My goodness, that is embarrassing to watch!
Not only are the officers out of shape and have no idea how to fight, but they lose their batons and fall all over the sidewalk.
To make things worse, their use of appropriate force is limited by all the policies Los Angeles has implemented to try to correct the systematic racism that’s apparently rampant in every police department across the nation.

Poorly trained fat men. Those batons should have been aimed at shins and the side of knees. I've never been through police baton training but spent some time listening to a coworker who went through reserve officer training for KCMO PD years ago, same training as all officers got. Side of knee and shin strikes played prominently in his training, and elbow strikes. The intent was to stun a limb into ineffectiveness through joint strikes, and the shin strike, even a moderate one can cause excruciating pain.
Stupid fools to drop their batons and take up the street fighting approach of the troublemaker. This is what you get when you have badly trained and badly led, out of shape fatsos for police.

Re OP - because they are told that if they shoot an unarmed black man for ANY reason they will go to prison, to a high degree of certainty. This is what officers face today in Dem hellholes like LA.

Cops across the country are overweight and undertrained in combatives. Which just leads to escalation of force.

Those two blubberbutts are an embarrassment to law enforcement in general, and the LAPD in particular.

Face shields down. Followed by two streams of industrial strength Mace and/or pepper spray. If you can stop a big bear, you should be able to stop a big fool. When you look at the video footage it is frightening. All that manpower to take down one unarmed individual. Until citizens respect, and unfortunately fear the power of LE, this will never stop.

The two officers were not operating as a team. Training comes into question fo the LAPD.
In addition, prior to the passage of the Americans With Dusabilitiies Act, weight limits could be enforced, as well as overall physical condition..

Yeah, these guys need to hit the gym but it's possible the man was high on something that made him impervious to pain. I had a family member who was a cop. He and two other officers tried to take down a crazed crack head. The other officers were incapacitated so he drew his firearm and fired twice striking the man in the chest with no effect and the man came at him. He emptied the rest of the magazine into the man who went down and managed to get back up. It was a head shot that finally brought him down. This family member was so traumatized by the events of that day that he left the force, became a heavy drinker and eventually committed suicide.

they did eventually tazer him...but two other cars had already arrived, three more on the way, and a helo over head..
Helpful hint...spend more time training than you do shaving your head to LOOK like a badass.

I refuse to condemn or ridicule the officers without knowing the limitations of policy. They successfully kept the man contained until further assistance was available. I'm thankful neither of the officers were hurt.

This is so sad. I'm embarrassed for what the LAPD has become. My father was LAPD beginning with Chief Parker in 1947, retiring in 1976; TK was on the force from 1969 until 1994. We knew after the Rodney King riot that the city was doomed. My dad was so handsome in his uniform! He was 6'3", good looking (if I may say so myself), tan and fit. All of his cop friends were fit and they all played golf. (TK was a looker back in the day, too!) The weight standards were rigorous and the guys were weighed-in at roll call every month...in front of everybody. I was a morning watch Record Clerk (Central Division, downtown) for the Department from 1974 to 1978. That's where I met TK.
The LAPD in the 1960's was known as the best police department in the United States and in the world. It was also the first target of the communist Left. I can't remember the details, I was a young teenager at the time in the late 1960's, when the Department was subject to a court ordered consent degree regarding the handling of suspects during arrests. I remember my father and mother talking about it at the dinner table. My dad was very angry and predicted terrible repercussions to the business of policing. He knew the price was going to be paid by civilians, the public. He had wanted to put in 30 years for the full pension, but just couldn't do it and pulled the pin at 28+ years. Some days I think he and his pals, Jack Webb and Chief Parker must weep in heaven.

Well this was 2 fat guys suppose it had been 2 small women?
Police standards for healthy strong men has gone by the wayside. Now they have to hire whoever passes the entrance exam.

I am a veteran of 33 yrs with the LAPD. This is most embarrassing and unfortunately indicative of the state of the Department.

I suspect they did as they were trained. Stall until overwhelming force arrives.
It is not their fault that no young fit men want to sign up for their miserable job.
These older officers are just trying to make it to early retirement in one piece.

When a law enforcement officer is confronted an offender who is resisting arrest, it's no time for the Marquess of Queensbury rules. Those inexperienced (and foolish) cops at one point dropped their batons and tried boxing with the offender.
The LEO should use whatever force is necessary. Clout him with the baton, taze him, double-team him -- a firearm shouldn't be necessary, but don't try hand to hand fighting.

They are using appropriate force for the situation. 2 police officers should be able to handle 1 unarmed suspect WITHOUT using guns. But when it's obvious that they can't why aren’t they pulling their firearm out?
