Florida Republicans are continuing to grow their advantage over Democrats in the Sunshine State, now besting them by over 260,000 voters statewide, Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) announced on Tuesday.
Speaking from Fort Myers this week, DeSantis highlighted the shift the Sunshine State has experienced in terms of voter registration in the last few years.
Roughly four years ago, when DeSantis was running for governor against Andrew Gillum, “there were like 275,000 more Democrats than Republicans in the state of Florida,” the governor said, noting that Florida never had more registered Republicans than Democrats in the state’s history.

King Charles III delivered his first address Friday as the monarch of England following the death of his mother, Queen Elizabeth II.
“I speak to you today with feelings of profound sorrow,” the King said in a video stream from Buckingham Palace.
“Throughout her life, Her Majesty The Queen – my beloved Mother – was an inspiration and example to me and to all my family, and we owe her the most heartfelt debt any family can owe to their mother,” he continued. In the speech, the King gave his son William, the new heir to the throne, the title of Prince of Wales

Shares of Smith & Wesson Brands Inc. were down Friday morning after the company said demand for its guns returned to pre-pandemic levels.
The firearms maker on Thursday had reported net sales to $84.4 million for its fiscal first quarter, a decrease of 69% from the same time last year. Smith & Wesson Chief Executive Officer Mark Smith blamed the "challenging" quarter on the return to normal demand levels and the company needing to correct inventory levels. "The industry experienced our first normal summer slowdown in three years," Smith said in a press release. Additionally, he said manufacturer orders were "artificially depressed" as the company's partners sold through existing inventories.

North Korea has passed a new law declaring itself a nuclear weapons state in a move leader Kim Jong Un says is "irreversible."
Kim vowed the country would "never give up" its nuclear weapons and said there could be no negotiations on denuclearization as he hailed the passage of the law, North Korean state media reported Friday.
The new law also enshrines Pyongyang's right to use preemptive nuclear strikes to protect itself -- updating a previous stance under which it had said it would keep its weapons only until other countries denuclearized and would not use them preemptively against non-nuclear states.

Teddy Roosevelt’s daughter Alice once said that he was “the bride at every wedding, the corpse at every funeral.” No matter what was going on, he always wound up the center of attention.
The same could be said for former President Donald Trump. No matter what’s going on, he somehow seems to wind up driving the conversation. (Several years ago, when I wrote a column for another newspaper having nothing to do with Trump — I was writing about the theory, popular in Silicon Valley, that our universe is just a computer simulation like a giant version of The Sims — the editors added a reference to Trump

Steve Bannon was arrested on Thursday on money laundering and conspiracy charges stemming from a fundraising scheme to build a wall on the Southern border. Bannon, who is the self-proclaimed leader of the “MAGA grassroots movement,” surrendered himself in New York City to prosecutors following the indictment. Apparently, New York AG Letecia James wasn’t satisfied, though. Later in the day, after Bannon had turned himself in, he was put in chains and perp walked down a long line of prepositioned media for his arraignment.Forgive me for not giving James, who has shown herself to be a partisan hack over the years, the benefit of the doubt here. Everything about this appears

… not Democrat women angry over abortion. It’s not independents unhappy with Donald Trump. If Philip Bump’s analysis for the Washington Post is correct, the most enthusiastic demo in this cycle may have been broadly overlooked by prognosticators this summer.
Because the most enthusiastic demo this fall is Republican men (via David Strom, who will join us next week):
On Tuesday, I looked at the growing murmurs that American women in particular are going to flood the polls in the wake of the Supreme Court’s decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization. Protecting access to abortion in the wake of the dismantling of Roe v. Wade quickly became a rallying

As we previously reported, there are indications that the Senate may be moving in the direction of the Republicans in some of the critical races, particularly after Biden’s student debt bailout proclamation. In Georgia, Herschel Walker has taken the lead in some polls. Republican Blake Masters, who started far behind Sen. Mark Kelly (D-AZ) in Arizona, is gaining ground and is now only three points behind. Dr. Mehmet Oz is also gaining on John Fetterman as well, as Fetterman’s issues become more apparent.
Now, there’s more positive news

On Thursday, as RedState reported, Queen Elizabeth II passed away at the age of 96. She lived a life fuller than most, standing as a symbol of hope and decency for the country she represented. The British monarch served in the Auxiliary Territorial Service during World War II before taking the throne in 1952 after the death of her father. Since then, she’s been the most prolific royal since Britain’s move to a constitutional and parliamentary system. No matter one’s thoughts on the idea of having a royal family, there’s no question she was beloved by her country and many others outside it.

Queen Elizabeth II, a jeep and truck mechanic during World War II, crowned during the second premiership of Winston Churchill, was the last living link to the senior leadership of World War II, even as Mikhail Gorbachev’s passing last week represented the last link to the senior figures of the Cold War (with the partial exception of Lech Walesa, who is still with us).
I got to see the Queen once in person, in an unusual scene that I did not fully appreciate at age 14, on my first visit to London in 1971. I was among the very large crowd lining the Mall as a formal procession of the Queen,

Joe Manchin cast the deciding vote for the so-called Inflation Reduction Act, and it may end up costing him his political career if a new poll is to be believed. Manchin, who had originally pledged not to sign on to any new spending bill during the country’s current inflationary boom, suddenly switched his position at the end of July. The bill he negotiated, which cost nearly a trillion dollars, was full of wasteful green energy subsidies and payouts to special interests. It also represented a stabbing in the back of Republican senators who had trusted him to keep his word about reconciliation after voting for the CHIPS Act.

Journalists have done their best to prop up Joe Biden and the Democratic chances in 2022. But there is a sense that the liberal network newscasts are willing to throw the Democrat overboard when it comes to 2024. CBS Mornings on Thursday speculated on when is “too old to serve” for politicians. Among the individuals singled out was Biden. The network even featured a famous clip of the President verbally stumbling and looking confused.
Co-host Tony Dokoupil warned, “President Biden, already the oldest sitting president, is set to become the first president to turn 80 in office.” He continued, “President Biden has faced some of the same criticism from his political opponents.”
