Albany, N.Y. — New York officials denied required air permit renewals Thursday to a bitcoin-mining power plant on the grounds that it was a threat to the state's climate goals. The permitting decision was another example of New York putting the brakes on a cryptocurrency bonanza that has alarmed environmentalists. It also comes at a time when cryptocurrency prices have plunged, wiping out fortunes, fueling skepticism and sparking calls for tighter scrutiny. The state's permitting decision involved Greenidge Generation, an old coal-fired plant by the shore of Seneca Lake that had once been shut down, but was converted from coal to

WASHINGTON — The Marshal of the U.S. Supreme Court has asked Maryland officials to step up the enforcement of laws she says prohibit picketing outside the homes of the justices who live in the state. “For weeks on end, large groups of protesters chanting slogans, using bullhorns, and banging drums have picketed Justices’ homes,” Marshal Gail Curley wrote in the letters to GOP Gov. Larry Hogan and Montgomery County Executive Marc Elrich, which were dated Friday. Curley wrote that both Maryland and Montgomery County laws “squarely prohibit picketing” at the justices’ homes, and she asked the officials to direct police

This week’s White House Report Card finds President Joe Biden ending another horror week, whipped repeatedly by the Supreme Court and approval polls and facing a growing fall election disaster if he doesn’t pull up soon. Democratic pollster and grader John Zogby, who likes the president, gave another subpar grade to Biden and warned of rocky shores ahead. “The president is in real trouble,” Zogby said in grading a “D.” And, he added that approval polls of Biden and his handling of the economy are “showing real dangers for him among Democratic bastions as well as independents.” Separately, Zogby's polling

In the first elections since the Supreme Court's consequential ruling overturning Roe v. Wade, Democratic participation in the primaries in Illinois, New York and elsewhere Tuesday was lower than previous midterm cycles — and pollsters say that's a bad sign for Democrats' chances in November. Compared to the 2018 midterms, where Democrats swept the House in a blue wave reaction to former President Donald Trump, the 2022 primary season has seen anemic participation from Democratic voters. That didn't change after the Supreme Court's decision on Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization Friday, which reversed 50 years of precedent recognizing a constitutional

President Biden and White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre took no questions from reporters Friday after 71 journalists signed an unprecedented letter calling for an end to the mysterious prescreening of media members let into Biden events. The president held a single public event and reporters were shooed out while he was mid-sentence, making questions impossible. Jean-Pierre did not hold a briefing and had left the West Wing by early afternoon for a personal obligation. Thursday’s letter, addressed to Jean-Pierre, requested that the White House reopen to all reporters the East Room and other large indoor event spaces that during

President Joe Biden’s top COVID adviser was forced to miss his own daughter's wedding after testing positive for the virus. Fauci, 81, who had tested positive for the virus on June 14 days after attending a class reunion, had to attend the wedding of his daughter, Megan, 31, remotely, he told The New York Times. The director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases had attended a 60th class reunion dinner ceremony at the Anthony S. Fauci Integrated Science Complex, named in his honor, at the College of the Holy Cross, in Worcester, Massachusetts. At least two other

It’s been a rocky first month for White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre. Her answers have baffled reporters, and even made some of her White House colleagues wince. She has increasingly found herself sharing the podium or splitting briefings with John Kirby, who has been taking the lead on foreign policy and at times appears to function as a co-press secretary. And Republicans have zeroed in on her as a useful punching bag. Jean-Pierre officially took the podium in May, becoming the first Black and openly LGBTQ woman to hold a position long dominated by white men and women. She

President Joe Biden is not so popular in Massachusetts, according to the results of a new poll. A MassINC poll released Thursday found that of 1,002 state residents surveyed this month, 45 percent said they have a favorable view of the commander-in-chief, while 39 percent indicated they hold an unfavorable view. Fourteen percent of other respondents said they were undecided about their view of the Democratic president. One percent declined to answer. Still, Biden is more likable in the Bay State than his 2020 opponent, former President Donald Trump, who carries a 28 percent favorability rating, with the vast majority

A visitor was gored by a bison in Yellowstone National Park on Wednesday. It was the second such attack in the park in three days. The tourist, a 71-year-old woman from West Chester, Pennsylvania, reportedly approached the animal by accident while she and her daughter returned to their car after hiking near the park's central lake, according to the National Park Service. The bull, or male, bison then charged. (Snip) On Monday, startling video footage captured a bison charging at, and then goring, a Yellowstone visitor. That attack happened as a 34-year-old man from Colorado Springs, Colorado, and his family

Vermont Sen. Patrick Leahy is suffering a broken hip as a result of a fall at his McLean, Virginia, house on Wednesday night. In a statement, the 82-year-old Democrat's office said that he would undergo surgery to repair the hip on Thursday morning. "Having been born blind in one eye, the senator has had a lifelong struggle with reduced depth perception. He has taken some remarkable dingers over the years but this one finally caught up with him," Leahy's office said. Doctors determined the best course of action would be to have surgery "as soon as possible," his office said.
