that even the Rockies don't get all because of the jet stream.

The headline reports a record cold wind chill value. Wind chill is not a true temperature. It is a calculated value of what the measured temperature what temperature would result in an equivalent loss of heat in the absence of wind. Years ago when wind chill reports were introduced they were just reported in addition to the measured temperature. However, in the spirit of "if it leads it bleeds" the weather reports now love to report very scary wind chill numbers. Since wind chill reports are a fairly recent practice, this may not be as significant a record as it appears. The "climate change" crowd changed the name of their hoax from global warming to climate change so they could use both cold and hot weather to browbeat the public into compliance with their green regulations. I can also recall when federal regulations causing changes to the design of automobile engines were justified by claims of reducing smog in areas like LA where large populations choose to live in areas where exhaust fumes don't easily get dispersed. The first fix for that was putting pcv systems on engines rather than letting crankcase vapors vent into an open tube. Progressive government means despotic control is achieved by small progressive measures. Is this real progress? I depends on which side of the political aisle you choose, liberty or servitude.

In my previous post I wish to offer an apology for my poor wording and typos. When I type a string of thought onto the page and hit enter, I often wish for an edit button. This site doesn't offer one.

EVERY bit of Weather is a borderline Catastrophe....Media reports it ALL like it is a plane wreck.
Just overheard a"News" report on CNN(my 92yo father watches it, cannot get him to change) While they are breathlessly describing the Deadly conditions...they closed with "By the day after tomorrow temp will be 48degrees, MUCH WARMER THAN NORMAL!!!"
I can just see the stories then...150degree Temps swing in TWO DAYS!!!! The sky is LITERALLY falling!!! It's raining WOLVES!!!

I'm with #3 &12. Wind chill factors are not a temperature! They are a theoretical "feels like" factor. Only very recently has it ignorantly and confusingly started being called a temperature. Still, the -40 is the same super cold temperature in C or F, even without the 80mph wind!
Oh, and stop saying Richter scale, while you're at it. It's "magnitude". I think that one is starting to sink in.

Re #11, hikers periodically die of hypothermia on Mr. Washington because of the weather phenomenon that you reported. People leave 80 degree weather, hiking in shorts and T shirts without any warm clothes, and head for the top. They climb in the sun, in the morning. And there is, occasionally, a big weather system brewing up on the far side of the mountain, unseen. They get up, the temps drop to 40s and the wind gets really high and rain comes, and they are wet, chilled, and if not quickly gotten to shelter and warmed, will die.
It's not exactly an everyday occurrence but IIRC the total number of hypothermia deaths is in the thirties, over a number of years. Enough that there are warnings signs about "the worst weather in America" and "people have died of exposure even in the summer" on the trail.
And the record winds on Mr. Washington were 231 mph....which is purely amazing.

I thank the good Lord every day that I live in Florida. We had a high of 68° today. I grew up in those frigid temps. I gladly leave them to heartier folks than me.
