Julie Powell, the food writer best known for her wildly popular memoir “Julie & Julia,” has died suddenly at the age of 49. The best-selling author passed away at her home in Olivebridge, New York, last Wednesday after going into cardiac arrest, according to the New York Times. She is survived by her husband, brother and parents. Powell became a literary sensation in 2005 following the release of “Julie & Julia: 365 Days, 524 Recipes, 1 Tiny Apartment Kitchen” — a humorous account of her attempt to re-create every recipe from Julia Child’s classic cookbook “Mastering the Art of French Cooking.”

I'm troubled, as I look at obituaries this year, to see way too many young people dying 'unexpectedly.' When Life Insurance companies file their annual reports for 2022, if claims are unexpectedly high, they will offer some explanations. Are more young people dying? If so, why? (Life insurance actuaries have to be highly skilled at predicting death rates - they have to be.) I'm waiting to read those reports.

I'm sorry to hear she passed away at a relatively young age. It's worth noting Julia Child ate all those rich, creamy foods, plus meats and breads of all sorts, and lived into her 90s.

All Is Well! You might remember that phrase as being yelled by Chip Diller of "Animal House" as utter chaos erupted around him. Well, the media critic Bill Goodykoontz of the Arizona Republic also sounds like Diller with his assurances that all is well with the very very slow vote count in Arizona while declaring the long delay is perfectly normal on Saturday in "No, national media, vote counting in Arizona isn't 'messy,' no matter what Kari Lake says."

Mike Pence has admitted he was angry at Donald Trump when the then-president accused him of cowardice and set the mob on him on January 6, describing Trump's actions as 'reckless'. Pence, who served as Trump's vice president, told ABC News in his first television interview since the riot that Trump 'decided to be part of the problem'. On January 6 Pence, who refused Trump's demands to overturn the 2020 election, was inside the Capitol when it was breached. The mob erected a gallows with a noose outside the building, and Pence was at one point only 40 feet from the invaders.

Michele Swinick was an election judge in Maricopa County on election day last week. Following the election Michele stepped forward to discuss what she experienced in Maricopa County on Election Day. Michele worked at a center in a heavily Republican district. According to Michele, the tabulators worked perfectly well the night before the election. Then on Election Day they quit working. Only 1 in 10 ballots were accepted through the tabulators. The officials were told to put the defective ballots into a different section called “Door 3.”

With the House race remaining uncalled, discussions have emerged on both sides of the aisle regarding who should be the next speaker. On the right, the discussions have naturally centered largely around current House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, a Republican. But on the left, the discussions have centered around someone else altogether — outgoing Rep. Liz Cheney, also a Republican, albeit one who just got voted out of office this election cycle (not that House rules require the speaker to be in Congress). The idea appears to be the brainchild of Jennifer Rubin, a Washington Post columnist who for most of her career was a staunch Republican, but who completely flipped positions

Is the gubernatorial race in Arizona over? Not quite, but the fat lady is warming up. After four straight days of promises from certain analysts that heavy Republican ballot drops were going to arrive and save the day, Sunday’s results were again underwhelming. While Republican Kari Lake did win the overall vote in the Maricopa County (the largest and most important) batch, it wasn’t by the margin she needed to eliminate the gap. (Tweet) When you look at the outstanding ballots, it’s very unlikely that enough votes for Lake exist to put her over the top. Deep blue Pima County still has 38,000 left while Maricopa County has 94,000.

Called by the Associated Press on Sunday, Chavez-DeRemer won her race in Oregon’s 5th U.S. Congressional District, beating out Democrat Jamie McLeod-Skinner. Per the Associated Press (AP): Chavez-DeRemer’s victory makes her the first Latina congresswoman from Oregon, a distinction also sought by 6th District Democratic candidate Andrew Salinas. That race remained too early to call. The district was previously held for seven terms by moderate Democrat Rep. PHILADELPHIA—Call it “the White Wave.” A flood of white envelopes containing mail-in ballots lofted Democrat candidates to victories in several key Nov. 8 races. Case in point: Democrat John Fetterman will occupy Pennsylvania’s coveted U.S. Senate seat instead of Republican Dr. Mehmet Oz. In that race—and several others—mail-in ballots acted as a breaker against the “Red Wave” of wins that Republican leaders had hoped would wash across the nation at a time when Congress and the White House are both Democrat-controlled.

The election last week defied reality. For example, John Fetterman, the Democrat who won the U.S. Senate race in Pennsylvania, promised more inflationary spending, more lenient treatment of felons amid a violent crime wave and more of the left’s radical, parent-dissing sexual agenda. Yet he won. Do you really believe that a majority of Pennsylvanians voted for a stroke-damaged, hard-core leftist who comes across as a professional wrestling villain? Celebrity doctor Mehmet Oz was not the strongest Republican candidate and was perceived by many as a RINO.
