Tony-winning actress Melinda Dillon, best known for her starring role in Steven Spielberg’s 1977 epic Close Encounters of the Third Kind, has passed away at 83. The two-time Oscar nominee's family confirmed in an obituary that she died on January 9, but no cause of death has been revealed at this time. Over her legendary career in Hollywood, the star, who was born in Hope, Arkansas earned a nod for Best Supporting Actress twice at the Academy Awards. Her acting credits in film, television and on Broadway span more than four decades. In addition to a memorable role as Ralphie’s high-strung mother, A Christmas Story,

What many people don't know about CE3K, when the kitchen blew up after the aliens came to her house, the only people who knew what would happen were the director and the little boy who played her son. She had no idea that the kitchen appliances were going to go crazy, so her screams of terror were absolutely real. While she was wonderful in that movie, I will always remember her as Ralphie's mom in A Christmas Story. She played "everymom" so perfectly. RIP, lovely lady.

Yes, loved her as the mom in A Christmas Story! Wondered why she didn’t participate in the recent 3rd sequel on HBO Max—she was probably ill.

She will live on for a very long time as Ralphy's wonderful mother. RIP, you have left a really wonderful Christmas story. Unfortunately, I just barely didn't walk out of Close Encounters and ask for my money back for thed stupidest movied I ever paid to see. I've always regretted that I didn't leave. It wasn't her fault, it was Spielberg's fault.

She was a good actress who really wasn't appreciated as much as she should have been. For me she will always be remembered as Ralphie's mom.

OP...I recently read that in the last scene of Christmas Story (at the Chinese restaurant), Melinda was given a different script. She wasn't aware of "the smiling duck", nor its head was to be chopped off. He reactions are genuine

She was not a hgh strung mother in A Christmas Story. She was an old fashioned mother who coped with a goofy husband and eccentric kids.

Over twenty-five years ago, before I decided that no movie was worth going to ever again, I walked out of the Deer Hunter because the first half of the move was slow, stupid, juvenile and about as exciting as watching a turtle fight. It was a year later that I learned that the last half of the movie was some of the best acting and action in the history of Hollywood.

It downshifted. An elevator malfunction at a Ferrari dealership left a $240,000 Roma model damaged and dangling this week in Palm Beach, Florida. Firefighters were called to the scene after the shaft disaster and it took them four hours to extricate the battered Italian sports car from the elevator. “A car elevator malfunction caused a car to hang in the elevator shaft,” Palm Beach County Fire and Rescue wrote of the operation on Facebook. They had to first stop a dangerous fuel leak from the silver Ferrari, a process that required them to shut off all power to the dealership. The sleek automobile has plunged tail first into the empty chamber,

We have a Chinese spy balloon roaming American skies unimpeded, and the Biden White House thinks that’s fine. They were snippy with the press when they asked for more details about the high-altitude spy balloon reportedly launched from central China. Beijing has apologized for breaching our air space, though the reasoning is ridiculous: they claim it blew off course. The incident has caused Secretary of State Antony Blinken to cancel his scheduled visit to the country. It was spotted by passengers on a commercial airliner yesterday. Montana is where this device was first tracked. It’s now somewhere hovering above Kansas.

So we begin with a bit of a biographical note. Like many writers at PJ Media, I work from home. There was a knock at my door this morning, and I noticed a police vehicle outside. As we are law-abiding people, that was out of the ordinary. At my door was the animal control officer. That seemed odd since our dogs stay in the backyard and don’t roam around the neighborhood. The issue that warranted said knock on my door was the fact that I had inadvertently left one of our dogs out a little longer than usual.

Before medicine was a science, loved ones would place a bell on top of a grave so that if the doctors made a mistake, the awakened — and presumably terrified — occupant of the grave could alert those close by that the burial had taken place in error. Of course, that doesn’t happen anymore. The medical establishment is far too sophisticated, and far too regulated, for a terrible mistake like that to happen. Nowadays we have machines that tell us when we’re dead. And not just when we’re merely dead, but when we’re really, really, sincerely dead.

Researchers in the United States and the United Kingdom have revealed that Lagevrio, a drug designed by Merck meant to treat COVID, is causing the virus to mutate in patients. This creates the potential for more communicable and deadly versions of COVID to emerge in the future. When one studies how Lagevrio works, this should not come as a shock. The pill attacks the COVID virus by trying to alter its genetic code. Once inside a human cell, a virus can make 10,000 copies of its genetic code in a few hours. Each copy made increases the risk the virus makes a rare mistake and creates an inexact replica.

On one hand, college must be a breeze these days, since actually learning something no longer appears to be a requirement on many campuses. On the other hand, when institutions of higher education are on perpetual crusades against racism, sexism, and whatever other “isms” are currently in vogue, the list of potential targets will inevitably grow short. That, of course, is bad for business. After all, no one wants to get all geared up for the Two Minutes Hate with their best piercings and signs, only to find that the mass hysteria has been canceled for lack of something to protest.

But since Saudis are generally considered “white,” will the feds call this “white supremacist terrorism”? Don’t put it past them. Fighter jets shot down the Chinese spy balloon over the Atlantic today after Joe Biden vowed to 'take care of it' and the FAA shutdown three airports in the Carolinas. The balloon was seen bursting at 2.38pm and its payload - the metal structure carrying its cameras - appeared to have been separated as it plummeted towards the ocean off Myrtle Beach. The Biden administration confirmed the shoot-down order around 2pm after the President this morning vowed, 'We're gonna take care of it,' as he stepped off Air Force One at Hancock Field Air National Guard Base, upstate NY.

However, they did not clarify whether a military option was considered when the craft transgressed U.S. airspace over Alaska’s Aleutian Islands on Jan. 28,

The United States could bring down the Chinese surveillance balloon currently flying eastward across the country by shooting it with a laser, which would cause it to gradually descend without inflicting serious damage to civilians on the ground, according to an aerospace specialist. The Defense Department previously ruled out shooting down the balloon, which was first spotted earlier this week in Montana, saying that its size could cause a debris field large enough to harm Americans. But Art Thompson, CEO of California-based company Sage Cheshire Aerospace which provides stratospheric balloon launching and research services, believes that a “semi-controlled descent” could be a solution.
