Fewer Americans than ever say that they believe that the Bible should be taken literally, while a record number of Americans now say they view the holy book as a compilation of "fables, legends, history and moral precepts recorded by man," according to a Gallup poll.
One in five Americans surveyed said the Bible is the "actual word of God, to be taken literally," about half off from the high point in 1984. The survey also shows that as fewer Americans are ranking religion as "very important," the number of those who believe the Bible came directly from God decreases.

That's because it is... It's historical fiction that has been written and rewritten over and over and over. The Jews stole their religion from other religions, Christians stole their religion from the Jews, the Muslims copied the Christians, and on and on. Without the Roman Empire, Christianity is just another extinct religion. Without a murderous Muhammad, Islam never spreads.
That doesn't mean there isn't a creator/Cosmic force or whatever in the universe, but these religious books didn't come from a God (they came from man).
Fun fact: The virgin birth was a common theme among religions before the invention of Christianity.
Use the Bible, etc. as a guide to living a good life, but as the word from God, it's not.

I say this as a right-wing, agnostic (cultural Christian, though), why are the socialists/communists blamed for the decline of Christianity? My view is it's (Christianity) losing in the marketplace of ideas. It's losing because it's not believable, not because of the left.
Would people discard something so peaceful and beautiful if it was believable? They wouldn't... Christianity is losing because it's just not believable (in this age of science). And I hate saying that...

The scriptures are replete with accounts of kingdoms, nations and individuals that abandon the God of Israel. They inevitably go it on their own and fail. Over and over again, it convinced me that Salvation is in and through faithful adherence to His word. Mick me if you must, hardened world! I know what I know and I trust in Gid.

The bible has some fables, some legends, some wisdom and common sense, some good writing, some bad writing, some over wording, some necessary wording, and is the first book printed for general circulation among the people, giving them direct access to the word of God. The 10 commandments are a low hurdle for anyone in civilized society to learn and achieve. The Proverbs provide a lot of wisdom anyone can benefit from.

#4. Have you read the Bible? The "Ten Commandments" IS a low hurdle to read and they are impossible to obey completely. Disobeying one of the commandments is like disobeying all of them. Man is condemned to eternal death without Christ. Christianity is unlike any other religion in the world. No other doctrinal belief has at its center God in his human form willingly dying to pay for the sins of other people. Not everyone will be led to understand it. And most cannot understand it.
I recommend to you reading Mere Christianity by C.S. Lewis and then Basic Christianity by John Stott.
Until the Covid nonsense, I was a C & E Christian. I have learned much in the last two years, but it has taken reading the Bible daily with reference notes.. a Study Bible. There are several that are good. They give one understanding of terms, customs, idioms and practices from ancient times.
Peace!

Oh, how many times have the chapters of the bible been rewritten by monks sitting in cells thinking ...this would sound better... or ...this would fit the page if I just changed the wording a little... or ...I'm going to run out of ink so I'll just leave part of it out? True believers are convinced the bible is the word of God passed down through hundreds of monks unchanged, but the original writers must have been influenced by the politics of the time.

Thank you, #7.
That’s why we have to be careful of which version of the Bible we read & study, as transcribed from the original & not translated,#23. Just as we have to be careful of listening to false teachers instead of searching the scriptures daily to find whether what they say is true (Acts 17:11). Our souls are at stake.
Do you have 28:29 minutes that you are willing to give to hearing about a minor prophet of God’s warnings and pleas to His people?

The Bible book of Hosea closely parallels the condition of our beloved America today. God has blessed us beyond measure, but we have turned our backs on Him and given the fruits of our blessings to His enemies.
After all of the sinfulness we have done in turning away from Him as a nation, He still loves us and is willing to have mercy on us and forgive us, if we will repent and return to Him.
The consequences of continuing in our current direction are dire; but, the rewards of turning back to God are great, even if we must travel through “the valley of Achor” to receive them.
The choice is ours. He has already paid the terrible cost to buy us back.

Yes, this is my third comment but after reading the numerous comments from #4, I am compelled to say more. #22 beat me to it because I was going to ask the same question. I will ask it a little bit differently. Has #4 read the Bible from beginning to end?
Hopefully, an answer will be provided. A person can always talk "big" or be "full of themselves" when, in fact, they haven't even picked up the Bible to read beginning to end.

#4~ The Bible is not historical fiction. “All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness,” (2 Timothy 3:16). God does not lie.
Scholars have “carefully studied thousands of copies of the New Testament and recognized that, though minor differences exist between the copies, the books of Scripture were so faithfully recorded that no doctrine has been lost.” The Bible was written over centuries and has continuity from Genesis through Revelation. Scripture interprets Scripture.
#12~ “All nations eventually fail because of poor governance.” / Wrong. God controls the universe:
Job 12:23 - “He makes the nations great, then destroys them; He enlarges the nations, then leads them away.
Psalm 22:28 – “For the kingdom is the Lord’s, And He rules over the nations.”
#16~ “The bible has some fables, some legends,” / Chapter and verse requested.
#23~ “...chapters rewritten by monks thinking...sound better...fit page...change wording...run out of ink...omit...influenced by politics of the time” / See response to #4.

Well the idiots on the left who say we are headed for a theocracy certainly have nothing to fear from conservative leaning people.
How odd many of the comments here sound to ears that have heard and read of so much in the archeological and historical records that confirms the authenticity of much of the Bible. Of course some things we take purely on faith. But to discount the Bible as mere fiction simply betrays the anti-intellectual bent of so many modern and post-modernist individuals.
I am grateful for the faithful believers here with whom I can enjoy political and spiritual fellowship. May God bless and protect our beloved nation, and may many more come to acknowledge and honor our Creator and Savior.

Filthy movies, x rated TV, everything is OK mentality, schools & drug use out of control, parents not allowed to discipline children, liberal DA’s , judges, media & mayors, lack of manners or respect for people. it’s very sad that people appear to no longer fear God. I remember years ago foreign countries saying they will destroy the US from within. Like Rush used to say 20% of the country are liberal …they have the Big $$$, the media, the Big corporations, Hollywood , most newspapers & magazines & they think anyone who does not agree with them is wrong.

The two most important stories in the Bible do not include the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus.
The first is the seance of the woman of Endor who was able to bring up the spirit and presence of a deceased Samuel and the second is the Transfiguration. Jesus was able to bring up Moses and Elijah for consultations before his arrest by the temple guards. These two stories plus that of a risen Christ, if true, reduce the rest of the Bible to commentary.

Socialism is mankind attempting to solve the problems of man.
Communism is 'socialism on steroids', wherein the "state" becomes 'god.'
Socialism says the "state" is the source of a person's well-being,
Scripture says,
'Cursed is the man who trusts in mankind
And makes flesh his strength.' (Jeremiah 17:5a)
===
As for the Bible being a "book of myth:"
- The Holy Bible is a compilation of 66 books (made into 1,189 chapters, 31,173 verses), written by 40 different authors, of varying cultural backgrounds, educations, and professions (shepherds, fishermen, soldiers, physicians, kings), over a period of over1500 years, in many different countries across 3 continents (Asia, Africa, and Europe), written in several languages (Hebrew, Chaldean, Aramaic, Greek) all having ONE consistent, divinely-inspired message:
- Paradise Created
- Paradise Lost
- Paradise Restored
- Redemption of sinful man by a gracious and loving God.
===
-- The Bible is not a history text, yet whenever put to the test by archaeology, Scripture stands true.
-- The Bible is not a psychology book, yet no medical text has accomplished more for the human spirit than God's Word upon a willing heart.
-- The Bible is not a science dissertation, yet its proclamation of an instantaneous creation from nothing (Gen 1:1 "bara"); a destruction ("tohu wa bohu") with a restoration (aka '6-days of creation'); then coming destruction (collapsing universe); with eventual restoration (re-expansion) in a new universe is now accepted by science after the "steady-state universe theory" was debunked in the mid 1900's.
===
There is no other "religion" that grants the freedom and equality to all humanity, as does Christianity:
'There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free man, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus.' -Galatians 3:28
===
The Lord granted 12 men Apostleship for the Church Age. Each gave up all, but for robe, belt, and sandals, to go town to town proclaiming the good news of eternal life in Christ. Each would die in different places, at different times, and in different ways, but each would die penniless proclaiming God through His Son, Jesus Christ by the power of the Holy Spirit. All but John would die a martyr's death for Christ. These were deaths by:
- crucifixion
- beheading
- stoning
- hanging
- by sword, lance, or arrows
- dragged by horse
- thrown from height
- flaying alive
===
Despite such hardship, the Apostle Paul would say, 'For to me, to live is Christ, and to die is gain.' (Philippians 1:21)
