Sacramento police announced an arrest Monday connected with the shooting that killed six people and wounded a dozen others in the heart of California’s capital city as at least two shooters fired more than 100 rounds and people ran for their lives. Police said they booked Dandre Martin, 26, as a “related suspect" on charges of assault with a deadly weapon and being a convict carrying a loaded gun. Detectives and SWAT team members found one handgun during searches of three homes in the area. The arrest came as the six victims killed were identified in the shooting.

The problem never seems to go away. (snip) Secretary Janet Yellen sent a stern letter to Congress this month stating that if Congress doesn’t act quickly, she would need to take “extraordinary measures” (snip) To lower spending, lawmakers will have to consider cutting benefits in Social Security and Medicare, which make up most of the budget. Without reform of these programs, a continued increase in government borrowing will hold back economic growth. It’s time to end the borrowing debate and address the underlying cause of the problem.

Chicago voters knew they were getting someone tough in Lori Lightfoot, a former federal prosecutor and early 2018 entrant to the mayor’s race. She yearned to take on Rahm Emanuel — his record, his backers, his money, his power. It wasn’t until he made the surprise announcement he would not seek reelection that the field of candidates blew open with the less brave — a half-dozen other mayoral hopefuls who jumped in only when the well-financed incumbent jumped out. What voters didn’t know is that they also were getting in Lori Lightfoot someone with a tendency toward the thin-skinned, the defensive, the short-tempered.

The last straw, for Leslie Hawkins, was her mother’s 93rd-birthday gathering in 2018. Her mother, Mary E. Harrison, had long contended with multiple health problems, including diabetes and the nerve pain it can cause; high blood pressure; anxiety; and some cognitive decline. She was prone to falling. Still, she had been a sociable, churchgoing nonagenarian until Hawkins, who cared for her in their shared home in Takoma Park, Maryland, began seeing disturbing changes. “She was out of it,” “She couldn’t hold a conversation or even finish a sentence (snip) Hawkins had brought a list of the 14 medications Harrison was taking

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi dismissed Catholic bishops who do not believe she should receive Communion due to her views on abortion. "I think I can use my own judgment on that but I'm pleased with what the Vatican put out on that subject. Did you read that?" Pelosi, D-Calif., told a reporter at her weekly press conference. "It basically says don't be divisive on the subject. Thank you," Pelosi said before exiting the conference. The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops will convene for a national meeting next month, with plans to vote on drafting guidelines for Communion.

U.S. border agents in recent months arrested two Yemeni men on a terror watchlist in separate incidents as they crossed the border with Mexico illegally, Customs and Border Protection (CBP) announced on Monday. The men, arrested in January and March near a port of entry in California, were on a U.S. government watchlist for terrorism suspects and a "no-fly" list, CBP said in a press release. A group of Republican lawmakers that visited the border in El Paso, Texas, in March said border agents told them during the trip that some people caught crossing the border were on a U.S. terrorism watchlist.
