U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken on Sunday traveled to survey damage from two devastating earthquakes as he announced $100 million in funds for Turkey and Syria. "Profoundly saddened to see firsthand the devastation of the earthquakes in Turkey. The United States remains committed to doing everything we can to help with rescue, relief and recovery efforts," Blinken said in a statement. Blinken said the United States has already responded with $85 million in humanitarian assistance after a 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck Turkey and Syria on Feb. 6 followed by a 7.7-magnitude earthquake hours later, leaving tens of thousands dead.

Every time I read a headline like this, I wonder if the money cannot be better spent on people whose businesses had to close during COVID, or on sensible nuclear energy or oil production in America. What these cretins keep spending money on is making us go broke with nothing to show for it. But hey, Turkey and Ukraine are happy, right Joe?

Trump famously bragged about acing his own mental acuity test while he was in office. In oral arguments set for Tuesday, the Supreme Court will address the scope of Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act for the first time as legal experts signal a ruling against Google could change the internet for the worse by opening online companies up to a flurry of litigation. The justices will hear arguments in a case appealed by the family of Nohemi Gonzalez, a 23-year-old California-based woman who was shot and killed in 2015 by Islamist militants in Paris. Lower courts previously dismissed a lawsuit against YouTube's owner Google seeking monetary damages, citing Section 230. Google and YouTube are part of parent company Alphabet

Last weekend, we celebrated the 8th birthday of one our youngest (of 18) grandchildren. For all of us, "family events" like these offer an opportunity to reflect on the future of our progeny. President Ronald Reagan (having borrowed the phrase from John Winthrop) often described our nation thus: "America is a shining city upon a hill whose beacon light guides freedom-loving people everywhere." Unfortunately, given the present domestic trajectory of our country and threats from foreign adversaries, our hopes for all our grandchildren may well fall short of Reagan's vision unless things change dramatically and in short order. Herewith, some current domestic vulnerabilities: Constitutional infringement:

Members of the now-defunct January 6 Committee howled in protest as Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) reportedly gave Fox News host Tucker Carlson access to over 40,000 hours of footage of the Capitol riot. The Committee, hand-picked by then Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) for their hatred of former President Donald Trump, only released selected clips — and doctored the evidence to push their narrative of an “insurrection.” Critics of the committee had long argued that they should release all of the evidence. After Axios reported that Carlson had been given the footage, committee members reacted in outrage — mostly singing from the same songsheet: namely, accusing Carlson,

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday accused the West of trying to turn a “local conflict” in Ukraine into a “global confrontation” — as he issued a nuclear warning to Kyiv’s allies in an unhinged speech to his country’s parliament and elites, which signaled no end in sight for the bloody war. Russia’s defiant 70-year-old leader delivered his rambling address railing against the West just days before the one-year anniversary of Ukraine’s invasion – and a mere 24 hours after President Biden made a surprise visit to Kyiv in a show of support for the embattled country. We were told there were 14,000 hours of surveillance video, but now it appears there are roughly 41,000 hours of tape. Tucker has long questioned whether J6 was an actual insurrection. The FBI stated in August 2021 they found little evidence that the crowd tried to topple the United States. A Harvard University survey released in August 2022 said the same thing. Democrats have fought to keep the tapes under wraps. That is understandable, as it’s hard to cry “insurrection” when looking at videos

Aged party leaders, bundled up in overcoats and fur hats to the point of near-unrecognizability, would be wheeled out to sit, immobile, as parades passed or party congresses opened. The long-range missiles matter. So do the super-accurate artillery shells, the surface-to-air missiles, and the winter weather gear; the training in the English countryside or the muddy Grafenwöhr maneuver grounds; and the intelligence provided from the eyes in space and the ears on airplanes that circle outside the battlezone. President Biden’s visit to Kyiv matters just as much as any of these. Other heads of government preceded him, earning deserved credit. But it is an altogether different thing when the president of the United States—who is, indeed, the leader of the Free World—shows up. His words mattered.
