A Token of the Managerial Age Bewails

I was chatting with a politically mature friend today who, in the course of some delighted words about Attorney General Merrick Garland, reminded me that in his famous “evil empire” speech of 1983, Ronald Reagan quoted a few choice lines from the preface of C. S. Lewis’ Screwtape Letters. “The greatest evil,” Lewis wrote, is not now done in any Dickensian “dens of iniquity” or even in “concentration camps and labor camps.” (snip) The reason, by the way, my friend’s words about Merrick Garland were “delighted” was because of the huge, if inadvertent, boost the attorney general has just given to Donald Trump’s political prospects. C.S. Lewis in the preface of The Screwtape Letters : “I live in the Managerial Age, in a world of "Admin." The greatest evil is not now done in those sordid "dens of crime" that Dickens loved to paint. It is not done even in concentration camps and labour camps. In those we see its final result. But it is conceived and ordered (moved, seconded, carried, and minuted) in clean, carpeted, warmed and well-lighted offices, by quiet men with white collars and cut fingernails and smooth-shaven cheeks who do not need to raise their voices. Hence, naturally enough, my symbol for Hell is something like the bureaucracy of a police state or the office of a thoroughly nasty business concern."

David Brooks is one of those white collared and cut fingernailed and smooth-shaven cheek men described in the article. A Never Trumper, always a never Trumper. Never mind that Merrick is out of control and his conflict of interest. Merrick is PO'd because he is not Black Robed, all because of Trump. It's revenge. A better man than Merrick would have recused himself.

This article turned out to be a better read than I imagined when in clicked on it. FTA: "Monday’s FBI raid on Mar-a-Lago, Trump’s Palm Beach residence, was probably the single biggest boon to his stature among voters since he left office in January 2021, bigger even than the partisan witch hunt over which future CNN hostess, Liz Cheney, has been presiding with such ostentatious zeal." I think that is a very nice summation of the effects of the government's MAL caper thus far. Since 2015, I've been a Neutral Trumper, neither worshiping nor hating but mainly watching and liking what I was seeing by and large. You see, I was well aware of Donald Trump throughout the 70s and 80s and was not impressed. During and after the raid, my neutrality and hesitancy evaporated, mainly because I absolutely hate bullies and criminals but especially criminal bullies acting under color of law, the worst kind. While I fully plan to support Trump for president, in 2024, I'm hoping that he and normal Americans are primarily focused on ousting the democrats from control of Congress. I believe that is key to the survival of the U.S. more so than who has declared for the presidency, potentially sucking the oxygen out of this November's turnout.

Liz Cheney is facing an awkward challenge. A few days from now, she will deliver the most consequential speech of her career to date. The polls indicate it will almost certainly be a concession speech. Rhetorically, the assignment is clear: Accept defeat while sounding like a winner. More specifically, Cheney needs to signal that the loss of her Wyoming House seat in a GOP primary is in no way the end of her career, but the opening of a new phase in which she intends to be one of the most important people in American political life.

I can already feel some of the eye rolls of those reading the headline above and shaking their heads in disbelief. First off, welcome, and I hope your eyes come back to their correct position and you don’t give yourself a concussion from your head shake. I would hate to feel responsible for that. Really. A stunning development on the legal front that directly impacts the so-called conspiracy theory that the death of Seth Rich was something more than routine street crime. The FBI now admits it has Seth Rich’s laptop. This information has just been posted on Lawflog.com courtesy of Ty Clevenger. According to an email posted at Lawflog.com and sent to attorney Ty Clevenger, the attorney for the FBI now admits that the "FBI has completed the initial search identifying approximately 50 cross-reference serials, with attachments totaling over 20,000 pages, in which Seth Rich is mentioned. FBI has also located leads that indicate additional potential records that require further searching. "

The State of Texas filed a lawsuit directly with the U.S. Supreme Court shortly before midnight on Monday challenging the election procedures in Georgia, Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin on the grounds that they violate the Constitution. Texas argues that these states violated the Electors Clause of the Constitution because they made changes to voting rules and procedures through the courts or through executive actions, but not through the state legislatures. You may remember the strange case of Antrim County, the very pro-Trump red county, where the voting results professed to show that Joe Biden had won by a huge amount. Well, the election officials knew something was wrong when they saw it, knowing there was no way that happened. But when they investigated, they found that somehow the votes had been switched. The Secretary of State, a Democrat tried to blame “human error” saying that an election official in the county hadn’t done an update which caused the result. But then that immediately raised several questions. Was there a problem in the system that allowed for this to happen?

I’ve spent some time reading comments to this story I wrote yesterday as well as many other legal analysts’ views on what — if anything — can be divined from the fact that Justice Samuel Alito ordered the State of Pennsylvania and other defendants to respond by December 9 to the action filed by GOP Congressman Mike Kelly seeking to declare unlawful the “no excuse” mail-in voting scheme used in the November election. The effort by the Trump Campaign to reverse the outcome of the election in Wisconsin is beginning to gain some attention — it now has my attention. Reversing Georgia, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin are necessary to call into question what will happen in the Electoral College on December 14. Following a newly-released FBI forensics report that concluded that the 64-year-old television and film star pulled the trigger on the “prop” gun that brought an end to Hutchins’ life during the filming of the western “Rust,” Baldwin played the victim by claiming that he feared that Trump would “instruct” his followers to act out violently against him after the tragic accident.

Just in case you needed yet another reason not to take the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) seriously, this story should suffice. The agency released a study on Friday recommending that people wear face masks, among other measures, to avoid catching monkeypox. The problem? The precautions the CDC suggested do not line up with what the data shows about the spread of the illness. This week’s Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR) contained research on the spread of the monkeypox virus through contaminated surfaces. The study centered on two patients who lived together and had contracted the virus.

FPU claims to be the only accredited Christian university in California’s Central Valley. “In the days since the Supreme Court overturned Roe v.
