An NYPD officer on his first day on the job was stabbed in the head with a machete by a 19-year-old who investigators believe may be an Islamic extremist during New Year's Eve celebrations near Times Square. The attack happened just after 10 p.m. about eight blocks from Times Square, just outside of the high-security zone where thousands of revelers were screened for weapons as they prepared to ring in 2023. Trevor Bickford, 19, of Wells, Maine, allegedly approached the officers on 8th Avenue between 51st and 52nd streets armed with a large knife that he used to slash two of them, Commissioner Keechant Sewell said at an overnight press conference.

I’ve never understood why anyone goes to Times Square on New Year’s Eve. Why spend hours standing in the cold with hundreds of thousands of packed in people, no bathrooms and thugs everywhere just to see that ball drop when you get a much better view at home on your television.

I never understood why people go to crowd events either, but my former daughter-in-law was one of those who had to be where "the action was." New Year's Eve parties have always felt like an "air of desperation" for me. You must have a good time and as a result they were less enjoyable than any other party. I was glad when close friends decided to go out to dinner, get home early, get lots of sleep so that New Year's Day was very pleasant -- a great way to start the new year. When we now have people pouring into our country, many with nefarious intent, huge crowds could be risky.

#2, 11: Amen. I read that headline and also knew you can't "stab" with a machete, so I went looking a picture of the knife in question. Sure looks like a modern, dumbed-down, commercial version of a kukri to me. You would think a British paper would be better at identifying a kukri, since the Gurkhas were (and still are) legendary fighters in the British military.

The media doesn't know any more about knives than they do guns. Like another poster said, it is a Gurkha knife, traditionally carried by Nepalese warriors. As a machete they would be about worthless.

You can bet that there were hundreds of armed New York City police officers on duty around Times Square when the Muslim perpetrated those assaults on police officers, with what media photographs showing that his weapon was a kukri knife and not a machete. It’s obvious under the circumstances that by attacking at least three of those police officers with a kukri knife seriously wounding at least one of the officers was an attempted suicide by cop. As once he attacked those police officers with that kukri knife it would be just a matter of seconds before the police officers would shoot him.

A priceless treasure hoard buried by a family fleeing the Second World War has been found 80 years later by the next generation. The Glazewski family buried their silver and fled their estate in eastern Poland in September 1939 after hearing that the Russians were invading. Only Adam, the head of the family, stayed behind to face the Russians, who threw him off his land, and nearly executed him before his staff intervened. Faced with a life under Soviet rule, his four sons never returned to their home near Lviv - formerly part of Poland, today part of Ukraine - and settled around the world.

Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg is coming under fire over disasters ranging from the airlines’ holiday meltdown to the train wreck that has spilled chemicals in Ohio — and critics are blaming his cozy ties with the industries he’s supposed to regulate. Outrage over US air chaos spilled into President Biden’s State of the Union Address earlier this month. The commander-in-chief vowed to crack down on excessive fees, saying “airlines can’t treat your child like a piece of baggage” and demanded that “airlines show you the full ticket price upfront and refund your money if your flight is canceled or delayed.”

The Biden administration is preparing to sign up the United States to a “legally binding” accord with the World Health Organization (WHO) that would give this Geneva-based UN subsidiary the authority to dictate America’s policies during a pandemic. The average person can’t describe the daily responsibilities of the secretary of transportation or even name the figure who holds that position — until our transportation infrastructure fails, that is. As far as cushy political appointments go, it’s on the thankless end of the spectrum. At least that was the case before Pete Buttigieg ascended to the role in 2021. Now the secretary of transportation is both a political celebrity and someone immune to meaningful criticism over our country’s transportation failures — and there have been many.Though the left rarely misses an opportunity to announce that “the adults are back in charge,” Buttigieg’s failures suggest otherwise.
