Philadelphia police are facing questions after releasing mixed messages on an armed 12-year-old boy who was fatally shot in the back by officers on Tuesday, with the police commissioner claiming he was armed and fired at police but her deputy later saying he wasn't sure if he'd done so. Police identified the boy as Thomas Siderio Jr., saying officers took him to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center where he was pronounced dead a few minutes after the shooting. Officers said that Siderio was white.(Snip)In a statement Wednesday, police said the four officers wearing plainclothes were in an unmarked car in south Philadelphia at about 7:20 p.m.

Used to be that if a suspect was running away, all you did was chase him down. Now they are too fat to do that so they shoot the suspect instead. And they wonder why they are stuck with civilian oversight committees in some of these urban departments.

I'm a concealed carry permit holder. I was taught that you don't shoot unless you're in a life threatening situation and there's no way to exit the scene. You can't shoot someone running away!

Before commenting, please review the USSC decision in TN v Garner & its applicability to a "violent fleeing felon". If the officer(s) who fired perceived this juvenile as being the person who had just attempted to assassinate them and posed an ongoing deadly threat to the public, the use of deadly force is justified to stop that threat. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tennessee_v._Garner

Re #4. There is a great deal of difference between the rights and responsibilities of a legally armed citizen and a sworn peace officer. LEOs have many more 'bad shootings' than legally armed citizens every year. Why is this? Because a police officer's job is to arrive on a scene, often where there is ongoing or recent violence and quickly (instantly in some cases) sort out the good guys from the bad guys. Occasionally, they get it wrong. As to a legally armed citizen....it's pretty clear when a guy pulls a gun or knife on you and threatens you who the bad guy is, far less chance of the kind of ambiguity that police officers often face. And an armed citizen fleeing the scene after 'shots fired' is good tactics, not so for a police officer who is required to move towards the sound of unknown gunfire, while armed citizens normally will head away from it.

If that is part of their police training, then they need to stop that part. If they are running away from you, you should not be shooting at them. PERIOD. Remember, those payments are also paid by taxpayers even if they have an insurance company paying their insurance costs will increase significantly. Wonder how quickly they would change if the payments came directly out of their budget the following year?

#12 Taking that training away from police is adding training to murderers #1: Run away. Cops spends their lives sitting in cars, gender sensitivity training, and courtrooms. They and are wearing heavy bullet proof vests and won't catch you - and you know they won't shoot you. I'd sooner live in a world where I am volunteering to forfeit my life if I'm stupid enough to run from the cop than a world where anyone could murder me and get away with it but cunningly... running away.
