Goodbye, Fort Hood: Austin approves plan
to nix Confederate names from U.S. military bases

Original Article

Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin on Thursday signed off on a plan to strip any mention of the Confederacy from U.S. military bases, including renaming the Army’s legendary Fort Bragg and Fort Hood, signing off on a process that critics said was a prime example of “woke” attitudes in President Biden’s Pentagon. Mr. Austin, whose endorsement of the plan was widely expected, said the changes would be implemented “as soon as possible.” The report that recommends the stripping of all references to Confederate figures arrived at Mr. Austin’s desk 18 months after Congress mandated a Naming Commission to review the issue.

I still want to know how General Austin "earned" a SILVER STAR in Iraq as an ASSISTANT DIVISION COMMANDER. Care to tell us, General, what Rambo-like acts of derring-do "won" you our nation's THIRD-HIGHEST award for exceptional VALOR in actual COMBAT? Or should we just call you Affirmative-Action Austin?

I am the product of a family with strong Army roots on both sides: West Point, Green Berets, an Army surgeon in WWI and three Army Air Corps aviators in WWII. I am also the wife of a former submariner and USNA grad who is the son of a sailor who fought in the Pacific for over three years and suffered several wounds. My children have served in war zones and I am a serious Civil War scholar with ancestors who fought on both sides. Although a descendant of New Englanders on my father’s side my respect for Southern bravery and pride is immense. All this and yet I believe it is past time to change the names of these bases. Many wars have been fought since 1865 and many valorous American patriots have emerged. It is understandable that a large percentage of our black soldiers would take exception to serving on bases named for those who fought to keep their ancestors in bondage.

#5, Thank you for that reminder. Communists and/or totalitarians always destroy a country’s history. It’s part of the plan. When there is no physical evidence, people tend to forget. Even evidence of people or places good or bad are learning experiences. If they are not there, the story goes away and then it is replaced with their version of history. We learn from our history and that means we learn from the good and bad. This administration is following the communist playbook to a T. You will believe what we tell you. It is very disheartening to witness wokeness take hold in our military. This goes to show the power of the illegal cabal that has stolen their way into power. They could not do it by force, so they did an end run around our entire election process, and Republicans and the silence of the judiciary let them.

Oh ... yeah ... this will bring us all together. This type of madness has to stop! Constantly changing names of buildings, roads, mountains, lakes, etc. to appease the hurt feelings of a small, "woke" minority of 5% does not help anyone. It is utter nonsense simply because --- if someone tries hard enough --- they can get their bowels in an uproar over anything. Being half Irish, I resent New York City is named after the Duke of York --- the future King James II, a Brit --- when we all know the Irish were treated as bad as slaves and for a longer period. Why not change America's biggest city to New Fitzgerald City to make my Old Sod ancestors happy? With all due respect to the few who think this is a good idea, including some on this site: it will never end! And --- for the curious --- many of these Confederate men didn't own slaves at all and after the war they played a role in conquering the West. Oh wait! The Indians ... sorry "Indigenous People" .... hate whites too. Wipe out your history and respect for your ancestors and YOU become nothing.

You don't need to name forts after people. Doing so is bound to insult somebody, somewhere, eventually. (For example, a lot of people would object to "Fort Sherman," and I mean a LOT of people.) Stick with positive, uplifting ideas for names, like "Fort Aspiration," "Fort Equity," "Fort Rainbow," "Fort Charity," etc.

Re: #7: While I admire families with a strong heritage of military service, I take exception to your characterization of Confederate soldiers as fighting to keep blacks in bondage. My gr-grandfather, not 4 or 5 greats but my grandmother's dad, fought on the side of his state, Louisiana. He did this not in support of slavery but because as a native Choctaw married to a white woman, the only state he could find that would allow him to own the land that he cleared and farmed, was Louisiana. Until the British ceded British West Florida (parts of Mississippi, Alabama, and Louisiana, they allowed native families to own land and keep their homes. That changed after the U.S. government took over and began Indian removal of the Civilized Tribes. This was followed by carpet baggers who were too lazy to clear and farm their own land, so they waited like Vultures until Yankee troops created some "vacancies." The Confederate officers who rode up to my gr-grandfather's place in Rapides Parish on horseback, were the first white people to ever ask my gr-grandfather for anything. Before that, they told him what to do, took what they wanted, and put most of his Choctaw relatives on the Trail of Tears death march to Oklahoma. Those were Yankee soldiers by the way. They took the land settled by the Cherokee and Choctaw in the Appalachian foothills, confiscated their belongings, and squatted in their newly emptied homes. Every generation since has sent their menfolk off to war, both world wars, Korea, Vietnam, and the Mid East, under the Stars and Stripes. My father served in WWII, Korea, and multiple tours in Vietnam. Many who went off to war failed to return home as they were KIA. I find equating participation as a Confederate soldier to perpetuating slavery to not only be historically inaccurate but offensive, just as what Austin its doing is offensive. It was Austin's own party - the party of many blacks today - that was for perpetuating slavery. Funny how no one calls for elimination of the democrat party name, while denouncing Ft. Hood and other installations named after former democrats.

Often, I derive inspiration for my writing from songs — certain titles or lyrics just seem to wander into my brain and jangle around it until I find a way (and the time) to sort them out on the page. Ringo Starr’s “It Don’t Come Easy” has been doing just that of late (not the lyrics, just the title) as it relates to the concept of change — particularly changing minds. I’ve been thinking a lot about political discourse — how fractious and perilous it most always seems to be. Hunter Biden’s financial dealings and overseas exploits uncovered on the infamous laptop exposed by The Post could possibly be used by prosecutors in their reported tax crimes case against him. When federal authorities kicked off their probe in 2018, investigators were initially looking at whether Hunter and his associates had violated various tax and money laundering laws amid their dealings in China and other foreign countries. While it’s not clear exactly what evidence the feds have, the exploits of President Biden’s 52-year-old son are also in the scope of the federal Foreign Agents Registration Act (FARA).

Google, which insists party affiliation plays no role in determining which emails get sent to the spam folder, launched an FEC-approved program to ensure campaign emails reached users’ main inboxes under pressure from Republicans. But the RNC, which shared data from its email campaigns with Fox News Digital, says this has not resolved the situation, with masses of emails getting spammed by Google at the end of every month.

Some Chicago Marathon runners are feeling a little blue heading into this weekend’s race. One of the biggest events of the year for the sport followed Boston and London with the creation of a nonbinary division for runners who don’t identify as male or female. The lack of hype around the new inclusive division left some of those who identify as such with a bad taste in their mouths. According to the Chicago Sun-Times, there was no major announcement to coincide with the division. "Personally, it feels hurtful because it feels performative, or brushed under the rug, because it really is a big deal," Cal Calamia told the newspaper

New York City Mayor Eric Adams declared a state of emergency Friday in response to the continued arrival of illegal migrants from southern states. More than 17,000 migrants have been bused to the city since the spring, a small fraction of the migrant encounters at the border over that timeframe. Fox News cameras at the Port Authority transportation terminal filmed eight buses arriving Friday, after nine arrived Thursday. Adams said that one in five people in the city's shelter system is a migrant, which is creating the "crisis." "This is a humanitarian crisis that started with violence and instability in South America and is being accelerated by American political dynamics,"

President Joe Biden kicked off a speech on the economy Friday with a classic brain-freeze moment. “Let me start off with two words — Made in America,” he said, using three words in front of a sign that read “Made in America.” “Made in America,” he repeated, without correcting his mistake. “That’s not hyperbole, I’m not joking about that as you know.” The president spoke at the Volvo Group Powertrain Operations, Hagerstown, Maryland. It’s not the first time that Biden has struggled with the basics of the English language.

Washington–The Defense Department is shelling out $21 million on what critics argue seems to be the BIden military’s most pressing issue–renaming bases that offend the left. In 90 days, nine Army bases long named for Confederate generals will “immediately” begin swapping to more palatable-to-the-woke-crowd labels such as “Fort Liberty”–in a move that will cost more than $21 million. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin on Thursday ordered the Army to begin renaming nine bases selected for the change by an independent commission after a congressionally mandated 90-day wait period expires. “I fully support the efforts and recommendations of the Naming Commission on this important
