Florida Governor Ron DeSantis is showing elected officials across the country what true leadership looks like.
In just three days, the construction of the Pine Island Bridge — damaged during the hurricane — has already been repaired so that emergency responders and the general public can reach the island.
This was two days ahead of schedule.(Tweet/Video) Politico reported:
The state of Florida reconnected a key bridge decimated by Hurricane Ian that cut off mainland road access for thousands of residents, but fixing a second damaged bridge system to reconnect another barrier island could take weeks longer even for a temporary solution.

Democrats would have to wait for an environmental impact report on the repairs and reconstruction and the Sierra Club would file a suit claiming it would harm Sea anemonies and starfish.

Amazing. He has greatness written all over him. I'd advise him to be careful, tho. Lots of politicians in Washington won't like this.

that's just like Trump who fixed the Wollman Memorial skating rink in 6 months that took the city 6 years and it still wasn;t fixed.

Anyone else think that the second sentence of the article, "In just three days...", is a bit nonsensical, as written? For the first time with TGP, the headline better reflects the subject matter than does the text.

Sure, #3 -- "the construction has already been repaired" is lousy grammar. I'm guessing there was a hurried edit involving repeated use of cut-and-paste. It's really easy to have one word wind up out of place, or to cut one word too many, or one word too few.
Regarding the bridge repair: I just hope the expedited fixes will last long enough to finish the storm repairs and cleanup on the island.

How about that! And just a few days ago I read it would take years before that bridge would be repaired!

Good story, but a question for the News Staff. How does a hurricane decimate a bridge? Was only 10% of it knocked down?

#9...yea...in fact only about 10% of the bridge was out...the section furthest to the right in these photo's, they replaced/repaired than one section, cleaned the roadway, where they replaced another couple of washed out segments...rolled in.

Some people make it seem so easy. Surrounding roads may still be blocked, and as of earlier, power was still out to almost 300,000 homes.
Ya think Biden's 'Build Back Better' plan had ANYTHING to do with this? And he used to be a bridge builder.

it's a funny thing about the American worker, he/she is unfathomably proficient when they are treated like human beings and not like slaves in a Gulag, we saw it in World War II and Korea and Vietnam and the Middle East, when the enemy had to think twice if they wanted to tangle with a Tiger that has 2 foot long fangs but was as docile as a new born baby
Ron DeSantis would have been a magnificent General but instead he was a magnificent legislator and now he's a magnificent Governor and he might become a magnificent President, on a par with a truly magnificent President and we all know who I mean MAGA, 2024

#10, Only 10%? Would you travel over a bridge that was even just 5% compromised? 10% is a huge gap and an even more impressive feat is repairing it so quickly. DeSantis is a problem solver and I fully agree with Poster #12. Well said.

That’s how Trump does things as well. Only Heavy D does it without bragging about it. Get it done, and go on to the next thing that needs doing. America in the hands of these two men would right this ship of State in a year, leaving the gasping Left in the right lane trying desperately to catch up to the convoy.

Of course, we all know that Gavin Newsom would have gotten it done in 2 days. In his suit, without a single hair out of place. And one-handed, the other hand holding a glass of red Napa Valley wine.

I love Ron DeSantis and not because he is the SUPER HUMAN, EXTRAORDINARY INDIVIDUAL, but because he simply applies common sense to (most) every situation. It is amazing what can happen when we strip away the litigious overreach that has engulfed our society and just apply a little common wisdom.

I received an email poll the other day, asking about Governor DeSantis and it asked for a one or two word description about him and I answered “common sense”. He’s a very smart guy, not a genius, but he simply “get’s it”, He understands people, he sees simple solutions (not politically expedient ones), and he gets things done. Early in his administration people complained about long road construction delays and problems, so he added incentives for finishing early and guess what happened? Virtually every road project come in early.

Poster 9 asked how a hurricane destroys a bridge. If you watch the videos of the tsunami in Japan, you see the power of water, the power of storm surge, over hours. We are taught in hurricane country that you “hide from the wind and run from the water…”. Reference Hurricane Katrina, the water killed people, not the wind. The Mississippi coast was destroyed by water.

I saw the Costa Ricans replace a washed-out bridge crossing a very deep gorge in three hours. Told they actually do these instant replacements regularly. I'm also told these rickety "temporary" bridges somehow last them for years under heavy traffic.

Now here's a look at leadership the way it should be done...unlike the Washington DC politicians that need weeks to validate their jobs with mountains of paperwork before the real work starts....Perfect example of why the republicans must take charge and all patronage/political appointees need to be "fired"....clear out the swamp...I'll bet the ebola czar hired by king obama is still in his/her/it office with a sizeable funding even though WE don't need it now...once they are in the taxpayer's pocketbook...they never leave...

I don't know how much it cost to repair the bridge, but I do know that if the federal government had gotten involved, it would cost 50 times as much and taken months to complete.

The state already has construction companies on the Sanibel Island bridge. Can we imagine how long it would take FEMA to get procurement to seek bids, time to bid, then award bids? Months!

Here's a contrast of two leaders standing in front of the Media in Florida after Hurricane Ian:
1. Biden speaking, "No one is going to f... with a Biden" while sniffing/touching a nearby woman's hair/face and ignoring Governor DeSantis, who is speaking at a podium about what is being done for Hurricane Ian relief.
2. Governor DeSantis: Serious, conscientious and desiring to help Floridians get back on their feet after many losing family members, homes and businesses. (rebuilding a bridge in record time.) A manly man.
Two leaders: One a self-absorbed, corrupt demented joker.
Another, a man who cares, protects and loves his State.

Dontcha love it when the gadflies stick with the historical meaning of a word that involved killing one in every ten soldiers as punishmen? Get into a current dictionary.
The first problem is that even if decimate did refer to the practice of killing one of every ten soldiers in Roman times, it did so in the service of Latin, not English. We have many words in English that are descended from Latin but which have changed their meaning in their travels. We no longer think of sinister as meaning “on the left side,” even though that was one of the word’s meanings when it existed in Latin.
Another problem with insisting that decimate should have but a single meaning is that very few words in English retain but a single meaning. An enormous percentage of the items in our vocabulary are capable of semantic multitasking. When a person uses a tricky word such as when, a, person, use, tricky, or word, all of which have multiple meanings, we use context to understand the speaker’s intent. So it is with decimate:
This has a great deal to say about the linguistic hobbyists who try to hang on to the ancient Latin meaning:

sheesh...not belittling what he has done by any means, 5600miles of roads cleared, 90%+ power restored, 99% of water/power/communication to medical and senior centers back up and running, even had 500 generators running key traffic signals as the roads cleared so traffic could resume. We may well see that this was the BEST Hurricane response in history.
He makes a great governor, might make a great president...someday.
still...the "replaced the whole bridge" story is an exaggeration, most of it was intact, the integuments were stable...one short segment between the shore integument and the 1st pilings had folded, and was repaired in record time. He expedited approvals to have it done, the inspections, engineering and waivers necessary to allow it to be done, made it "Job One" for FDOT and allowed 100 guys, trucks, equip and materials to be fast tracked to make it happen. 1st crossings were food for Publix, soon to be followed by trash haulers and likely a drumchipper to remove all debris. There were nearly 100 cars stuck/blocking that road with people who were trying to evacuate too late and got trapped when the bridge closed, they all got gassed up and sent home. The levee/road they were on was high enough they didn't get flooded.
FWIW...still no word from/about my 92yo mother, 62 yo brother both of whom were in Ft Meyers. It may just be they are in an area that still has no power/communications. They had generators and gear, lots of hurricane experience, 5 rental homes plus their primary residences.

Gov. DeSantis impresses me more and more every day. Waiting for Mary Pete to emerge from wherever it is he stashes himself to declare that the bridge is "racist". For the media that declaration would be more newsworthy than the fact that the Governor gets things quickly for his state.

Rather than split hairs about whether the bridge was replaced (media reports) or only a portion of it, there is now a whole working temporary bridge so that Pine Island is no longer isolated. If DeSantis hadn’t acted expeditiously, would they still be fussing about permits, who should get the contract, etc., etc., etc. There has to be a strong leader. Common sense tells us they don’t do it themselves, but the same common sense tells us that without strong get it done leadership, little happens, and nothing this fast.
I am far more concerned about #31’s relatives. I hope that by now hehas heard that they are safe.

Just to provide some hope to #31, it was very difficult to communicate after Hurricane Ike that hit the Texas coast. We had a landline that worked for a while after we found an old phone in the garage that did not require batteries or electricity. Then when FEMA came in, they commandeered all the cell phone towers for their emergency use. No one could make calls. And we are 80 miles from the coast.
Hope you get good news soon.
