Two contrasting realities of the present-day Republican Party were on display on Tuesday. In the House of Representatives, 20 members of the GOP's so-called chaos caucus blocked the efforts of 202 fellow Republicans to elect Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) as speaker. The move led to a once-in-a-century standoff that paralyzed the House. Members cannot be sworn in, committees cannot be formed, and lawmakers cannot do any work until the deadlock is broken, whenever that might be.
Meanwhile, in Tallahassee, newly reelected Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) took the oath of office for a second term with a ringing statement of accomplishment and ambition that could well be the foundation of

The number of people on planet Earth is about 8 billion. The number has grown exponentially, as numbers that are the result of exponential functions do. It’s something like the miracle of compound interest. The graph tells the story.
I don’t think we’re on the verge of starving ourselves. That Malthusian apocalypse gets proven wrong over and over. That’s because Malthusians fail to foresee the agricultural productivity ensuing from technology. For that matter, they fail to foresee the general increase in well-being and comfort that technology brings about.

Walter Cunningham, the last surviving astronaut from the first successful crewed space mission in NASA's Apollo program, died Tuesday in Houston. He was 90.
NASA confirmed Cunningham's death on Twitter.
"Today we mourn the passing of Walt Cunningham: U.S. Marine, patriot, and Apollo astronaut. Cunningham spent 11 days in low-Earth orbit during Apollo 7, the first crewed Apollo flight, and was instrumental to our Moon landing's program success," the space agency wrote. Cunningham was one of three astronauts aboard the 1968 Apollo 7 mission, an 11-day spaceflight that beamed live television broadcasts as they orbited Earth, paving the way for the moon landing less than a year later.

The House voted Wednesday night to adjourn and reconvene on Thursday after GOP leader Kevin McCarthy failed in a sixth attempt for the speakership earlier in the day.
Republican representative Tom Cole made a motion to adjourn, which succeeded on a razor-thin margin with 216 Republicans favoring and 214 Democrats opposing. There was much hubbub as the votes rolled in, with some members grumbling, some cheering, and others dashing across the room as the process was about to end. Republican representatives Matt Gaetz, Lauren Boebert, Andy Biggs, and Brent Crane voted not to adjourn.

Barbara Walters died last week at 93, but the legendary journalist’s legacy lives on: “The View,” the daytime-TV talker she created in 1997, is the most-watched — and most-talked-about — show in its genre.
Some legacy, though: What Walters envisioned as “women of different generations, backgrounds and views” discussing “the topics of the day, mixing humor with intelligent debate,” devolved after she departed as co-host in 2014 into a four-against-one daily catfight with few laughs and even fewer smarts.
The New York Times calls it “the most important political TV show in America.” If so, America is in trouble — because “The View” is the biggest source of misinformation in the country.

In the most predictable breaking news possible, on Wednesday evening CNN host Erin Burnett announced on her eponymous program Erin Burnett OutFront that former anti-Trump Republican and Pelosi picked January 6 committee member Adam Kinzinger has been hired as a "senior political commentator" on the network. This of course makes perfect sense because other than our friend Scott Jennings, Adam Kinzinger is the only type of "Republican" voice allowed on CNN. No real conservative viewpoint is welcomed.

“Yeah, I support McCarthy,” Trump told Breitbart News during an interview from his Doral golf resort in Miami, Florida.
“Look, I think this: Kevin has worked very hard,” Trump added. “He is just — it’s been exhausting. If you think, he’s been all over. I think he deserves the shot. Hopefully, he’s going to be very strong and going to be very good and he’s going to do what everybody wants.”

The only thing not going viral in China is the truth. Chinese officials are spewing lies to cover up the massive COVID carnage there.
Worse, US public-health officials dawdled for a week, allowing air travelers from China in without testing, while other countries immediately blocked infected travelers from entering. Aerial photos and videos from China show body bags stacked outside hospitals and crematoria, funeral-home parking lots full (Snip) More dangerous, China is also withholding laboratory evidence about what strains are sickening its population. Is it the Omicron variants we are accustomed to treating or something new?

A controversial criminal justice reform bill officially took effect on Sunday, with the exception of a key provision put on hold by a court at the last minute, that will make significant changes to how law enforcement handles crimes in the state.
Illinois' Safety, Accountability, Fairness and Equity-Today (SAFE-T) Act took effect on Sunday although a key part of the bill, which eliminates cash bail in the state, was halted when the Illinois Supreme Court issued a stay at the last minute on Saturday evening in order to "maintain consistent pretrial procedures throughout Illinois."
The bill’s other provisions that took effect Sunday, like limiting when defendants can be deemed flight risks,

NEW YORK - Sam Bankman-Fried pleaded not guilty on Tuesday to criminal charges that he cheated investors in his now-bankrupt FTX cryptocurrency exchange and caused billions of dollars in losses, in what prosecutors have called an "epic" fraud.
He entered his plea in Manhattan federal court where he faces eight criminal counts, including wire fraud and money laundering conspiracy. The 30-year-old ex-mogul is accused of looting FTX customers' deposits to support his Alameda Research hedge fund, buy real estate and donate millions of dollars to political causes. "Customer funds were also used and laundered through political donations, charitable donations and a variety of venture investments," Danielle Sassoon, a federal prosecutor,

Karl Rove, former Bush White House aide and Fox News contributor, broke down why he believes the voting for the House speaker is unlikely to stop anytime soon, calling the GOP’s failure to elect Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) an “utter, unmitigated disaster.”
“With us, former White House deputy chief of staff to Fox News contributor. Karl, I suppose you have to be wondering what sort of horse-trading was done in between the votes here?” began Fox News anchor Sandra Smith.

Recently, Elon Musk tweeted out that his preferred pronouns are “prosecute/Fauci.”
Of course, the usual suspects in the media were clutching their pearls, screaming that Musk was putting the sainted Dr. Fauci at risk, while their daily attacks against conservatives (and even moderates) continue unabated. (Snip)

The S&P Global U.S. Manufacturing Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) fell at the fastest rate since May 2020 in December, a continuing sign that the manufacturing sector is on the decline, S&P Global reported Tuesday.
The U.S. Manufacturing PMI posted a 46.2 in December, down from 47.7 in November and solidly below 50, which signals that the sector is contracting, according to S&P Global. Production levels contracted in back-to-back months, with new sales plummeting at the end of December at the fastest pace since 2007, as companies cited weakening demand amid “economic uncertainty” and inflation weighing on customers.

The collapse of Damar Hamlin, Buffalo Bills Safety, after a tackle, has been described as a “heart attack,” but the reader should be warned that medical events are sometimes not described properly.
What everybody who was watching the game witnessed on Monday was Mr. Hamlin taking what looked like an ordinary hit to the chest. He and the other player both hit the ground, they both stood up, and then Hamlin collapsed in an instant. He received at least nine minutes of CPR on the field before an ambulance arrived to take him to the hospital, where he is still in critical condition.

When they enter the medical profession, medical students are required to take the Hippocratic Oath, which includes a provision to “do no harm.” Perhaps economists at the Federal Reserve Board should be required to take a similar oath. Based on their performance over the past two decades, Fed economists have failed to use monetary policy to fulfill the twin mandate of price stability and full employment.
During the Great Moderation in monetary policy in the 1980s and 1990s under the leadership of Fed chairmen Paul Volcker and Alan Greenspan, the Fed fulfilled this mandate

As a new year begins, Americans are having second thoughts over China’s expanded global role after its recent saber-rattling, President Xi Jinping’s creeping authoritarianism and the country’s questionable COVID-19 policies. With global companies now preparing themselves for an uncertain year, the I&I/TIPP Poll asked Americans whether U.S. businesses should be pulling back from China. The answer: a resounding “yes.”
Specifically, I&I/TIPP asked Americans whether they agreed or disagreed with the following statement: “American companies should do more to stand up to China, even if it hurts their businesses.”

The latest Twitter documents revealed that the CIA sent warnings about a book claiming that Joe and Hunter Biden conducted corruption in Ukraine.
Following up a breakdown of what led to Twitter's cooperation with the FBI, journalist Matt Taibbi's latest Twitter Files dump detailed how that partnership allowed the agency to become the 'belly button' to filter government demands.
Among those demands included a message from the CIA warning about a new book by former Ukrainian prosecutor Viktor Shokin, which contained claims of corruption by the US government, specifically, by the Bidens.

Reporter Matt Taibbi has dropped the latest round of Twitter files, this time dubbed “The FBI Belly Button.”
The new files detail a tangled web being woven between the FBI, the State Department, Twitter (and other social media companies) and media. While Twitter exec Yoel Roth was keen to deal with the FBI, he and others in the social media giant quickly became concerned about the flood of other agencies rushing in to get their piece of the censorship pie. The FBI has had their hooks in Twitter since long before the 2020 election, but when you get into bed with the devil, you’d best believe you’ll soon find yourself

On Tuesday, Jan. 3, Republican Ron DeSantis was sworn in for the second time as Florida Governor. The inauguration, which also included swearing-in ceremonies for Lieutenant Governor, Attorney General, CFO, and Commissioner of Agriculture, had the feel of something much bigger. The ceremony included the 13th Army Band of the Florida National Guard, an artillery salute, and a fighter jet flyover. First Lady Casey DeSantis wore a gown with a cape and gloves, and gave off a Jackie O vibe. DeSantis delivered a speech that highlighted his first-term record of policy achievements, while laying out an aggressive second-term agenda that touched on everything from ending wokeness

Conservative writer and author David French is joining The New York Times as a columnist, the newspaper announced on Tuesday.
French, who has emerged as a leading critic among conservatives of former President Trump in recent years, helped launch the anti-Trump conservative website “The Dispatch” before spending several years as a writer at The National Review. The Times, in a note announcing French’s hire, described him as “forthright in his views, yet open to counterargument; sincere in his ideological commitments, yet willing to call out those who normally share his beliefs when he believes they’ve wandered astray.”
French begins at the Times later this month.
