In 2016, voters in California approved a $1.2 billion program to build housing for the homeless. This is a fine idea, and Californians should be applauded for their compassion and generosity. But six years later, only 1,200 units have been built out of the 10,300 that have been paid for. One project under development would cost $837,000 for each housing unit, according to a report published by Los Angeles city controller Ron Galperin. Another 14% of units exceeded $700,000 in cost.

They are CREATING homelessness, by subsidizing it, effectively encouraging it, making it easier, making it less likely that people will try hard to pull themselves out of this, more likely that they will settle in and live in subsidized, drug and alcohol fueled semi-human existence.....which these leftists seem to like and approve of.

And then the state will demand money from the feds to bail them out when their finances are all screwed up.

California bureaucrats are exponentially more corrupt and wasteful than your average government idiot. Amazing insanity.
And the people out there keep voting the crooks into office over and over.

A plane ticket back to South America is much cheaper. Housing is only a problem now because millions of illegals are taking the fixed number of lower cost rental units.

This is why the infrastructure in the US has never improved. The democrats shovel all the cash from government programs into front companies they and their friends profit from, but never actually build anything with the funds. They fix up or paint over old stuff but never replace with new. Same stuff different day!

Invariably there's a connected insider making a fortune on problems created by the government, as if by design, with the other part of the goal being to burn our wealth on a bonfire of self-righteousness.

I'll bet these geniuses bought a house for one homeless person which is why it cost over 800 grand for one person.

It's "compassion and generosity" in Progressive Speak. In reality it's simple enabling of an idle parasite class that is made up chiefly of drug addicts. Additionally, nice, comfortable facilities will quickly draw more homeless into the city, requiring more money to build more facilities, attracting more homeless - and so on.

The Garcetti City of Los Angeles has been nutso out of control for as long as Garcetti and the Dems have been running it. Mercifully we do not live there.

It may come as a jolt to #5 that the homeless are not necessarily illegals. Most of those who come from Central and South America are looking for work and they do find it. Work that others will not do (blacks, indigent whites. druggies, the mentally impaired). We don’t see Hispanics in those homeless encampments...

Wrong Answer. Homeless, there is a large field 5 miles from town, you have a Tent there, MOVE NOW!
PS. If you soil the ground you will be removed to a place where you are fenced in and have NO TENTS or anything else.

It's taking the LA goobermint 10 years to build 10,300 units - - maybe - - at a cost approaching $1 million per unit. I wonder if the Toll Brothers or Del Webb could stay in business at that pace - - and that cost?
