LEE COUNTY, Fla. — The morning after Hurricane Ian made landfall in Florida brought with it grim news.
“We have fatalities in the hundreds,” said Lee County Sheriff Carmine Marceno on “Good Morning America,” according to Fox News. GMA reported that Marceno does not yet have an exact number. Florida Emergency Management has not yet issued a formal announcement on injuries or lives lost during the storm.
“This is a life-changing event for all of us. We tracked that storm up the coast of Florida. It was very unpredictable,” Marceno said, according to GMA.
Ian made landfall near Cayo Costa, Florida, an island that is part of Lee County,

Of course he backtracks after live GMA interview with Stephanopolis and says he can’t confirm the numbers. This is democrat senate candidate Val Demings district.
UPDATE: Speaking on the program after the interview, Co-anchor George Stephanopolous said GMA had reached back out to the sheriff following his remarks and Marceno said that he can't confirm the numbers.
The sheriff of Lee County, Florida, told "Good Morning America" on Thursday morning that deaths from the storm in the area were in the hundreds.
"We have fatalities in the hundreds," Sheriff Carmine Marceno said, although noting he couldn't confirm specific numbers.

They really shouldn't report something like this if there is no way to confirm it. That headline is being blared as 'Breaking News' on many websites.

My nephew and his girlfriend live in Estero which is in Lee County. I offered him a place here in metro ATL but he declined. I’m feeling a bit sick right now. I hope my sister hears from him soon.

They can't even get into many areas yet to count fatalities until the storm passes through but if people live in areas where the elevation is three or four feet above sea level, fatalities are guaranteed. The only thing to do to save yourself is go to higher ground and further north. I like brave people but fighting a big storm like this goes beyond brave into the category of not too smart.

#2, could this be part of an effort to make DeSantis look bad?
I’ve been through too many hurricanes to remember and if the fatalities are truly that high, it is because people ignored the governor and refused to evacuate.

I hope it's not true either but Fox has been repeating his assertion and if he lied or exaggerated - oh boy- what a disgrace. How the heck can you even make such a statement less than 24 hours after Ian has barely left your area? Sheriffs can be very political and this guy make be the SW Florida version of the sheriff from Texas wanting to charge Gov DeSantis for the flight to Martha's Vineyard.

DeSantis presser just ended said those reports were based on people making 911 calls due to rising water in homes. They are responding to those locations to render aid as required. He only reported two unconfirmed deaths that have not been officially linked to the storm. He’s in top of this 20-30,000 responders heading in right now. He told gawkers to stay away and let rescuers do their jobs.

Right now there are 35,000 bucket trucks from 46 states ready to restore power as soon as the winds drop below 35, making it safe for the lineman to do their work. God bless them all, everyone of them.

Unpredictable, Sheriff? Seemed to be following the track predicted over at least the past week. 100+ MPH winds, tidal surges, and torrential rains were no surprise. What's your point?

Number 9, aren't you domiciled somewhere in that area? Sincerely hope that you and your property came through without major scathing.

Although we're barely into the recovery period after the hurricane, as of this moment, there are two confirmed fatalities due to Ian.

I didn't see #14's reply in time, but to answer, here on the Gulf Coast of Northern Pinellas County in our little Greek sponging and fishing village, we're okay. We're also very lucky, feeling blessed. A direct hit from Ian would have cost me my home for certain. We're still very concerned for our fellow Floridians to the south and east of us. They got hit by an immense disaster. We all know it could happen to any of us, any year.

Omigosh, #17, thank you!! You are talking about Tarpon Springs, right? My son and DIL live there, but evacuated further inland. I was worried about what they would come home to. Thank God, and bless you for being His messenger to me.

Last night the mayor of Sarasota said there were 'many' 911 calls on hold needing assistance during the storm. My suggestion for the next time. Tell those who dont see the need to evacuate to write their name and SSN on the palm of their hand in case they needed to be identified. Why would they expect someone to come rescue them in the middle of the storm.

Glad to be the bearer of good news for #18. Yes, Hazymac is coming to you live from Tarpon Springs. Last night I didn't ever lose power. The storm surge never got here. (I've lived here since October 1982.) I heard that people thirty miles south in St. Petersburg had power outages and more vicious wind. That makes sense because they were that much closer to the storm than we were. The farther south or east you go, the more storm damage you encounter. We were prepared for it, but it went the other way.

It’s now 3pm in Florida and we have 5 reported fatalities. Tragic but no where near the hundreds mentioned by that sheriff. He is either grossly irresponsible or a Democrat hack trying to make Florida (and our governor) look bad.

The storm jumped from cat 3 to cat 4 very quickly. Many felt that they could ride out a cat 3 or lower and stayed.
