Congress must consider cuts in Medicare

The problem never seems to go away. (snip) Secretary Janet Yellen sent a stern letter to Congress this month stating that if Congress doesn’t act quickly, she would need to take “extraordinary measures” (snip) To lower spending, lawmakers will have to consider cutting benefits in Social Security and Medicare, which make up most of the budget. Without reform of these programs, a continued increase in government borrowing will hold back economic growth. It’s time to end the borrowing debate and address the underlying cause of the problem.

Comments:

What an incredible liberal loon. Why punish people who have worked all their life? How about cutting all aid to anyone not in this country legally? Etc.

This is amazing but not surprising. I believe it was Larry Kudlow who stated on FOX Business that do not think big government won’t USE Social Security to twist recipients arms to do what they want or get any extra money they want. Federal employee cuts for big shots like Yellen never happen. Why do we voters never make that an issue?

Both SS and Medicare are enormous Ponzi schemes, dependent in large part upon a large ratio of workers to retirees to cover these welfare plans. At the time of the enactment of SS, I believe FDR had a ratio of 135 workers contributing payroll taxes to cover the handful of retirees. And since the life expectancy of retirees in the 1950s-1970s was less than the actuarial assumption for average death of 65 years, funding wasn’t a problem. However, with far better medical care and a massive federal effort to end smoking, the life expectancy of men and women has greatly exceeded their presumed deaths. So, a far smaller ratio of workers contributing tax dollars to fund retirees who are living 15 to 20 years longer than anyone expected. Thus, a financial disaster that may be impossible to fix without enormous payroll tax increases, a large increase in initial retirement age, a freeze in benefits and even great cuts in medical payments to doctors and hospitals. Both of these welfare programs plus Medicaid have enormous costs, yet any attempt to reduce the benefits and/or raise the costs will be met with ugly protests and dire consequences. Everyone wants to benefit from Ponzi schemes and everyone wants to be the first investor to pull out. Ponzi was smarter than that.

And, by all means, expand Medicare eligibility like Bernie the Socialist desires. Of course, they will simply raise the max limit on SS taxes to something like 500,000 instead of the $120,000-ish it is currently.

Excuse 2nd post, but I believe the current ratio of workers to retirees is down to approximately 3 to 1 as FDR’s Ponzi scheme unravels. This ratio presents the classic socialist problem of how to pay for something when you’ve taken all the money.

And another thing- while paying into those programs (half and half employer) too many people come to look at SS as their main retirement program, when it was set up to be a mere supplement. And Medicare has become the budget-devouring monster conservatives warned us about long ago. Congress is to blame, but so are we.

Chicago voters knew they were getting someone tough in Lori Lightfoot, a former federal prosecutor and early 2018 entrant to the mayor’s race. She yearned to take on Rahm Emanuel — his record, his backers, his money, his power. It wasn’t until he made the surprise announcement he would not seek reelection that the field of candidates blew open with the less brave — a half-dozen other mayoral hopefuls who jumped in only when the well-financed incumbent jumped out. What voters didn’t know is that they also were getting in Lori Lightfoot someone with a tendency toward the thin-skinned, the defensive, the short-tempered.
